Yes, I like this. But, the one thing that bothered me about the story was WHY did she love him, why did he love her? There was nothing between them, no connection, no chemistry. I didn’t feel bad for her when she lost him, because the story didn’t really show anything between them.

Preposterous no. I have the book, I started it, but never really got far. Do you think it’s better than the film? To be honest, I didn’t care for the main character in the movie. Her voice annoyed me. And I found the whole geisha philosophy to be very similar to that of a typical sexual performer, or prostitute. It was good that the story didn’t really glamorize it, it showed the sad, lonely side, and that made sense to me.

During film making, director might come with more creative ways to tell the story using all available cinematic resources.

In the book she almost throw it away , but eventually didnt. She kept it to remind of someone who left her forever. ( her parents, satsu, chairman, even though chairman is very much alive) So she might as well throw it away

I think the author was touching on how female professional jealousy leads to sabotage whether you’re a “good person” or not. Hatsumomo was a raving bitch (but in all fairness she was probably a “made” monster rather than a born one) and didn’t hesitate to exploit or hurt others because she was basically miserable in her career. She truly wanted to be some farmer’s wife and that option and even the small comfort of a lover were denied her. Sayuri was a better person with better motives and she didn’t intentionally set out to alienate Pumpkin, but her success and favor with “Mother” led to Pumpkin’s envy and resentment and ultimately betrayal. Sayuri (and the audience) expect better outcomes because they treat others better. It doesn’t happen. When you better yourself, not everyone wishes you well. Even if they should.

japanese people are very "patriotic" and for them it was outhrageous that all the female actress were chinese. Yes for us can be a silly attitude but for them is iportant.

all the actress were chinese and they were chosen because they are very famous among western pubblic, much more than an japanese actress. However japanese people didn`t appreciate this fact because they are very patriotic and the figure of gheisha is important for them. I really think that if you are a good actor you can play every kind of role but maby its not for everybody

I also wonder about that theory. I have noticed in my life that many women might feel envy towards far more attractive women than them. So I suspect Pumpkin deep down envied her that she was far more attractive and talented.

They didn't say it wasn't beautiful, just that it could have been much better. I love this movie, but some parts just make me facepalm.

HDDynamicFilms He wasn't saying it wasn't beautiful. He just said it lack authenticity. Which it did. It was also plagued with exaggerations. So much so the it disgraced the geisha it was based off of and they couldn't find one Japanese actor to participate in this production. This movie is beautiful but it is, at the same time, a disgrace to their culture, especially when most Americans take all of these exaggerations as the literal everyday life of a geisha.

Vassia Nikoli I agree but then I think both are master pieces but you just can't imagine the same charecters when you read the book it's such a strange feeling how every persone can imagine a different scene when reading and yet we all have seen the same movie ...! genius writer and brilliant director ..!
