This episode we take a stab at melting silver jewelry into bars. We used some of Kathleen's old sterling silver jewelry and found a few pieces from thrift stores and a small antique shop.
PLEASE NOTE: WEAR GLOVES!!!!!

Yes, we realize we should have worn gloves in this video but had issues with the little tongs that were included in the kit. So going forward, please be sure to wear all the proper safety gear whenever melting anything.

You did a great job for your first time! I'm wondering where you bought the bar molds. The only ones I've bought or seen, hold well over an ounce. I'm looking for smaller molds. Thanks.

I'm sure there is plenty of silver in that junk still but you'd probably need acids to separate it. Which is a really fun science Sunday project if you do your research. Nitric acid would get it out

Pretty cool looks like you had some fun. I'm a starter, with home smelting I mean.

If you had another flame-thrower, you could hit the silver as it is about to leave the cauldron before it goes into the mold. It usually helps to keep the silver flowing more fluidly and not allow it to solidify before settling into the mold.

Glad to see a new video from you two. Nothing better than pouring molten metals. Good find, even sterling is getting hard to find these days. Nice salvage work. Five ounces troy is an amazing find. Be safe my friends. Use leather gloves, work boots(no flip flops), leather apron and melt outside. What size was that mold? Thanks for the video.😎⛏⛏🔥🔥

@WanderingBuffalos
@WanderingBuffalos 3 года назад
It eats the crucibles. I started to play with copper but the heat needed it was burning holes in the crucible.

Hi Brett, we bought ours from the vendor Miners Keepers based out of AZ. I don't think they have it online. Search for gpkcompany who are the actual makers of the kilns. They also have larger sizes as this is the smallest version.

You need a black light to shine on your little beads because they might be rubies sapphires or emeralds.
@crs7398

you should pre heat your crucibles by placing them on top of the foundry while you are warming up the foundry. also if you can fine a small piece of porcelain to place in the bottom of the foundry that doesnt block the flame but keeps the crucible out of the direct line of the burners the crucible will last longer
@crs7398
@crs7398 3 года назад
also you shouldnt use the concrete block to pour on. concrete absorbs water and if you spill molten metal on it the moisture could vaporize and pop the concrete sending molten metal flying. a granite floor tile would be better or sand

Think you guys should get an earth magnet. It will help you find if jewelry is silver or not. Silver is biomagnetic.

I have some silverware that says LS or maybe IS on it. Is that a purity sign?
@TrevorAllenPhotography
@TrevorAllenPhotography Год назад
IS stands for International Silver....which is a company that does Silver plate. I just went through 20lbs of silverware last night...you're looking to get rid of anything 'Rogers' or 'Community'. Other things to look for are the word 'Plate' in any reference (Queens Plate, Silver Plate, Triple Plate, etc) , A1, E.P.N.S, 'Nickel Silver' or EP. Things you want to see would be the words 'Sterling', '925', or actually finding silver hallmarks. In 20lbs of bulk Facebook purchases, I wound up with 10oz of sterling.

Aren't those crosses made of gold? They don't look like silver.
@montanatreasurehunter9600

I thought the same thing "meat loaf" lol. The silver your left with should be more pure than. 925 right? Thanks for the video.
@frantiseklaluch6605
@frantiseklaluch6605 10 месяцев назад
Well, 0.925 is not 925, I think... 🤔 One more scam I learned about... We have special hallmarks here in Europe... The idea of silver cleaning with rock tumbler is good, I will steal that... 😀 Magnetic polishers cost kidney... to make rock tumbler costs less... Thanks...
