You have no idea how refreshing it is to see a MENS garment being created with actual steps! For me there’s nothing more frustrating as a beginning sewer than to see “how to” videos with zero explanation! You just earned another subscriber!

Newbie sewer here. I've been doing tonnes of reading and watching videos - this video has been bookmarked. Not quite ready to do my first shirt, but I have learned a lot of basic transferable skills. I feel like I am becoming more comfortable and clearer in how the various pieces come together. It's really a beautiful process. Soon, I will need to take my own measurements and either draft our or adapt a commercial pattern... my slightly more girthy mid-section is causing me some hang-ups. Sadly, I can't even deconstruct any of my dozens of dress shirts I wore years ago to use as a guide. All the same, thank you for this great video and demonstration!

Fantastic tutorial! Thank you so much! I was having a very hard time trying to follow a pattern for a shirt I'm working on and I found everything I was confused about in this video (the rolling method and finishing all the seams). My only recommendation for your channel in general is to make your video thumbnails a picture of the finished product (you can still include your logo and text of what the video is) in order to make it easier to scroll through your channel to find other videos I'm interested in watching (and to make it more attractive and easier for people when they're searching for any video to pick yours out). Lol! Do you have, or can you make a video explaining the best fabrics to use (100% cotton, different grades thereof and where to purchase, etc..)for men’s dress shirt? I was going to try my first effort using 100% cotton fabric from one of the ‘big box’ fabric stores, but my goal is to make a shirt using the best fabric possible. It is a little confusing and intimidating when you start looking at all the various options... Thanks again, your channel is very professional and your method of explanation is top of the mark on RU-vid. Seriously, I’ve watched many, many and your channel is superior imho.

@@zefdin101 I don't have a video, but you'll find if you ask for "shirting" you'll be in good shape. For the most part, it is offered in 100% cotton, but be sure when you purchase.

@SewpBox
@SewpBox 3 года назад

@kylel200
@kylel200 5 лет назад
Hey@@SewpBox , I didn't do a good job of wording that. I mean how do you know what size to cut for all your different peices that make the shirt? How do you go about measuring and knowing what size peices will make what size shirt?
@SewpBox
@SewpBox 5 лет назад
@@kylel200 If you're flat pattern drafting, you are drafting to a specific size, creating all the pieces for that size and adding seam allowances. If you're using a commercial pattern, by and large multiple sizes are built into the pattern. To determine what size to cut from a commercial shirt pattern, use your chest measurement to determine what size shirt to cut. Don't always rely upon the recommended size, however. Check the chest ease in the pattern. You want to make sure it reflects the silhouette you are looking for. 4"-6" of ease is pretty standard (the less ease, the slimmer the fit.)

Your tip for guiding the seams using an ironed edge was a game changer. Also, this new collar is looking waaaay less wonky. I’m making my boyfriend a garment for the first time and your help is really appreciated, thank you!

Sorry for the late reply. I'm not certain to which product you are referring. If you can give me a bit more information, I'll see what I can do to assist.

I'm using this to help me make my first shirt. (womens, but doesn't matter) just did the yoke, and it worked beautifully. next step, get rid of the silly interfacing nonsense, and then collar.

This is a really good tutorial with lots of good tips, thanks for making it. I have a question please: Do you make the rolled hem at the bottom of the shirt before or after you have made the flat felled seams at the sides of the shirt? I’m struggling with this myself at the moment. What should come first; hemmed bottom or felled side seams? Thanks very much.

The hem is done last.

I did not watch the whole video yet. But you start off with saying it is classically fitted. I like to wear my shirts extremely fitted. Is it just a matter of getting the right size and making the darts deeper? Or does slim fit imply more than that?
@SewpBox
@SewpBox 4 года назад
Fit trumps fashion every time! The techniques shown here demonstrate construction only. They are based on a fitted shirt in that it has shaping built into it that give a more fitted silhouette. It's always best practice to sew up a muslin first to correct fit, then to do the final construction.

Hey. Thanks for the tutorial. What is the name of the glue you using to hold the armscye seam before you topstitch ?
@SewpBox
@SewpBox 2 года назад
Roxanne's Glue Baste. However, you can use plain old white school glue, as long as it's not permanent.

The SewpBox trick is in having it not spill over to the bodice. Quick one, do you have a pattern for your shirting on your blog?

Very nice, but how do you make a tiny hem?
@SewpBox
@SewpBox 2 года назад
Carefully! Running a stay stitch where you want to turn the hem is very helpful.
