I've never seen a movie so deeply sad but narrated in such a funny and surreal way. Also, in this movie there's absolutely no clear boundary between good and evil. Nothing is black or white. All of this wrapped in the heavy-handed Nakashima trademark style. Very very good watch. Those who don't like a gem and call this "an ugly film"... well, they better stick with Transformers or something else so simple their brains are capable of understanding.
@@beingathiest1790 liza the fox fairy (2015) i think its bulgarian film but its amazing. ( based on legend of japanese foxes) Animation movie Colorful (2010) about death makes you think. japanese If you want to see the most fucked up film in my humble opinion The world of kanako (2014) japanese Kiss me kill me (2009) nulikely love story depressed woman and hitman . korean Swing Girls (2004) musical movie japanese about girls creating a music band its highly entertaining and most similar to this movie in spirit except less sad. Tokyo Godfathers (2003 )is heart wrenching animation about relationships between parents and kids . Main characters 3 hobos stars of the show. Well i mean theres more but if you know these your experience is already richer :DDD
Japan is 10 years ahead of the rest of the world. When this film is copied by an english language director 10 years from now, it will be hailed as "AMAZING" "ORIGINAL" and "INNOVATIVE"
this is a movie that you will probably only watch once. its definitely an artsy film so please understand. what made this movie good was the emotions behind it. I definitely felt the pain Matsuko went through. If ur curious watch it. kind of a spoiler but if you want a happy ending this isn't the movie for you
I've watched it several times already... Yes it's sad but it's also very good and never fails to entertain. Dare I say it... Japanese equivalent to La La Land?
I agreed with your comment until you compared it to La La Land. La La Land is good on its own but Memories of Matsuko is also superb on its own league. Watching this film is like riding an emotional roller coaster.
I cant relate to this comment. This movie is now my favourite and I am gonna watch it on repeat till I wither. Its a masterpiece and I am sad is so underratted
I wouldn’t say it’s an easy watch in the slightest. Would genuinely put it up there with other films that are very tough to watch 💖🌸 but the director was very clever how he made this woman’s tough life into a musical
What exactly do you mean hard to watch ? I found it very easy to watch despite the length I find superhero movies difficult to watch I find them boring and far too long. And I used to read superhero comics when I was young.
This movie has made me cry so much...and laugh too!one of the best movies I've ever watched...I definitely recommend it...especially when you are feeling crap about your life this will make you feel better :)
This movie is about the balance between codependence and narcissism. It is suppose to show how codependents aren't in control of their own lives, instead they try to live for others without knowing the reason why. Narcissists have no empathy and take advantage of codependents and abuse them. An unseen mental illness early in life can spin out of control and lead to something worse.
Conmovedora historia sobre la trágica vida de un a mujer amorosa y desolada. Después de asimilar el raro, para un occidental, humor japónes, se aprecia la hermosa historia de fondo.
Wathed it tonight. DVD wise I honestly think you should have gone for a widescreen format instead of the letterbox thing with forced subtitles. Also some of the songs weren's subtitled which I would lhave liked to have seen subtitled. Movie-wise though... Seriously fantastic. Amazing stuff. Insanely funny but also very sade and also very beautiful... great film. One of the best I've seen this year...
@jumbodavejimbo The song is' Bend and Stretch' a childrens song from an old American children's programme called Romper Room. This is the Japanese version I presume from the Japanese version of Romper Room. UK & Australia also have or had version of the show Romper Room.
@@ash-dg7br Sorry. After watching this trailer again, I can honestly say that I won't be watching it. I've grown to dislike musicals even more now than back then.
Finally finished it. I regret buying it. And this movie has no cinematography. It's all shot on high end video cameras and they over saturated the colors. So besides having a horrible story of a woman that is prone for falling for dangerous men because it's still a prominent component to depict a single woman as weak because she doesn't have a man in her life (no. Really that's the story) the movie is an eye - sore. This movie looks cute in small bits. And people will gravitate to this movie because of the look. But that look sheds away in minutes. It's a really ugly film. I don't understand why people are recommending this
+Harold Rozo +Harold Rozo What? like a worker bee? Her sacrifice could have been directed to her sick sister. Instead she latched on to the worse of society. Its funny, too, because she was a teacher. Now i personally did not like the story. But this kind of thing does happen. I had an aunt that worked in womens shelters. And the women that came in would go back to their abusive husbands. My aunt taught me the meaning of the story "The frog and the scorpion." Sometimes in life a person needs to accept the nature of things. Some people wont change. They will still be toxic despite you helping them. Her brother knew this. And broke her off from her own family. Like i said, this kind of thing happens. But as a movie, its not worth sitting through. The movie goes on too long and its hideous to watch. I got to see another japanese movie that was long as hell and was shot in video. "Love exposure." Somehow that movie is virtually identical to this. But Love exposure is more enjoyable than this
