I think that it's telling that he just wanted to be "uncle Sy". He didn't want to displace will as the central male figure until after he discovered the affair. Even then it was still as "uncle Sy" not as the new father or husband. He just wanted to be a part of a group of people who would love and embrace him. That really shows how low his sense of self worth was.

Except there are hundreds of millions of Sy's around the world. Single, alone men. And no one cares about them because they're the faceless masses. Women have the opportunity from 12 onward to have children. All they need to do is hook up with a classmate or as an adult with a random man. Men don't have that. They can't create their own children, nor can they entice a woman to be with them just by opening their legs. Ask yourself why the terrorists from middle east are always young, single, lonely men who are enticed by the believe of getting virgins in the afterlife. Per 100,000, 36,000 males will commit suicide this year. Guess what? Its centered around 45, and while 75 and over, and 45-64 are pretty damn high, The next winning columns are 15-24 and 25-44, at a rate of 22-27. Right around that time when starting a family. Women's suicide rates is higest in 25-44 and 45-64, right around the time she is becoming less able to start a family. To reiterate: Males have 4-5x the suicide rate with a relatively even spread among all ages, but it jumps up massively after age 14, from 3.3 per 100,000 to 23 per 100,000. For those males who survive the death impulse due to no girlfiend, a life of loneliness continues. Go to any of your local dive bars. You'll find Sy's there. Look into their faces. Look at all the homeless men. Women can land on their backs and find a home. Men can't. Men are disposable, and the feigning of compassion and caring for single lonely men has to be the most comical thing, because we see how men are treated when they get upset about it on social media. The name calling, the anger and resentment, from both men and women pour out. "Why are you so entitled? Sure, we have this for ourselves, but its overrated, and anger or sadness over it is stupid, because you don't deserve it just because you want it".

Yes. Interestiongly I would say Sy is an anti-social/avoidant. Perhaps OCPD as well given his inane perfectionism towards film development in an industry based around a disposble market. A little of Cluster B a little Cluster C. Not just his self worth but the entirety of his ego has been restructured by a society he does not fit into. Sy just wanted to be aknowledge, understood and cared for. Shame that he could only ever have that is his fantisies. Which together with his transgressions against a known adulterer makes him a tremendously symoathetic villian.

I'd say it's more nuanced by that, more of a case by case thing. I mean somebody's mind could be completely destroyed to the point that they're psychotic and lash out violently, or somebody's character could be shaped to a lesser degree that still allows them full control. In either case, it's more explaining than excusing in this film's case - but admittedly, we're not good at handling both and most will think any explanation is meant as an excuse.

It seems Robin tapped into the darkest side of himself to play that role. He stated he felt lonely, depressed, and sad- he hid it with heroin abuse. If anybody ever had a problem with drug addiction, knows it only gets darker.. you can’t fix depression, or loneliness with drugs; eventually you snap, and end up doing something you’d never do while sober minded. @@thatunicornhastheaudacity as a now recovered sufferer from PTSD and BPD, I tend to agree more with the original statement. That's basically exactly what the "cycle of abuse/violence" concept is all about. Personally, all of the most destructive, hateful, and/or abusive people I've met were often victims of similar circumstances previously. That concept doesn't really apply the same way to those of us who overcome such challenges. It's the people who are still stuck trying to process or deny the trauma and pain that are the most likely to hurt others (I sure did until I finally got my shit sorted out).

sadly, it seems many comedians are born of broken people. I think that's why they're able to transition into drama fairly easily. Jim Carrey has mentioned that nowadays he doesn't feel he has to put on an act anymore when he's in public. He, like Robin, also used to try to be overly funny all the time, in interviews and whatnot, to the point it was kind of obnoxious. Fortunately, it seems Jim's been able to process his torment and has come to understand himself. Not an easy thing to do, and it's sad that Robin couldn't find the same contentment

@@blackleague212 Unfortunately at the time One Hour Photo was released, there was still a huge divide between television and cinema. Actors and production were segregated at the time, and big names such as Robin Williams and Connie Nielsen would have never made the "fall" to the small screen, as television was considered the inferior of the two, and where Hollywood actors went when Hollywood no longer considered them a bankable drawcard. The only notable exception at the time was James Gandolfini with _The Sopranos,_ yet that production was slated as an ensuing series. The slow burn of the film was paced quite well for a relatively short 1 hour 36 minute run time, so I suspect that audiences found it longer due to the performances and subject matter making people uncomfortable.

It’s painful to think about all of those who are silent, either from protecting themselves to keep themselves safe or out of a disassociation from immense pain no one could ever dream of having. We as a society just now have only just started finding out the true impact of childhood abuse and what the true toll it takes on the mind and body of the person. Complex PTSD can also have a undeniably drastic effect on other personality traits, disorders, or now we know even developmental disabilities. I just can't see Sy as evil, or even as a villain/ bad guy. He's a victim of horrendous tragedy and times in which mental health care was hardly as acceptable or available. He was hurt, bitter, angry, empty, and trying so hard to keep it together. He snapped when triggered by a stressor and rather than offer help, the institution that he saw his whole identity in, whose members he seemed to respect to some degree and cared about deeply, shunned him. For the second time in his life when he felt like he was suffering, no one cared, no one helped, and instead he felt unjustly persecuted. So, he slipped further and took actions that could justifiably be defended with an insanity plea, so at least rather than further traumatize him, there can be a hope for some care to be made available to him. I think that with treatment, he would not have offended, certainly would not re-offend, and would not be of any risk to the public.

Kindness will go a long way people. You never whose day might brighten simply because you decided to help pick up belongings they dropped.

I was watching One Hour Photo the day I heard about Robin's suicide. My favorite Comedian, actor & celebrity... My childhood took a significant amount of damage that day.

I remember one of my favorite animes Neon Genesis Evangelion being referenced in this movie, and actually I think Gendo Ikari would be an interesting character to analyze someday. I've always been so used to Robin Williams' comedy yet his dramatic roles are always incredible, from his still somewhat quirky ones like Mr. Keating in Dead Poet's Society, to roles like this or his character in Insomnia. We truly lost a legend too soon :(

I remember watching this movie as a child and being very disturbed by it especially as his stalking behaviors progressed and escalated. It’s a great movie as in brilliantly written and produced but as a watch it is so difficult. Rest in peace to Robin Williams won’t be another like him

Robin Williams’ turn in One Hour Photo, Insomnia and Death to Smoochy seems to show that the depression he struggled with his entire life was starting to overwhelm him. The process took years in the making and was not overnight. RIP to him all the same. What a loss

So happy to see this character on here. A truly underrated and underappreciated performance. Robin was a wonderful person and we all miss him dearly.
