Michael Phelps was in the stands watching this race and was extremely unhappy with the results. He even said that he wanted to jump in and swim a leg for Team USA right then and there. This race was what made Phelps comeback into the sport after he retired in London the year prior.

Now neither France, Brazil, Russia nor Australia has a chance of challenging the US in the 4x100 free relay, their only rival is the UK in the medley relay since the coaches always put Adrian on the free leg but since he has had surgery for treating cancer, his speed dropped quite obviously, and he blew it too in 2019. I think if they had put Pieroni or even Apple on the relay it wouldn't have happened.
