My Grandfathers did too, one Royal Signals, North Africa; the other 8th Army, RASC in North Africa. He started driving a 'Quad' towing 25pdr guns. The first went to Italy but was injured & returned to the UK. The second also fought in Italy, France, Netherlands & Germany - still RASC, but as a dispatch rider.
Ridiculace as it may seem the gunnery sand table was still being used in the late 70,s with a .22 calibre rifle being cocked and fired from the top of the SIM trainer at small static rubber tank targets or being moved around by wires attached to small motors. Archaic to say the least.
