This is fantastic! Jack Rigby was my grandad - wonderful to see this. I'd heard so many stories of his show and the sand dance.... but never seen it! He has a mention in Ricky Tomlinson's autobiography.... (as Jack Crosby)..... but this is just so great to see. Thank you so much Glynn!
Notice how these normal people can actually talk and get their point across without resorting to 'like' every other word. They can also pronounce TH instead of saying 'I fink' or 'nuffink'. What a generation we've ended up with.
I remember mi grandad comin to babysit for me and sister...mum and dad off to Greasbrough...I remember they said they saw Roy Castle who later blamed his time in these types of clubs...full of smoke...for his lung cancer. I used to train in a bloke's garage in the early 80's...my uncle said he'd bin handy in his time...and dropped 3 or 4 blokes at this Club...it could get tasty when I was young in the late 70's...a lot of coal miners with testosterone to get rid of on a Friday night...those rimes were full or work, fags, beer...and turns and song. And the working men's clubs of those mining villages were real community hubs. Almsot all flattened now. My dad built the estate next to the club in the 60s...foreman plumber...Johnny Woodhead. I'll say this,,,the folk back then could party...but they could graft as well...they were born to it.
I just moved to Greasbrough, think some of these places still exist, a 2 minute walk from me - they look familiar. Will have to have a look and try to figure it out. Wonder if the staff @ the club have seen this?
