Wow, Leon Marchland going 3:31 in a dual meet is crazy. His time would have won this event by a second.

A question for the specialists: I don't understand how Hugo Gonzales was able to quite clearly beat Leon Marchand (future double medley world champion !) and Carson Foster on the 400 individual medley, to find himself some months later only 12th in the 200 medley in Budapest, more than 3" behind Léon Marchand ? He was injured, or in shape too soon perhaps? It's a mystery to me...

@nategdoes9963 Год назад
Marchand had a bad Race to start. Foster was much better at worlds and is progressing mentally in the sport. Gonzalez turns are really good and can use lactic acid to his advantage amount him really good at short course but not at par with Marchand and Foster in long course.

Short course and long course are two different beasts all together. You can "cheat" your way through short course due to more underwater opportunities each length. In long course, proficiency in the stroke matters more. That's why stroke technique and aerobic conditioning are more important in LCM, in order to minimize fatigue. Many swimmers who could get away with stroke flaws and only rely on underwaters in short course can't do so in long course.

If the 200 IM wasn’t choking. This time it is. Carson went 3:35 adding 2 seconds, all he needed was to drop 8 tenths to win or even come second. He expended too much energy in prelims, he has to learn to control his energy.

I find it hard to believe anyone "chokes" in swimming. It's highly individual and any swimmer will tell you that sometimes you may not feel as fast in the water as you thought you might. Also saying, "All he needed was to drop 8 tenths" is a crazy expectation to have when you're already so fast. I'm sure you go 3:33 in this event all the time though, right?
