Still Christopher Nolan's best movie. The structure of the movie is still legendary in films. He's gone on to make more blockbuster big budget movies but this one has a realness and groundedness that makes it a masterpiece.

@@PhantomFilmAustralia I don't think he will. His catalog is still fairly great despite a dud here and there. The dude has some very high concept ideas but I think with the added budget he's forgotten a bit how to creat something with restraint and more personal. If he goes back to make something with a smaller budget or has someone to reign in his big ideas a bit he could put out another great one. I also think he needs his brother back writing with him to avoid the exposition dumps his past few movies have become.

@@ATC43 That's my point. Clever movies without the pretentiousness. Shyamalan fell in the same hole and Nolan is dancing on the rim. Nolan is far more intelligent a filmmaker. Still, he can't solely ride on the legacy of his past films.

It's a humorous moment, but I've always wondered if that may be a hint that he has killed many people. In other words, he has killed so many people (through Teddy's manipulation) that he is conditioned to assume that he is the "hunter" and not the "hunted" when he is in a chaotic situation like that and doesn't remember how he got there.

Awesome reaction! This film's a full-blown masterpiece of brain-melting storytelling. And the genius of telling the story backwards is that WE are forced to experience everything EXACTLY the way Leonard does: with no knowledge of how we got there, and only vague clues to guide us. Nolan and his brother are geniuses for writing a story where all the "twists" happen at the very beginning - so we don't see them until the very end. :)

This is the only way they could have told this story. The only way we can really get into the mindset of Lenny is to not remember the things he doesn't remember. Like him, we don't remember what just happened because we haven't experienced it yet. Brilliant

@Rhymester2113
@Rhymester2113 2 года назад
@@annaclarafenyo8185 Hi Clara. The attackers who injured Leonard, causing his condition, rapped his wife but didn't actually kill her. Leonard killed his wife via an insulin overdose. Leonard is Sammy Jenkins. Leonard created the story of Sammy, as a way of dealing with his guilt. There is a scene in the movie where Sammy is sitting in a chair in the nursing home. As somebody walks past him. He changes to Leonard for half a second. YOU HAVE TO LOOK CLOSELY. The director put this hint in the movie, to prove Leonard and Sammy are the same person. That's why this movie is so good. You need multiple viewing to work out the whole story. Trust me. It has been confirmed. Watch it again. 🙂👍
@annaclarafenyo8185
@annaclarafenyo8185 2 года назад
@@Rhymester2113 You don't know that, because Teddy is unreliable. This is POSSIBLE, but not REQUIRED. It is also possible that things happened the way Leonard remembers the rest of the movie, and Teddy is just talking bullcrap, as usual.
@annaclarafenyo8185
@annaclarafenyo8185 2 года назад
@@Rhymester2113 Also, in no case, whether Teddy is telling the truth or lying, is Sammy Jenkins the same person as Leonard Shelby. In Teddy's version, Sammy is a conman pretending to have the condition. This is also POSSIBLE, but you simply DON'T KNOW THE TRUTH, it is left ambiguous on purpose, as the filmmaker is pulling the rug from under you, by requiring you to lose your certainty about the 'distant past', and calling into questions even the pre-damage 'reliable' memories. Are they reliable? Maybe. Maybe not. We simply can't know.

How I see it: Teddy is a dirty cop who helped Lenny track down and kill the man who attacked him and his wife. Lenny's wife survived the attack, but couldn't handle the memory loss, and she overdosed on insulan. Leonard still needed a purpose and Teddy would then use Leonard to kill drug dealers, until Natalie flipped things around on Teddy.

I don't think Natalie intentionally flipped it around on Teddy. How would she know Teddy had anything to do with Jimmy's death? I don't think she ever saw him. She helped Leonard with the license because he helped her by dealing with Dodd, and I think she even felt bad for him, despite the fact that he killed Jimmy. [EDIT] By the way, I'm not saying that your comment implies intentionality on Natalie's part. Only clarifying because it can be interpreted as Natalie intentionally flipping it on Teddy, which I don't think happened.
@greg5r0
@greg5r0 2 года назад
@@xXMcNoobXx while I agree that it is never explicitly spelled out, and I admit I am connecting some dots on my own, I do think there is some general intent. She knows her BF was going to do a big deal with "some guy name Teddy" she knows he never comes back and was probably set up and killed. She also knows some "memory man" now has his clothes and car, but doesn't remember how he got them. She asks Lenny to not help Teddy, but help her, and when she gets in trouble with Dodd, she tells Lenny to kill Dodd or put him on to Teddy. And when she sees the driver's license, she recogizes the picture as some guy at the bar, where her BF did deals. While she may have had a moment of sympathy for Lenny, overall, Natalie was not a very nice person, and her last words to Lenny were "we are both survivors, with a pretty crazy grin," which I interpreted as her being pleased with how she got rid of Dodd, and revenge on Teddy.
@jp3813
@jp3813 2 года назад
A key aspect of this film is mental conditioning. Which was brought up when Sammy was being tested via electric shocks to see if he can avoid them through instinct instead of memory. It's implied that Leonard was stuck in a mental institution after his wife's insulin overdose until Teddy gave him a purpose of vengeance. Through this purpose, Lenny eventually conditioned his mind to instinctively be aware of his memory problem w/o having to be reminded of it (like his wife probably had to constantly do for him). In addition, he also conditioned his mind to pretend that Sammy wasn't a scammer and had a diabetic wife in order to maintain the assumption that his own wife could've only died from the assault. For w/o the drive of vengeance, he wouldn't be able to condition himself and function independently. The reverse chronology of the colored sequences convey Leonard's memory problem since the viewer also doesn't know what came before each scene. The film actually ends around the middle of the timeline since the black & white scenes are the earliest in the narrative except for all the flashbacks. Please watch Christopher Nolan's The Prestige (2006).

Natalie doesn't just pin it on Dodd, she specifically goads Leonard into hitting her, so she can blame it on Dodd, because she knows it will help her manipulate him. But what's TRULY messed up is how, in a moment of anger, Leonard resolves to convince himself that Teddy is John G, not only knowing it isn't true, but knowing he'll forget that it isn't true. It makes you wonder if he's done it before. Or if he'll do it again.

Exactly The underlying message is that bias can taint any fact-finding mission Leonard simply doesn’t trust Teddy, so he convinces himself that Teddy must be responsible in some way, despite knowing he isn’t Leonard is also so desperate that he is willing g to pin the blame on someone he knows isn’t responsible, just to feel like he accomplished something

This is a bit crude of an explanation, but here goes. The assault on his wife led to a cognitive (mnemonic) break and her death, at his hands, led to another one (associative). The first break affects his 15-minute memory. The psychic trauma of the memory of her death, however, managed to survive the 15-minute condition because she effectively committed suicide through him, with all of the guilt connected with that. This event leads to a dissociative condition and the creation of "Sammy" as a figure to associate with what he can remember but cannot connect with himself. It's not one cognitive trauma he has suffered, it's two, but both manifesting in the black-and-white of the film. The movie never quite comes out and says it, but it pretty strongly suggests that after Leonard killed his wife's assailant, she could not bear living with Leonard in his condition anymore. Teddy was likely the detective investigating his wife's assault prior to her suicide-by-Lenny. Hence, his familiarity with everything, but with Teddy deciding to "channel" Leonard's condition to his own purposes.

You simply should take the Sammy substory at face value, and deduce that Teddy isn't telling the truth in the final scene, BUT, it calls everything you think is solid into question. So that in the end, you have no idea about anything in the 'far past'. Only about the events you directly saw.

Whenever people ask me for movie recommendations I *always* suggest Memento first. I don't give away any details about the story but I explain the structure of the film because that's more important. The first scene is the end of the story and the second scene is the beginning of the story. The film zigzags back and forth between the monochromatic first half and the colored second half with the monochromatic scenes going forward and the colored scenes going backward until the end of the film, which is the middle of the story, where the last monochromatic scene becomes the first colored scene. That explanation alone is enough to get people intrigued, confused and excited about Memento. I love watching RU-vid reactions to Memento because they are how I imagine my friends and coworkers seeing it!

The point of this movie is that this character, in relation to us, is limited in time, so that his 'lifespan' is around 15-30 minutes. Everything he knows about the past is through notes and pictures. This is exactly like us, where our direct memories are limited to a few decades, and all our memories of the far-past are contained in notes and pictures. So you think the character is static, that he can't change, or improve, no character development is possible. Right? Except the story shows you EXPLICIT character development in two written lines "Don't believe his lies." And "Fact 6: License plate ...." those notes change Lenny from a cold-blooded tool murdering at the whim of Officer Gammel, to a hero, who will avenge Jimmy Grants murder.

Just in case you weren't sure: Teddy himself was actually the corrupt cop that was involved in drug deals with Jimmy - and he had an appointment with Jimmy at the same time Leonard killed Jimmy. This can only mean one thing: Teddy manipulated Leonard into killing Jimmy, not because he wanted to help Leonard but to get rid of Jimmy and take his cash.

The thing about this movie that really blew my mind when I first saw it is that obviously they chose the structure they did for it on purpose so you know as little as he does for most of the movie, which is masterful... but when the DVD was first released (at least, the first version that I got it, before I loaned it to someone and they never give it back) had a mechanism by which you could play the movie in the opposite direction, so you could see it in order once you had seen it in the correct way like this, which was awesome to do afterward to really get a good coherent view of things. one this guy never has of his own life, or in general people I'd imagine you have this affliction. It also had a little documentary at the end about the guy whose story was the inspiration for the character. Fascinating stuff.

Stellar reaction! It’s definitely my favorite of Nolan’s films, and a great example of how to balance a more cerebral theme with entertaining, well-placed plot. The short story his brother wrote is also good. If you’re looking for something I’d argue is even better/more philosophical, check out It’s Such A Beautiful Day by Don Hertzfeldt!! I literally don’t even want to type a sentence about it as it’s TRULY that good 🤯 If y’all ever end up making a video on that, it’ll absolutely make my week lmao

It was oddly disturbing for me when he knows he killed the guy he was after but realized his life would be unbearably meaningless if he knew that. Purposefully giving himself false information was somehow, rather horrible.

Agreed. Which is why even though he's a sympathetic character, he should be institutionalized. It's very sad how some people end up institutionalized through no fault of their own, just because mentally they aren't capable of productive or independent life. For a person like Leonard, his life is pretty much over but he has a possible 50 years left to live out his days. It's really sad.

Curtis (Kurtis?) is such a hottie. Does he have an IG? Anyways, this movie still holds up really well. And I still think it’s Nolan’s best. 2001 was just such a great year for movies (Mulholland Drive, Ghost World, Gosford Park, Memento, In The Mood For Love, The Royal Tenenbaums, Black Hawk Down, Donnie Darko, etc.). While it contains what I still think is the best movie of this millennium (Mulholland Drive). Might be the last truly packed year for great, inspired, diverse cinema.

25:04 Sammy Jankis turns into Leonard for a couple frames after the doctor or nurse walks by. This shows that the story he told about Sammy was mostly fake and everything Teddy told him at the end was true. Yes, Leonard's wife was diabetic (hence him getting flashes of memories of giving her an injection). Was Teddy a good guy? No, he was a crooked cop using a disabled man to steal money from drug dealers. He was, however, Leonard's friend. Leonard allowed himself to kill Teddy because he was angry at being manipulated, except, in doing so, he allowed himself to be manipulated by Natalie who wanted to get back at both of them for killing her boyfriend (and Dodd for getting her boyfriend into that situation). This movie is well worth watching a few times.

The main thing is he realized Teddy was using him so he decided to kill two birds with one stone. He'll take a picture of Teddy and assume he finally got his guy... and now he won't be manipulated by Teddy for more killing. The other point is he talks about facts being reliable, but now we see that even with all his facts... things aren't 100% reliable.

My takeaway from this movie was that with his condition he can live any reality, or do anything, but because he's hell bent on revenge he's trapped in reliving the same day over and over again, and is able to be manipulated.

For anyone confused, Leonard is NOT Sammy Jenkis. Teddy was just trying to manipulate him into listening. Leonard states multiple times that he remembers everything before his accident, including the insulin story. If he was Sammy Jenkis he wouldn't remember any insulin story ever happening because it would have been after the injury. He'd have no way of telling the story later cause he wouldn't know it even happend. This is why Teddy fails to manipulate him. Leonard knows his wife and remembers her death. HE IS NOT SAMMY JENKIS!

Mémento is mind trip masterpiece! There is a Blu-ray edition which offers the option to watch a re-edited version of the movie in the chronological order, so you watch the whole black and white hotel room stuff, watch Lenny go kill Jimmy and then all the events of meeting Nat and Dodd all the way up to killing Gamble at the end... And yet: It is still a mind trip watching that version too!
