I was very excited to see you fix a recipe I grew up with in Sussex County, Delaware! We add a good piece of salt pork to the water, and we favor slippery dumplings instead of the biscuit kind, but the end product still looks similar (i.e. delicious). We always make them in the spring with fresh peas, and honest to goodness I never thought to try it with frozen! Peas and dumplings all year round now! 🥳
I just love learnin things keeps me sharp! This looks so easy n delicious thank you again! Im thinking this with ham dinner would add to my ‘shine!’🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️
My family is from the Danville, Va area. I am 68. I have great memories of my grandmother making peas and dumplings. My mom says it was a staple for her growing up in 30's thru 50's. It was always one of my favorites, and now one of my families favorites. Most people I know have not heard of it here in Alabama , but once they taste them they are hooked. Thanks for sharing. These old recipes should not be forgotten.
I have even heard of peas and dumplings since my grandmother died in the 1980's. I am so glad to get this recipe bc I can't wait to make them. Thx a million.
Mama used to make dumplins by rolling them out and pinching them off so they were thin and she called them slickems. The best I've ever had of course! Thanks MeMe.
I am so happy to see you posting this. I think I have asked you for this recipe. I am not a fan of frozen peas I like the canned peas. My aunt used to make them for me. She was 83 with crippling arthritis and her fingers were bent over. She use pinch off dumplings. But I always use biscuits. I like the buttermilk biscuits. But I sometimes use bisquick with buttermilk. This is my favorite dish ❤
So happy I found your channel! You are so sweet and a wonderful cook! You remind me of my Southern Grandmother, who passed many years ago. I have never seen this recipe since she made it years ago. Thank you!
@@memesrecipessc yes ma’am! I fixed yours w/ the dumplings like you did except I added chicken stock instead of water & I could have ate the whole pot! Thanks for sharing.
I think I'd like to try this using beef or chicken stock and add some diced onions with a little garlic and some black pepper. I absolutely love your program and all the wonderful recipes 🤗
Your video reminded me of when I was first married in '71 and we were stationed in Hawaii I called my dad , in Indiana, to find out how to make dumplings. HA if I only knew your secret.😂
Love love being in the kitchen with you. I microwave the peas, and don't put water in microwaveable container. Microwave 2 minutes. And, then make your dumplings, then add the peas.
Another amazing MeMe recipe! I made this tonight for dinner! So delicious! I used what I could find which was a bag of frozen mixed vegetables. And, I added black pepper.
I am also from Sussex County, Delaware. My husband calls this, "Peas and Puffies", when you use biscuit drop dumplings. Meme, you should try slick dumplings...Annie's frozen work if you can't make them from scratch. Shine on!
Thank you for this recipe!I’ve always made my peas with butter like you but I add a few small bite sized potatoes, when all is tender I add a little flour & water mixture to make a thickening. I’ve never heard of peas & dumplings before. Here in Kentucky it’s always peas, potatoes & thickening, so I’m gonna give your recipe a try, it looks delicious !!!!
I ordered two cookbooks. One for me and the other is my for my niece setting up her first home!! I live too far to teach her. Great job on book and recipes.
Hello Miss MeMe I just love watching your videos. I'm new so I have a lot to catch up on. There are some days that I just don't know where to start. But, I get inspired by your shows. I don't have, and never had, another woman to cook with. Here and there, once or twice-maybe. My mom died when I was little. I love watching what other women have going on in their kitchen. Everyone can have the same recipe, but each make it different. I think that comes from how we learned to cook and just how we are, so we each have something to learn from one another. Anyway this looks so good. Reminds me of something my mom made, but you know, I was 11 when she died and I did not like dumplings. Everyone would say that my mom made the best dumplings. Or we would grow potatoes in the garden, and peas of course, and put the little tiny potatoes aside and then when had enough, put them and peas in a white cream sauce and it was so good. I've tried to copy that, but it's not the same. I think because they were garden fresh. Like tomatoes-I live down in Florida now and back in Illinois everyone had tomatoes from their gardens and they were so good. I'd take a salt shaker out to garden and just eat them until I was a mess. Nothing like fresh tomatoes-but that has nothing to do with anything-just missing our garden. Thank you again.
Now that is interesting. I was craving chicken and dumplings, but I'm out of chicken and I don't want to go out to get anything because it is currently -10 degrees. I'm going to give this a try, maybe with some cubed ham in it. A plus for making biscuit dough is I always have a sack of flour in the house, but rarely keep biscuits. Funny story, if you like: My mom once had to get her fridge repaired because she had kept a tube of biscuits in the butter compartment of her refrigerator. On the very morning of the expiration date, she heard a bang. The biscuits had exploded and blown the door off of her butter compartment. I believe the the manufacturer of the biscuits agreed that while they had expired, they weren't supposed to explode, and ended up paying for a replacement compartment door, as well as some replacement biscuits.
I have never heard of this combination but plan to try it … and possibly add some chopped rotisserie chicken and let it be the main dish! I made your chewie bars this morning, very good!
I haven't ever heard of peas & dumplings ,but I'm for sure going to make ,wondering if i could use chicken broth instead of water ? Are would it alter to much
Merci !! Cela doit être délicieux ! But we don't have those biscuits in can here, so I can't try your recipe.... I'm sad cause thats looks delicious.. Sorry if I write with faults I'm just a French !.........
Meme, have you ever made red potatoes with dumplings and boiled eggs chopped up in it? Anne's frozen dumplings are wonderful. Hard to find, except at Publix.
Not many know what,China Berries are. At 73 , I definitely know they are. .my cousins and I always had China Berry fights. Got our tears spanked many times.
I don't know, I think I'll just have to take your word on this one. I love peas when they are just barely cooked, heated, but still snapping in your mouth. The dumplings just don't look as good to me as the chicken and dumplings dish. hmmm
Y'all, I like Walmart brand of almost everything but the sweet peas...... they are "hit and miss". Don't ever make the mistake and steam in the bag and suggested in back of bag. They are truly hard as china berries in the hot sun!!! I pick another brand if at all possible.
