The Pork Pie, a British institution, but where did the Pork Pie originate from? Was it Melton Mowbray? Well in today’s vlog, I take a trip to Dickinson & Morris, Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe in Melton Mowbray.
In cockney rhyming slang pork pies, porkie pies, or just porkies, means lies.
But rest assured it’s no word of a lie that Brits love pork pies!
There are pork pies and there are Melton Mowbray pork pies. Named after the market town in Leicestershire, Melton pies have been handmade in Melton Mowbray since the late 18th century. The uncured meat is chopped rather than minced and the crust is formed by hand to give an irregular shape.

I just had one, my first after 18 years living in London, that pie was sublime! And even better eating it was watching this video, very instructive and I had a laugh, thank you! I experienced cold as I had one half but with your mom's feedback I had to take the other half to taste the crunch of the pastry. My wrapping was red from the supermarket but I will go there and try them from the shop. Great video!

Did you know 'Ye Olde' - never has been pronounced 'Yee Oldie'...just plain and simple 'The Old' same as we say it today. In Old English, a letter called thorn (þ) represented the 'th sound' (as in that) in Modern English. In the Latin alphabet, the Y was the symbol that most closely resembled the character that represented thorn. So, thorn was dropped and Y took its place...but it was still 'th' never 'y' as in 'year'. Similarly, the 'e' on the end of olde and shoppe are redundant and not spoken...it's just 'old' and 'shop'. So, especially Americans, please...stop going around saying 'yee oldie porkey shopey', you sound ridiculous.

Great vlog . Your mum is a star. You are both right they are the best pork pies. I prefer them cold but everyone I know has them hot with mushy peas and mint sauce .

I'm not British but a big fan of pork pies. When I first bought one, nobody told me how to eat them so I reheated my pie in the oven and consumed with nice dollop of ketchup, the same as I do with sausage rolls, and I do it to this day. Sorry fellow Brits🙏🏻😉

Melton Mowbray pork pies are the absolute bees knees. I just wish they weren't so bloody unhealthy. As good as food gets. Also they are better heated and that's from a Lancashire man

Bought a pork pie here in Australia for the first time in years…… took it home and the misso had (without me knowing) heated it up for me!!😦 I’ve never been so disgusted at her in my life. 😂 Growing up in England they were always served cold.

Actually, the very best pork pies in the known universe came from the Belvedere Pie shop in Whitley Bay. Unfortunately, the little old dear who knew the recipe passed away, taking the recipe with her. Their pork pies after that just weren't as good, so eventually the Belvedere Pie shop (there were two of them) went out of business. Melton Pork pies are pretty good, but should you find yourself in the Yorkshire town of Pickering, you'll find exquisitely delicious warm pies from a little shop on the High Street.

@@TheMacMaster yeah it's the main day all the old people go out cause the cattle market is open so get loads of farmers coming in aswell. Yeah I dont mind it but its just Melton to me! I would say I think you would find the Victorian Christmas market in Melton very good to vlog, it is normally first Sunday in December it has loads of stalls of really nice food, loads of stuff going off, in the church a Christmas tree festival with well over 1000 trees it's just a really nice thing very busy but great!

@@TheMacMaster take her the Christmas market ahe will love it, it does get really busy have bus loads coming into the town, it has a really good atmosphere cause they have a stage with people signing stuff aswell but the tree festival is really something you want to Google it trees everywhere you look and the bison cob I have every year 👍 I'll keep my eye out for you great work keep it up!
