Someone has probably already said this, but the pagan thing on the font and the man in the tunnel who starts growing trees out of his face, are the same thing. He’s a pagan symbol of rebirth / renewing. Through that lens, the film is saying she needs to confront all the different elements of the toxic relationship she was trapped in (her not being able to leave the house as a metaphor for that) and the horror of her guilt. The gross rebirth bit is her peeling away all the different aspects of his character until she is just left with him. That’s why, at the end, she’s outside the house - she’s dealt with it and moved on, or is re-born and renewed. Probably.

True story... My friend ex-wife was a psycho. She acted nice until the day after they got married. She would accuse him of cheating on her everyday if he's not home right after work. As late as the 17th century, the word "apple" also functioned as a generic term for all fruit other than berries but including nuts-such as the 14th century Middle English word "appel of paradis", meaning a banana. This use is analogous to the French language use of "pomme". The origin of the popular identification with a fruit unknown in the Middle East in biblical times is found in confusion between the Latin words mālum (an apple) and mălum (an evil), each of which is normally written malum.

The beginning scene showing him seeing her and her seeing him. It's almost like he's finally seeing her trapped inside. His abusive "love" for her is trapping her and holding her. The men in Colton do this same thing to her. The Green Man chases her back into the home. The boy tells her to "hide", the vicker tells her his death is her fault. All this time she rejects the insinuation of guilt, she wants to get away from it, but the men keep forcing the guilt on her, much like her husband tried to do threatening suicide. Forcing her inside, forcing her to harm them, "look at what you've done to me". As she tries to leave, Goffrey chases her back on the grounds. The many rebirths (which is what the Green Man represents) chase her back inside. Until finally she can confront her trauma and at the end she is no longer in the house. She is sitting outside, finally free from torment and ready to start anew. In a way I wonder if the "Green Man" form was trying to aid her in a way, to push her to grow, but I'm unsure. Either way I quite enjoyed the film.
@tylerdurden5303
@tylerdurden5303 2 года назад
All the men in the village of Colton are an amalgamation of her husband. Hence, the "Russian Doll" effect at the end - until the husband finally "comes out." The wounds on the Men are the same as the wounds on the husband when she finds him at the bottom of the building. The broken right ankle, the impaled left hand... all except for the head wound. When the husband sits on the sofa he doesn't have a head wound. When Harper picks up the hatchet it is implied that she will "bury the hatchet" in order to move on. On the font, the Green Man and Sheela na gig are both symbols of fertility. Sheela na gig is also a warning against lust. Incidentally, Sheela na gig is of Celtic descent - possibly the reason why Harper had an Irish accent. However, none of the film makes any sense and the final act is bat-sh!t crazy.

The whole film is a metaphor for toxic and abusive relationships. The scene with the constant “rebirths” is metaphorical for your spouse constantly saying they’re a new person, that they’ve changed, but always end up the same person they was before. Her seeing her spouse at the end was acceptance for moving on. The visuals of the rippling and echoes is metaphorical for how your voice can carry weight. Her singing in the tunnel causing droplets to fall from the ceiling and crash into the puddle causing ripples. Her voice echoing during moments of impact. She tells her lover that she don’t care if he kills himself to leave her alone. That cause and effect of her words leads to his death. When she’s in the tunnel it’s metaphorical for seeing light at the end of the tunnel but being held back from it(the man blocking the exit) and running back into a wall(the locked door at the other tunnel entrance). It’s a metaphor for toxic relationships where the spouse feels trapped and their partner won’t let them leave. This is everything I gathered from my viewing.

I mean, it's well known by everyone that Christmas is not Jesus's birth, lol. It came from Catholics, and then other Christian groups went with it. But yes, a lot of the things Catholics did was to use pagan holidays/etc and incorporate them - a bit reason for that is controlling the narrative. Catholics were all about power, they were the power behind kings. The term "Christian" is too broad, people use the word as if they are all the same, but a Catholic, Jehova's Witness, Mormon, Baptist, etc all use the same word...but have almost nothing in common.

The movie left me feeling pretty raw. I understood the ending and what it was getting at, in that all of those men really just boiled down to reminders of her trauma with her husband. But I do understand that it would fly over most people's heads because it's graphic and over the top. Also what I notice a lot of people miss (perhaps intentionally) is that the movie doesn't try to imply that men don't suffer at all. It can be interpreted multiple ways.

From what I hear from people who have been in toxic relationship and marraiges is how hard it is to stop it from happening. It has a lot to do with psychological maipulation and just power over the abused person that makes it so hard for them.

@@Leuka_ Nice try, but I know quite a few victims of abusive relationships, some of them even in my own family. Oddly enough, they will confide in you very easily. The advice I gave, and that I saw given when I was a kid, is to fuck off of that relationship. It worked most of the time. When they didn't leave the relationship, it turned out there were ulterior motives for remaining in the relationship. There is also one family friend that I know is in the relationship due to having a submission fetish. Like I said, the people who remain, tend to want to remain, and it's not something you nor I will ever really understand, because it's a personality trait. It doesn't need to make sense. I don't even want to watch trailers of today's movies. There are so many spoilers. Also most of them have the best parts of the movies on the spoilers so you would think they are good movies but when you watch it the only good parts are all on the trailers and the rest of the movie is not good. I just ask someone who has the same taste as me when it come to movies and tv series who already watch it if it's good or bad. I'll watch it if they say it's passable or not a waste of time.

@@KWPZ21 eh, I think the spoiler talk only really applies to Marvel movies, and to a lesser extent comic book movies in general. Even the Star Wars trailers were pretty vague with what the stories was (although we come to find out the ST really had no story...) or Alita from a few years ago, unless you were a fan of the anime, the trailers really didn't encompass the full story. The trailer for Nope, all we can really gauge is it's an alien story (maybe)

@@thecunninlynguist It applies to horror movies also. That's where I first watch a trailer thinking the movies is good because of the trailer but when I watched it all the good scenes are all on the trailer which is a few. @@MrMattyG Honestly kind of confuse and quite lost, yes I am. Still, I like it. The beauty of Alex Garland movies is that we have to interpret by ourselves. However this movie demand audiences to at least need to have some knowledge of things that will appear in the movie, which mostly not. That is why after first watch, in my case, Wikipedia come in handy (research on Green Man & Sheela na gig). I don't know what actual meaning of the movie, maybe sense of guilt that leads to mental disorder? I indeed believe all was a dream or hallucinations that playing in the mind of main character. After this might be possible spoilers - Given by final scene, maybe what really happened is that she accidentally drove into the landlord, which kills him, then corpse dragged into the house, which answers blood trace. Friend then come to help. I love there are many hidden meaning or imagery, for instance ultrasound scan depicted in the tunnel, or it is just me noticed it? Maybe the couple cannot conceive child because of infertility, or maybe husband cannot satisfy lust of wifenin bed. That's why she is still virgin as shown in the scene when the vicar ask her when she lost virginity, that irritates her because she still not. Yeah, like I said, I'm confuse, but love it. Well that is my take. This is brilliant movie in my opinion.

I let the movie sit for about two days now and I’ve definitely grown to like it more. I still believe the ending was a bit excessive. I get it’s point but it kind of takes away from the message, BUT I really respect Alex Garland for having the balls to do it. Knowing this is a worldwide release makes the ending so wild to me. Thought mother! was a wild movie to see in theaters but this definitely topped it. I loved everything besides that minor complaint. The idea that Christmas has been chosen because Yule was already celebrated in December is such a stupid myth. Christmas has been celebrated in December since 4th century, 400-500 years earlier than the Germanic people were even converted to Christianity. What happened in Northern Europe like in most other places is that older customs were taken and added to the new Christian holidays. How they chose 25 December is complicated and controversial, they were debating when Jesus was born since the 3rd century... and it's pretty likely that actually they first established when the Annunciation was (middle of March) and then added 9 Months for the birth. Just because Saxons slapped some pagan customs to Christmas doesn't mean it's the same in Southern and Eastern Europe or in Asia... We actually have no idea when Jesus was born.

I don’t think it was shock value because it actually connected to the plot and themes. If you take away that scene, I think it’s harder to understand the point about misogyny being birthed by men to successive generations. Also their wounds suffering as men is transmitted by men. The final scene with pregnant friend is supposed to be the promise of ending that cycle. Removing the birthing scene takes away a lot of substance from the movie.
