Makes sense, I think there is a lot of context missing here before we get into the detail. It feel a little like explaining how electrons spin without explaining what a molecule is. I'm still not sure of the HOW or the WHY after watching this. I was lost when the highlighter came out, as in, what's the significance of this. Maybe I need to watch more of this series?
I learned how to play as a kid, by ear. Then learned tabs later. Then started learning sheet music and such way later. My mother was a music teacher, and tried to teach me, but i just got confused. Something I've learned over the years now is, when you listen to great players like Eddie, Jimi, even SRV. The very seldom play a song the exact same way each time. I have several different recordings of Little Wing. Some by Jimi and some by SRV. They each played it differently from each other and differently in different recordings. The best advice i ever got from a guitar teacher, you can learn something someone else wrote and played. But, play it your own way as long as it sounds good. Make it your own. We all have different bodies. One may have longer fingers than another. One may be more flexible than another.
I was a professional pianist for years but in the "Nashville" scene. That is, I don't read music but I'm well-versed in chords, circles of fifths and fourths and basic music theory. But, as a long-time pianist, the fretboard is so frustratingly stupid that it's caused a lot of frustration for me as someone who wants to learn to play guitar. Unfortunately, I can't say this video has helped me at all. I understand the relationship between the notes and I understand the mnemonic for remembering the sequence....but, honestly this is so illogical that I can't see much practical use for it. God, the fretboard is so stupid....
Ok. So the thing is you’re comparing a piano perspective to a new way of seeing how notes are laid out. You could think of the guitar as 6 staggered piano keyboards(think Jordan Rudess/Rick Wakeman). The BEADGCF mnemonic is essentially the white keys jumbled into a sequence of 4ths (B to F = #4). We find sharps/flats relative to the natural notes. I have another video that look in the linear pattern. When I look at a piano I always use the 3/2 black key pattern to find my way around. Because the fretboard is essentially uniform on each fret (apart from the position dots) we have to think in 2D like a chessboard. Have a watch of this video and see if you see things any clearer. ru-vid.combDZYmhIlS4A?si=n-Tz2AV6coePX-cc
This is terrific. I'm using this with my guitar students and I actually made an assignment out of it where they have to fill in the information on a blank guitar fretboard.
Fantastic to hear Brad! This is only part of the story. I have a follow up/expansion of this idea that makes playing guitar so much easier in my live stream tomorrow at 7pm UK time. Well worth a watch if you want your mind blown!
Thank you for this. I've been trying to memorise the fretboard I've already meorized the E and A string cause of bar chords and wanted to memorise the whole fretboard cause I want to learn how to improvise. This made memorizing the fretboard so much easier. Thank you
"fat cats go dancing and eat bananas" was the sentence i learned in music theory in high school for all the #'s, and then we were told the first letters in reverse order is the flats. nice to finally have a different mnemonic the other way.
Proof the piano is easy mode. Suck it. Jk lol id actually love to learn piano i feel like some of what ive learned playing guitar might translate over and help too.
I heard the guitar should be tuned in B-E-A-G-C or B-E. But if it was tuned to that. It would make it harder to play chords. The circle of fifth I believe.
For the first time I came to an understanding of how fretboard works??? this video is amazing. I’m surprised it’s free. I’m subscribing dude!! Only that, this gave me the big idea of the fretboard, but putting it into practice is another thing. If there are exercises that I can do on the guitar to put this in my muscle memory, that’d be a great follow up video :)
New to guitar, coming from piano and it's been strange just not knowing where all the notes are and having to sort of work it out. Will try to keep this in mind.
Just remember that the F is the next fret higher than the E and the C is the next fret higher than the B. All of the others have a fret in-between and either a sharp or flat. Once you learn how to navigate the fretboard knowing those things it's easy to learn all of the note locations
Omg, this has literally blown the fretboard wide open for me. Finally a lesson that makes something like this easy rather than "just learn the notes" thanks so much for this
I just play, one key and scale. It seems like I can play anything, cos ppl's attention span is only long enough for 40 bars. I can play all over the neck; I just can't play more than one song. My system is simple: Memorize where every key note is. Memorize where every half-step is. Everything clicks after that. Only two half-step spots on each string above and below the 12th fret (where everything repeats).
I keep my guitars by my bedside. So when I wake up, I can see the fretboard right away & I can grab them to practice. Soon as I wake up, I look at a guitar & read off the notes on the 6th & 5th strings, to make it second nature memory ~ To let it sink in. Then, I close my eyes & think in my head, A String: 3 is C, 5 is D, 7 is E, 9 is F# & so on. Then I think about the E string & I go, “3 is G, 5 is A, 7 is B, 9 is C# & so on. I learned it in a couple of weeks. I only got overwhelmed when I tried to learn all the strings at on e. Then, I came across a teacher who said learning the 6th & 5th strings are the most important, because those two are where most blues, rock & pop are played. That was very encouraging. I’m proud to have learned the E & A strings this year, 2023. It was an important New Year’s resolution. ❤️😁
Believe it or not, I use this method except, I went further and use the scale number (7362514). So when solo, I think in terms of Chord Roots. So if an A-maj is playing, I simple know to the 1, 3, 5. If Jazz , the 7th, or the 9th( 2nd from he next octave). SO I solo with the numbers of BEAD-GCF/ 7632-514
Thank you so much! This was exactly what I needed to simplify and memorize the fretboard: Also, from below I do like the "First" vs. "Father" for my memorization anyway.
One thing RU-vid seriously needs to stop doing is making it so you can't just scroll to the point you want to. I don't need it to snap to a certain points. Great video though.
Hi Ricky, I just watched this excellent video again without distractions. I 'get it', now. I'll make a chart and learn your method..even though I do actually know them. The namonic is very useful. Cheers
OMG - I could never look at the fretboard and go "Oh, that's an A or an F#" outside of maybe first position. But what this video (and the cool accent) helped me realize is that music is math - it has patterns and I have never seen anything before like this - well done, sir. I now know where every E-F and B-C exists on the fretboard. And its A-D-G left... Nirvana
Hi Ricky, I have received your book and was wondering if you could write the number of the book lesson in the description of your videos so we can find it easily, or say that it's not in the 80 book lessons. Thanks in advance.
Hi Marcel. I recognise you from my Facebook group. There's spreadsheet in there that does that. I'll tag you :) This is a remake of lesson 5 in the book. It would be a nightmare trying to figure out which lessons are not in the book as there are 202 videos on my channel.
Man.. You saved my whole Guitar journey. 🙏❤ This is just God Send! You are the best man! I look forward to learning more from you honestly!! 2 years stuck with a dumb guitar school that won't teach me proper theory. Has the worst way to go about things. But now I'm taking it into my own hands. Starting with the theory now. RU-vidrs like you are a God send!
I found that understanding the 'Whole Step/Half Step' patterns of the different types of chords very informative as a great start off to music theory . . . but I did teach myself music theory, after already being able to play guitar and piano by ear.
It is all logical but I am not sure how this is supposed to help me quickly finding notes on the neck. In the end you need to already know where the notes are in order to find the begin of the phrases. And it is impossible doing that quickly. What really helped me is the method of using a metronome and playing all notes sequentially, avoiding empty strings and notes beyond 12th bar. So for the C low E string 8th bar A string 3rd bar D string 10th bar and so on then backwards. I do this now every day.
You are the best... The most concise, genuine method with clear explanation I ever found to navigate the fretboard with confidence. It's amazing. For those who are confused about his rules, it's a vertical navigation trick from top to bottom following his mnemonic one after another within a cycle: R1) G to B = +1 refer to the 3rd to 2nd STRING move following the mnemonic R2) F to B = +1 refer to his mnemonic cycle to start over again R3) is the combination of R1 and R2 You are genius, I've learn something today. Thank you very much, may God bless you bro.
Thank you Midevy! You need these 2 videos to expand this into something even more magnificent! The Magic Guitar Fretboard Secret You Probably Don’t Know ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LPPltkOUVto.html And this This IDEA Connects EVERYTHING On The Fretboard ru-vid.comMBwpg4iYG3c
I’ve watched your previous video on this and really found it useful. This one is better as it is short and to the point. I really had a light bulb moment with the perfect 4ths and major 3rd discussion and diagram. Thanks for a great video.
Eyup Ben. Yes... it's "involved" BUT the payoff is worth it. You need more info to see the value. You need these 2 videos to fully understand why this lesson is important. @@rickysguitar Sorry Ricky, I was only joking. Of course, I realize how important orientation on the fretboard is. And there are different methods, each with their advantages and disadvantages. It's just that all these methods are presented on the Internet as super easy, although for beginners they are all quite difficult to understand. But of course you're right, the effort is absolutely worth it. Thank you very much for your video!

Finally a fantastic and relatively easy way to memorize the notes on the fretboard - I've been working on this for years - but with your little mnemonic device I've finally cracked the code - much appreciate !!! One of the most useful theory lessons I've ever watched on RU-vid!!! Cheers from Canada!!!
for years people kept yammering at me about the circle of 5ths. I could see how it helped make sense of key signatures but just couldn't get it to make sense on the fretboard. Now I know why. My brain works in patterns and you are the only one who has ever explained the patterns in a way that makes sense.
This was a great device for finding notes. A couple of confusing things that might help. The opening segment talks about compass but then that device is replaced with a different device about high and low. The latter makes more sense so the first one felt like irrelevant knowledge that I had to disassociate with. I would love to hear how this translates to sound. Granted I can just pick my guitar up, but it's still helpful for ear training relationships
I see now anagram is a word formed from the letters of another word. Seems like a missed opportunity. Ana is a palindrome? Im starting a petition to change this.
@@identifiesas65.wheresmyche95 not to be confused with an anadrome which reads as different words backwards and forwards, also I'm not sure on how word-like palindromes have to be; as symmetric strings of numbers are often referred to as palindromes.
@@BdotRASS I just call it CLEVER! I am soooo glad YT suggested I look at this video. I'm going to be watching a lot more of Ricky's content. The power of a man talking and drawing on a piece of paper is quite phenomenal.
Great explanation. It become very easy when you explained it like this. I remember notes on fret randomly, mainly pattern of C, D, E and F, G A but your explanation connected it all together. Thanks for it
Very useful video Ricky. I’ve also noticed that the frets for both E-strings follow the chromatic scale up the neck so you can identify the first note at any fret! You can then use that beadgcf.
1:34 I thought going up in 4ths, you use the major scale formula. So to get to the 4th, starting in E, it would be E F# G# A. But you didn't do that, you just used all the natural notes. I don't know much about music theory. Just getting started really.
One more thing to note is that once you have this pattern memorized you can use it from any note on the fretboard. This will allow you to easily play in different keys.
To elaborate, scales are pretty much the same in whichever key you are in. So just knowing the pattern(not the name of each note played) will keep you in key. For example, if you play the pattern of the C major scale, but start on the D note, the pattern will take you through the notes D, E, F#, G, A, C#,D, even though you may not know those note names.
@@williambiggs3699 That would be playing in D Major using the notes you listed above. Besides the B.. You can also play the C major scale, but start on D and use the notes D E F G A B C D. That is how modes work and that would be D Dorian.
The mnemonic of B E A D G C F as a reference for key signatures seems confusing because, unless I’m misunderstanding the system, Bb has 2 flats, Eb has 3, Ab has 4, etc, but F only has 1flat, so what is the ordering here about with regard to key signatures? Respectfully, am I missing something ?
You’re right. Bb major has 2 flats, and those flats are Bb and Eb. Eb major has 3 flats and those flats are Bb Eb and Ab. Ab major has 4 flats and they are Bb Eb Ab and Db… BEADGCF just tells you the order of flats and it will always be in that order. For example a major key cannot have 3 flats with those flats being something like Bb Gb and Db
I’m jaz happy Sir, I have my own book(compiled self-notated analysis in my coll.days//I thought I’m d 1st to pinned d ACDEG!/there’s no imported music book here in my country that time/my enthusiasm wanes in d eve of yt/still have d note/bk/s in my pc’s
Best video on locating notes quickly! Coming from a classical background where we drilled in sight-reading exercises, I wish I'd had known this before!
I’ve been learning guitar for a year. Last week while i was doing an arpeggio exercise, I used BEADGCF to remember all the notes i need to hit first for each arpeggio cycling backwards through the circle of fifths. Kindve neat getting recommended this after figuring out that pattern.
Very well done! I've played from tabs but never learrned the notes. Son is taking lessons and I've asked him how he finds notes because it makes ZERO sense. This finally helped - thank you!!! To those saying you went too fast, I only had to rewind it once, so it was well laid out. Appreciate it.

There's more to this than you think! The alphabet letters reveal a more useful pattern. I did a livestream on it.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ma1AxeNGdV4.html
OK, I'll concentrate more and watch it all again with fresh eyes and ears this next time through the video. It sounds like I'll learn more than I at first thought. Thanks for your very pleasant reply.
The circle of 4th and 5ths are important tools for music. Knowing them on the fretboard will be highly beneficial (at some point). If by chance you do not know how those tools work, look them up for sure.
