The black and white scenes start at the beginning chronologically and progress forward in time. The color scenes start and the end chronologically and progress backward. They meet in the middle. If you're watching closely, you'll see the black and white turn to color during the scene with Jimmy.

I think I got that during the edit but definitely not during the watch!

This movie is so good. Nolan truly is one of the absolute best directors and story tellers making movies today, possibly ever.

First time I watched it, it made truly depressed for like three days afterwards. His life and fate are so tragic, I couldn't stop thinking about it. Definitely one of the best and most memorable movies imo.

That's something that lingered with me afterward too. I pondered it for a while after I turned off the camera.

This movie has had a permanent spot in my top 5 favorite movies of all time since I first saw it 20 years (!!!) ago. Absolute masterpiece.

This imho, is Nolan's best film. Even 20 years later my brother and I still talk about it with eachother, and how strong the human urge of denial is that many people will reject reality in order to give themselves purpose and a sense of accomplishment. Leonard is such a tragic character, and Guy Pierce was excellent as him.

@dlweiss 10 месяцев назад
One of the all-time greatest mind-fuck movies, and it manages to tell its story with only a few dingy city locations and a cast of like 7 characters. Still one of my top Nolan films for sure!

Also, to answer your question: Lenny remembers that he has his condition because he learned through repetition. Just like he mentioned in the Sammy story, it's a separate part of the brain, and can still make new memories over a long enough time period. And repetition is also how Lenny convinced himself that his wife died in the attack.
@Omn1Media
@Omn1Media 10 месяцев назад
See I thought that was just another lie he told himself because, if he'd been at that hotel for as long as he had, his muscle memory would have keyed him in to pull on the door rather than push since we see him in current bumping into it and they choose to focus on that detail. He wants to believe his case is different but its actually not.
@dlweiss
@dlweiss 10 месяцев назад
@@Omn1Media Ahh, that’s such a cool theory! The movie doesn’t really tell us exactly how long it takes for repetition to create new memories, but I always assumed it was more like several months, rather than just two weeks.
@Omn1Media
@Omn1Media 10 месяцев назад
@@dlweiss Right, I don't think you're wrong in that either. I was definitely wondering about that because I thought it was weird otherwise that Nolan would focus on that detail. Maybe a mislead or a clue. That's something I do love and hate about his films at the same time is the level of speculation/interpretation but the pain of the uncertainty. haha

Idk if anyone else has mentioned this yet. And I don’t know if it’s on the digital release at all. But, on the physical copies of Memento there’s an Easter egg where you can watch the movie chronologically. It starts at the end of the credits and goes through the entire movie backwards. It’s insane. Highly recommend doing it at least once.
@thething1710
@thething1710 10 месяцев назад
It was definitely on the limited edition one, my brother bought it when it came out and I remember that you had to "answer" in a specific order to be able to play it chronologically. Such a cool dvd set, made the movie all the more special to us.

This movie is aa perfect example for "why presentation of a story is so important" just a small trick to make audience see from end to start but it puts us in Lenny's shoes. We dont know what happened before. Brilliant story writing too. I think his brother wrote the story and it fits just right with the presentation.

Just a funny detail about localization/translation: here in Brazil the movie was was launched as "Amnesia" (forgetting previous memories), which, funilly enough, is kinda the opposite of the condition he actually had (being unable to make new ones). The epitome of the "you had one job" meme...

Memento is definitely a masterpiece… the way Nolan does all of these different tricks with the writing and cinematography and all of the small details is nothing short of brilliance. It’s not my favorite Nolan film, but it’s definitely the one I’d show to people if they wanted to be introduced to Nolan

Something most people don't notice on their first time watching is how Teddy is constantly trying to get Leonard's car away from him. He offers to drive, he says that the can take it and get the window fixed, etc. The reason is that Teddy is the only one that knows that there is $200,000 (?) in the trunk - the money Jimmy brought to what he thought was a drug deal. After Jimmy's death if he had just stayed away from Leonard he may have survived, but he wanted that money so he kept showing up around Leonard trying to get his car from him.

Memento was the movie that opened my mind to how films can play with time. There really isn't anyone making movies like how Christopher Nolan makes them.
@davyramirez1199
@davyramirez1199 10 месяцев назад
the dvd limited edition actually had a real post-it on the disc that said "play me". also the short story(written by Christopher Nolan's brother) the film is based on is so much more depressing, it's included in the limited edition dvd. the film and short story drew inspiration from Henry Molaison. a real life person who suffered a severe and unique brain injury who ended up giving science insight on how memory is processed in the brain
@Mark-xx3gh
@Mark-xx3gh 10 месяцев назад
Also, the limited edition has an Easter egg, there’s a screen with 4 illustrations of someone changing a tire. If you put them in backwards order, the movie will play in chronological order.

This is the first reaction video of yours I have watched, and I am impressed by how much you picked up on while watching it for the first time. For example, you picked up that he was in Jimmy's car and clothes, and I think somewhere in there you also remarked that Leonard might be lying to himself, which we find out at the end is true.

I love stories that are out of order because they mess with your mind the way that time travel stories do. But because everyone in this story is an unreliable narrator you're left not knowing the truth at the end. This movie was the trippiest trip my mind has ever taken. Lol
@ssotkow
@ssotkow 10 месяцев назад
Yes, our "misleading narrator" took viewers on a psychoanalytical journey from the perception of an antihero's fragmented mind... one who perceived himself as the good guy or victim. After the big reveal, you realize it wasn't necessary an "endless cycle of vengeance," but a heart-wrenching cycle of escapism from past guilt, which many of us partake in one form or another. The resurfacing flashback of Guy Pierce's diabetic wife was such a heartbreaking revelation. His sorrow and pain were palpable. Followed by his knee-jerk response to bury that memory... intrinsic defense mechanisms to cope with trauma is in us all, and at a deeper level, relatable.

I used to love this movie, but then in 2008 i was missprescribed a drug and suffered brain damage. I stopped making memories and i can tell you it's scary as f. to wake up and not know where you are in time, or to find yourself on a bus and not know where you're going, how you got there or why you're wearing the clothes you're in. I'm a lot better now (the brain has an amazing capacity to heal) but i can't watch this movie, or even your reaction, cos it's too triggering. One thing Nolan doesn't get right is that after a reset, waking or when you awake, you don't remember that you have a memory problem and have to start from scratch every time. Bloody good film though. Oh, and no matter how many times you've watched it, seeing the DVD Easter Egg version (with all the scenes in chronological order) is still a surprise. Highly recommend you try and find that edit.

The first time you watch this film you start off thinking Natalie is a good person that's helping Leonard. Then you realize she hates Leonard when she tricks him into hitting her so she can lie to him and use him. But think about this from Natalie's perspective. She has a boyfriend - Jimmy - and from what we know they have a good relationship. Jimmy goes off to do a drug deal with someone named Teddy, and then Leonard shows up at her bar driving Jimmy's car and wearing his clothes, claiming that he has a "condition" and has no idea what happened to Jimmy. She knows that Jimmy is dead, killed by either Teddy or Leonard (or both). So she uses Leonard to get him to kill Teddy. In her mind she's getting revenge for her boyfriend's death on the two people that killed him. She also used Leonard to get rid of Dodd, who was after her for money that Jimmy owed him (or something like that). Yes, she says some horrible things to Leonard, but this guy killed her boyfriend and stole his car and the literal clothes off his back. She has no reason to be nice to him.
