On a serious note *ba dum tss* I think the main reason is to be able to play chords in an open position Notice that the G, B and E string strum together form an e minor chord, technically the 1st inversion of that chord but that's beside the point...
I love how unprofessional and awkward this style of video is. Makes it actually interesting and not boring to listen and fall asleep too. Thank you I’ve now found the right teacher.
I'm a total beginner but was encouraged to begin working on memorizing the fret board. I tackle one string at a time. I go up and down the entire string, playing ever note, and say out loud the name of the note. And I do this about ten times every time I practice. You wouldn't believe how quickly you can learn what's seemed impossible when you just start chipping away at it!
@@donniedarko464 I havne't memorized the entire freboard, but I have the first two strings (and subsequently the high-E string as well) down pretty darn good! Also, if you know the trick that adjacent to every B, are the notes E A D. So, you can use the word "BEAD" to help you remember where you're at. It helps a lot. I also only practice this for about five minutes during any practice session. After that amount of time, I move on to other things. Learning science says it's better to parctice things in short bursts, with lots of repetition over a longer periods of time.
I picked up guitar at 21 and I thought i would be a rockstar by 26. Still late by industry standard but yeah i wished. Lol But here i am 33 and just making acoustic covers. But tbh its more than playing on stage, its all about uplifting yourself and when no ones there for you, you know your six strings wont disappoint. Keep playing guys. You are one song away from a good day !
@@audreyb4185 I've had multiple low E strings snap on me. After 3 times, I realized the bridge had metal burrs in it, which were separating the outer coiling of the string from the inside :/
I play guitar for 10 Years now and let me tell you: Ive seen way to many videos where the Creator stumbles on about "the spider" for 10mins. This practice routine can be taught in 1min, for reference. But this video is spot on. Helpful, condensed information delivered in a fun way. Well done, man!
NO it not spot on, not even close he said count up or down 5 from B. That includes B, but on the rest of the board you have to count up to six then could back to five. Without knowing the fret board u would be clueless where B is.
Been playing for 11 years and this video lost me when it came to the counting 5 thing. I have general comprehension of where notes are on the fret board and I have a practical level of knowledge when it comes to music theory . However when I’m actively playing the instrument, I generally don’t know what particular notes I’m hitting at a given time. It’s mostly just shapes/patterns combined with fret numbers for me.
@@Mattm182 that's a big same for me. Been playing for 11 years now and I hard agree that mostly is just shapes/patterns combined with fret numbers lmao. But I do wanna learn the whole fret so I can play sicker stuff so I'm gonna give this a try!
This video single handedly clarified Guitars for me. My father gifted me a guitar when i was like 7 or 8. Now i am 28, and i have picked up my guitar, Videos like this are a gem.
I grew up playing piano and didn’t start learning guitar until a few months ago. I learned it by thinking of it as a piano (just arranged a lil differently lol), and the way that you related this video to a keyboard will seriously help me tremendously in the near future - u just sped up my learning by a lot, ty
You guys TOTALLY ROCK!!!! I've been playing for only 2 years, but I've made incredible gains everywhere (except in memorizing, or "learning" the fretboard"). I just got MORE out of your 3 minute video than I have gotten out of HOURS of watching other "Memorize the Fretboard Videos" on RU-vid - and that includes my own "Self-Study" where I honestly have kept a printout of the Natural Notes of all 6 stings in front of my video screen for 2 years (while secretly hoping that I would learn something from osmosis - or "videosis"). Thanks again for you terrific (and very honest) video. I am, and will be, forever grateful!!! 🤟🎸
that "BeCause, Everything's Fucked" thing has honestly changed my life I could never remember where the notes that don't get a sharp were but now I do! tyvm sick ass video
I basically already know all the notes but i still watched this anyways, and man this is the best ive ever seen anyone teach it lol, you basically just simplified music theory to the point where a 5 year old can learn it haha
Hey boss just wanted to tell you what a great job you did, I've to come to this video every day to help me practice. I obviously didn't memorize it in three minutes but this is by far the best explanation I've come across yet. I have a lot memorized already just by locating patterns and combining other facts.
I started playing 50 years back. Then life got in the way, work, kids, more work!. I never could work out in that 50 years what you've just taught me in a clip that takes up just a few minutes. Thank you.
I've been playing guitar and teaching myself for years and I already knew the notes on the fret but I had to really spend time thinking which note is which. Your advice of practicing every note in the fred is pure gold. Thanks
From a guy who makes 40-minute technical videos on guitar, this video is a masterpiece. Extremely well done. I really mean it. 🤙 I've literally showed students this video. Multiple times.
@@ІгорГригоренко-т3ж He says flat and shows the flag of Saskatchewan (one of the Canadian provinces) and Saskatchewan is so flat you can watch a dog run away for days. It's a stereotype based on the province's geography (flat lands).
I'm about to start with playing guitar and this, my man, was stellar. I needed to give my dad reasons why i wanna play and some basic info, this is gonna help. I appreciate it so much man
Holy crap, when people ask “what’s your learning style” I just need to point them to this video. Short, visual, memorizable, and has steps. Entertaining too! Thanks!
That is actually much more useful than I have expected. Has been playing guitar for years, learning and improving (not mastering tho) different techniques but never tried to dive into a music theory. Seems it's about time to try to not learn particular songs or melodies but to understand what I am doing in general and what nore I am picking here and there. Thank you!
I gotta tell ya, this dude just simplified my understanding of the fret board. I can’t express how refreshing your video tutorial was. You made it humorous, friendly, less intimidating, and impressive in your explanation. Well done virtual ninja 👊🏾.
That's actually a pretty good class on music theory in general. I'm 7 months in my music study and decided to look my old guitar and see if I can translate what I'm learning. This video helped me a bit with this. Thanks!!
In regards to the guitar's tuning, I believe the reason for the B-string being tuned differently than the others (tuned to the 4th fret of the adjacent lower string instead of 5th fret like all other guitar strings) is so that you end up with a 24 note span between the lowest string and highest instead of 25 notes and therefore an even two octaves (low E string and high E string). This allows chords to be played across all 6 strings. And as far as why the 4 fret jump didn't happen between the highest two strings, since most chord types contain a perfect 5th from the root note (chords types such as major, minor, 7th chords, sus, power chord, etc), it makes sense to preserve the root/5th relationship of the E and B strings so that they can always be played at the same fret, allowing for barre chords.
Thank you so much I am teaching myself the guitar and this is automatically in my top things to learn before worrying about playing any songs at all. I am starting out figure style and a lot of people said I should start with a pick. My intentions is to play classical so I did not see the point in starting with a pick. This video made it extremely easy to learn the fretboard as I can read music already I use to play instruments such as the alto saxophone. Anyway thanks again.
Hands down, the best on point explanation with the best animation. And yes, my understanding of music is like that mountain of puzzle pieces. Thank you so much for this vid!
Honestly thank you so much for this video! I’ve been playing guitar for 15 years and have never memorized the fretboard. Recently I’ve been trying to make my own music and I’m tired of just playing the same basic chords I know. I want to learn how to get what’s in my mind on the guitar. This video was packed with super helpful information and practices all in just 4 mins!
I’m a pianist and what he’s saying is amazing based on chord theory. Even though it was fast, watch like 5 seconds a day and practice and you’ll make great progress
What? Maybe the most simple theory ever, & nobody is going to memorize the fretboard from this. Playing piano will help you memorize the fretboard tho, that's how I did it, but this is actually the best way... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PJddQ6Q0UDo.html
I was not convinced by the video, but I'm convinced by your comment. I've been playing for many years, I never needed to memorize fretboard. I kinda know which note is where from intuition. And I can play anything from ear. But I see the application. It can be useful for making chords, or applying music theory.
I've been at it learning guitar seriously for about 3 years now and it doesn't come naturally to me either. I have to constantly drill everything I've learned into my brain with repetition. The Fret markers help a lot when it comes to quick note recognition. I at this point do have at least half the strings down pretty well.
I subbed to u man this is awesome I have severe adhd so I get very distracted watching guitar videos been playing for many years but skipped a lot of the basics and fail to play by ear but ur videos are super entertaining and short so I can watch them over and over thanks man
Several months ago I watched this video, and got nothing spoken there, but, today, I came across to this video again, and surprise, I understood everything! I guess, I've made a small progress)
Ive grown up with a guitarist for a father, im 30 and still struggle to understand why everything the way it is (sh*t teacher lol ) I've been needing this breakdown for way too long. You've made it so simple to understand in minuets! Thank you 🙏
As a 23 year old who started playing guitar at 12 (self-taught), then stopped at 14 for about 7 years until i picked it up again, i've been at a plateau between novice and intermediate for so long. Doesn't help that i strictly play punk/hardcore and alternative rock either. I feel like memorizing this and practicing it would help me break through enough, at least in terms of understanding. Thank you for this brilliant simplified explanation! I needed this 2 years ago so i'm so glad it's here now
Dude, this is the first time I’m running across your channel with this video. I hit play out of curiosity. Freaking HILARIOUS man. Seriously, way too cool.
