Winning pitcher Heorhii Hvrytishvili hopped on the hill early, pitching a complete game for Ukraine, after the first three runs had already crossed for Slovakia.
Over 9 innings of work he struck out as many batters throwing just 137 pitches, 92 across the heart of the plate, for a 67% strike rate. The 23-year old RHP not only had an assist on D, he also DH'd the game, drawing two walks for a .400 OPS on the day.
Ukraine had themselves a day on defense as well, shutting down Slovakia's offense for the day. In fact, besides a little bit of small ball in the 4th, Slovakia's offense was unable to make things happen on the bags once Ukraine's starter was replaced.
Meanwhile, Ukraine's bats were hot with four extra base hits on the day, 2 doubles and 2 triples. Their base runners, whether on by BB or extras, were all about taking chances to get ahead. They pulled off a squeeze play, in the bottom of the 8th, to tie things up!
This game, right down to the final play, came down to pitching as Slovakia, who walked in the winning run, allowed 7 Ukrainian batters to reach while striking out just 6.
It was Ukraine's second triple, in as many innings, however, that got the guy across the plate.
