When I was in junior high school, we made a trip to my grandparents over the weekend for apple season. I picked apples with my grandpa, my dad and my brother, we then pressed them into apple juice. It was a long day. Now, grandma had her own apple project going on. Dehydrating apple on the well house roof. It was a multi day process and she had been doing it for weeks. She would wrap cheese cloth over the cookie sheet so that the thinly sliced apples were suspended. She would then take the cookie sheets and place them on the well house roof. The process took several days. The apple chips were so good and crispy. For a week in my backpack at school, I had a zip lock bag, filled with apple chips to snack on.
Well, my new toaster oven has a dehydrate function. So I decided to test it out and make apple chips. On the first try, I sliced the apple too thinly on the mandolin and they disintegrated in the toaster oven. On the second try, I sliced them on the next setting on the mandolin and really wish there was a setting between the too. They took more than the four hours, but turned out good enough. I have to remember it took days for grandma to make apple chips.
Enjoy,
Michael

Slice 1 apple thinly and toss in 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice. Place on the dehydration rack and set the temperature to 130° and time for 4 hours. My apple needed an extra hour. Store in a sealed container or zip lock bag.
