A walk around one of London's 'magnificent seven' cemeteries taking in medics, political activists, circus performers, egyptologists, native Americans, a catacomb and the history of how the English bury their dead.
Extremely well done as always, Julian! The records of the cemetery do in fact reveal that my relative, Hannah (Peters) Courtoy and two of her daughters (being Mary and Elizabeth) are interred within the grand Egyptian-esque mausoleum located at Circle 3.
Just stumbled across your videos after once again falling down a RU-vid rabbit hole. Most enjoyable and informative. I love your style of presentation and obvious enthusiasm. Keep it up!
I enjoy cemetery tours and stories very much. Also your comment on an upcoming museum video is highly expected. Thank you again. This is top quality material!
What a wonderful presentation. A great change from some of the other poorly presented programmes out there. Consummately informative, precisely and clearly explained and one station which I will visit and revisit on a regular basis. Clearly and succinctly explained. Thank you.
I've really enjoyed watching your videos. Great info. Very well presented. Be great if you could do a video of kensal green cemetery, so much history there. Hope to see more videos from your channel in the near future.
Such a delightful video indeed! I have always been fascinated by the grand history of those magnificient victorian cemeteries, especially in London. When I see those time machines I can only feel a deep respect and admiration for the memory of those people and obviously for the beautiful symbolism of victorian funerary art and customs. I wish authorities had cared just a little about victorian mausoleums in my country but unfortunately, they don't care about culture at all. Thank you sir for this superb video which also helps me to improve my English as an English teacher. Greetings from El Salvador, Central America.
Brilliant, what can I say, TV quality, loved the narration, great filming with so few cuts, tremendous research and a joy to watch. Looking forward to watching everything else Julian has done and whatever comes with the future. Great find, hope you become a really successful youtuber, we need just this sort of content.
Than you so much for this very encouraging and generous feedback - it is appreciated. I have passed on what you say to my filmer too. I am trying my best to get the word around but so far it is slow going but TV or YouTubing is what I'm aiming for. Hope you enjoy my others - including taking a peek at 'Deception & Disguise - a tour of my living room' and 'The Repton Boxing Club', amongst others. All good wishes, Julian
Absolutely fascinating and interesting tour , I was born and brought up in Chelsea and walked past and through Brompton cemetery very frequently as a youngster, unfortunately at a young age the history of the place and it's inhabitants didn't interest me as much then as it does now.
Thank you and delighted you enjoyed this. Yes; Brompton's quite something. In case you've not already done so, go to Nunhead and West Norwood cemeteries, as well.
@@julianbarnett4564 thanks Julian, unfortunately my wife and i have now moved out of London and now live in a tiny village near bury st Edmunds so travel to London is much more difficult, but maybe a visit would be possible in the not too distant future.
My pleasure. Thank you. Normally, when covid isn't upon us, the catacombs are opened on selected days in the high summer months. Keep an eye on their website
very suggestive cemetery, in Italy there are ancient cemeteries but not as particular as in England, even the burials are particular with those tombstones placed in the ground that really give the sense of antiquity
There are some notable celebrity graves there Henry macgee (comedian and actor) and Brian Glover (actor and former wrestler)we searched all day but couldn't find them
What a wonderful and historic walk! On that lovely Egyptian style mausoleum, why wouldn’t you put your name on it? You spent a lot of money on this, why not at least put you Sir name on it? Being a doctor in the early 1800’s,was equal to a barber/butcher. They practiced such primitive medicine then. If you were really ill, the one place you didn’t want to be was in a hospital. It wasn’t until the end of the 19 th century, that they finally had anesthesia, and pain killers. They still didn’t have antibiotics though until right around WW2.
A fascinating tour of the cemetery. I have a question, i'm trying to find the grave of actor John Stuart (1898 -1979) who was a big silent movie actor and an uncle of a friend. I know he is in Brompton, but cant find his exact plot. Any help on this would be greatly received. thank you
Hello Richard. Thank you. I have no idea as to the answer to your question but the cemetery office should certainly know a they keep meticulous records of all interments. I hope that helps. Julian
I would be very interested to hear about the Egyptian hieroglyph interpretation, even if it doesn't make sense, it may have some scientific enlightenment
@@julianbarnett4564 the interpretation may not make sense to anyone in conventional means, but taken in the context that it was a time machine, teleport, or stargate, what doesnt make sense at first classically may make perfect sense in a different context.
But it's not a time machine or teleport. This is simply fanciful thinking. It's a fine stone structure designed and paid for by a clearly wealthy person fascinated by the ancients. Nothing more than that, though that in itself is terrific !
@@julianbarnett4564 probably not a time machine ~ but if I had a time machine I wanted to hide, a cemetery would be the perfect place. Ever thought about conducting a spiritbox session, and asking the ghosts what's inside?
@@tayeebhussain5014 How I would love that ! I have asked for years. One day, one hopes although the expense of restoring prior to opening, alongside obtaining legal permission are all issues that would need to be dealt with.
I'v watched several videos on line about cemeteries in the U.K. . Could someone please tell me why they aren't mowed and trimmed ? They seem to have been left for nature to consume . Why , they have such historical sites , beautiful art and statuary! . . 🤷 . 🪦 . 🌾. 😔
