On May 17th, 1943, the crew of the Memphis Belle completed their 25th and final mission of the war. Hollywood film maker, William Wyler had been flying with the crew of the Memphis Belle and other B-17's from the 91st BG for a period of weeks to make a wartime documentary above the daylight missions the 8th USAAF was flying. The Memphis Belle and her crew would become the focus for Wyler's work. Memphis Belle - A Story of a Flying Fortress was released to audiences across the United States in 1944.

Being a Memphis native, back in high school I volunteered summers for a bit to help restore the Memphis Belle shortly before the USAF took over restoration. I was pretty useless at the time, but have some fond memories crawling around inside the fuselage, stripping paint off of small parts, and removing one of the wing fuel tanks. On a semi-related note, is there anything left of the 401st BG facilities at Deenethorpe? My great uncle flew with the 401BG/613BS, and one of these days I need to make a warbird pilgrimage to the UK.

@@DCS_World_Japan that must have been some experience getting to spend that much time with the Belle! For the 401st, there is still a runway there as it’s used by a few businesses and there are (relatively) quite a few buildings left plus a wonderful memorial to the men of the 401st! If you plan a trip that way let me know if I can help as I’m a native from that area and know it well! Jon TWCC

I love these old documentaries. It fits with the Masters of the air series coming out. Unfortunately I won't watch it until I finish the book.😂

They’re great aren’t they. And the footage recorded by William Wyler and his cameramen is incredible.
