Natalie's cold, calculated, heartless, cunning stare at Lenny from the car at 0:58 is one of the most chilling and poignant moments in the film. It's practically the essence of the film for me. That is one good scene.
Memento had a lot of amazing scenes, I loved the one when Leonard is talking on the phone and he finishes his tattoo... it says "never answer the phone"
Amazing scene!! Can't believe I waited so long to watch this movie. I've watched all other Nolan's movies and this one is special. All characters are unreliable.
I think what this scene shows is that our memory is based on what we think has happened and not what actually occurred. Because our memory is so unreliable, it can be taken advantage of.
Can you please elaborate the meaning. Please. Memento is my favourite movie and I really learned a lot from Leonard character. Though he has a problem but still he was able to succeed in his task through discipline. Please explain the meaning you have typed. A humble request Thank you🙂🙂🙂
Memento and Insomnia really makes me wish Nolan's other movies like Inception, Dunkirk, or Tenet have R-rated language too edit: this comment definitely aged like wine with Oppenheimer
Hate when there's Nolanites that've only seen The Dark Knight films and Inception. Nolan has soo much creative freedom with this and The Prestige. They're both nearly fantastic. SO excited for Interstellar next November.
I watched the movie twice and I still don't know who is she or who is her husband or if there is a real officer and who is teddy and did the dude actually kill the people who tried to kill his wife or no, its a really complicated movie
Omar Joseph so can you help me? Cuz I just finished this movie and I'm being nerdy about it. Who killed his wife? who is Dodd? Who is Natalie(if that's her real name although I think she made it up)? Is Sammy and Lennie the same person? He killed his own fuckin wife? LOL I'm getting crazy here xDD
+Paul SZ Leonard killed his wife with an insulin overdose, his memory of Sammy Jenkis doing that to his wife is a false memory, at the end of the film he remembers fleetingly that his wife did survive the attack
+Paul SZ Dodd is Jimmy Grantz Associate, Jimmy Grantz is killed by Leonard at the 'end' of the film because Teddy has set Leonard up to think that Jimmy is 'John G', Teddy's motive is to get drugs and cash from Jimmy, he then can't get Leonard to hand it over. I think that Dodd thinks that leonard is Jimmy and is trying to kill him due to being owed. Natalie has left a message to Jimmy in Jimmy's suit pocket (which Leonard takes after killing Jimmy) - the message says 'natalie'. Natalie manipulates Leonard to get rid of Dodd (owed by the dead Jimmy). Natalie seems to be the girlfriend of the dead Jimmy, she then helps Leonard identify who Teddy (another John G) is - that leads Leonard to kill Teddy, although he also set himself up to do this when Teddy upsets him by reminding him of killing his wife.
Well, he does (notice how he checks his pockets instinctively), but Teddy manipulated him into changing into someone else's clothes, someone who didn't have a pen on him. He didn't check his pockets before changing because the routine of him having his pens on him came after his injury, therefore he needs a reminder to have a pen on him, which he wouldn't have during the time in which he changed his clothes.
@@des_AT Right, rewatched the scene. Teddy did give Leonard some clothes, but he didn't change into them. Mb. He evidently lost his pen after writing down Natalie's name, which was a bit before she took the pens away.
People 'rooted' for the Joker because he stole the show in the film, being arguably the best acted, written, and most intriguing character in it. He had many valid points on society but his stance as a villain is pretty un-debatable; he has zero empathy, obtains joy from killing, and breathes for the conflict, death, and chaos that he unleashes. He may have his agenda but at the end of the day, the Joker wants the Bat alive to continue the fun; and that's what makes the difference.
Not really. All his films after this (The Prestige, The Batman Trilogy and Inception) were all amazingly written. What's with people calling anyone who makes it big a "cash cow"
Because his films became melodramatic overly expository pieces of holly crap, most notable Interstellar. Memento is a masterpiece and head and shoulders better than anything he has done since
Funniest thing about this movie is i always thought it was some weird horror film about a guy who loses his memory every day and has to take photo's to remember. Likely because I think i saw it on Film4 on my freeview as a kid but don't remember how much I watched of it and I don't think I actually understood what was actually going on with all the jump cuts. It wasn't until I finally watched it after seeing it on Netflix that I realised how completely wrong my memory of it was.
Yeah that's why I was confused. I didn't get why they did that and I didn't get the black and white was shown in order, while the Color'd was shown in reverse. I picked up on it towards the middle of the movie. Then it took me awhile to pick up they were trying to make you feel like Lenny, and others pointed that out to me lol. I got most of inception except for a few things. Still a complete mind fuck though lol. Nolan loves leaving people wondering.
I love Nolan's movies the following, memento, prestige, insomnia, and the Batman trilogy , except Inception that was just a mind fuck, it was too much for me.
This scene is flawed. Based on Lenny’s condition he should not even remember who Natelie is without flipping through his photos. It would be an anonymous house and person.
No even if he doesn't know someone he just goes along with it,, remember when he gets inside his car and Teddy is inside he tried to kill him, because he knows some things about himself, his clothes, cars or house, Teddy was in his car without him knowing so thats why he got angry and he didn't recognise teddy, but when Natalie enters he's in her house, Conditioning and repetion
I wish Chris Nolan revisits R rated crime thriller with his brother. sadly I do not see that happening again. he has just become a cash cow for Warner Bros. :(
***** There are huge differences displayed in memory retention times. In essence he should not be able to drive to a destination more than a few minutes distance without forgetting just what the hell he is doing in his vehicle, let alone be able to remember what his destination should be. When meeting the woman there are great differences in time-lapses for his interaction with her, such as remembering what his motives are and what predicaments she has placed him in. And that is just two examples. Even his photo-record and tattoo "reminders" are actually flawed because he should not actually understand what the "notes to self" signify after several minutes, let alone hours and days. It is however a well acted piece on the theme of identity and life-purpose.
***** He suffers from episodic memory deficiency. People with EMD can recall past events before a time the EMD set in. Some patients find relief by performing activities that are driven by the limbic system memory (playing musical instruments, singing etc. - it works for some stroke patients also). In real cases they could start a conversation with you provided it does not require them to memorize the dialoge beyond one or two minutes duration. After that time span they look at you and wonder what has been transpiring, and even ask you if you just came into the room. I know of no cases where patients are allowed to drive vehicles of any kind. Anyway, my point was, it is flawed in that his EMD has variable memory-time tracks and it is, to some extent, portrayed as something he can overcome with notes & symbols (photographs). Could some forms of EMD be as portrayed? Maybe. Am I nit-picking? Sure - maybe. I simply enjoyed it as a theme on identity and grappling with life-purpose.
+DataWaveTaGo he doesn't always remember his messages and photos, you see him puzzling over Jimmy's arm and he only knows not to trust teddy - he has also discarded parts of his journal to fool himself. Maybe the act of driving keeps the memory going in his mind, also he is able to learn by conditioning (was covered in film) You might noticed at the end, he 'forgets' what has happened with Jimmy Grantz - suddenly there is just a dead man - but he tells Teddy about the 250K Jimmy offered him to live - so he remembers 250K he never even saw, but forgot he killed a man.
I know he did, but that doesn't change the fact that she uses him here. It's not like she just out of the blue decided to be a bitch and he hit her back. That wasn't the plot. That's all I'm saying
This is a bit flawed, because he should be able to repeat something to himself every few seconds and keep it in mind indefinitely (even if he would forget it as soon as he stopped).
AlephNeil I'm guessing that's why he is desperately telling himself "FIND A PEN FIND A PEN", but is distracted when she gets out of the car and forgets it
Dodd is some how involved in the drug deal with Jimmy grants, after Jimmy grants gone missing , he would possibly go to Natalie. Natalie use Lenny to get rid off Dodd by a fake play. John g has nothing to do with Dodd, in fact .the movie doesn't give the hint that John g is actually a puzzle given by teddy to Lenny, just to use him for teddy's advantage.
to be honest I turned it off half way. i tend to do that with movies that are sometimes sluggish at the beginning, perhaps if I stuck to it I may have liked it. one day I'll re-watch and see if it was really worth it.
