It's a shame Derek won't be at 2021 Olympics.. I competed against him in high-school, obviously lost but it's cool to see someone I've met in the Olympics
@@aarnimustakallio7769 well to be fair you use what you are trained for, I mean I'm French, If it wasn't taught at school, I wouldn't have picked English... So if I was now forced to learn imperial system it would be a bother, can be done for sure but why bother when I have a perfectly fine solution at my disposition? Tl;Dr the human brain is designed to go for simplicity, we don't want to learn imperial system and the same goes in the other way
Hmm maybe but nobody wants to build the stadiums in the first place, whoever holds them has to take a big hit to their budget and the stadiums are left to sit and fall into disrepair after the games, well at least I remember reading that somewhere so don't quote me
@@mariellegomez5089 Probably postponed. Paris is already scheduled for 2024 and Los Angeles for 2028. Japan spent millions on the stadium so they can't throw it away. So there has to be one in Tokyo in 2021 or even 2022.
I didn't realize just how sharp Drouin was that day until watching this again. He was so far over every height until 2.38. Barshim was nursing an injury which was why he was only taking a very short approach. In events where he was jumping 2.42 or 2.43 he used an 8-stride approach, twice as long as he was using here. He still cleared 2.36 with this short run-up but that's not where he would have jumped from his full approach. Perhaps Drouin still could have jumped 2.40 on this day but he didn't have to.
The scene is the final of men's high jump at the Tokyo Olympics. Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi was facing Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim in the final. Both of them jumped 2.37 meters and were on par ! Olympic officials gave three more attempts to each of them, but they were unable to reach more than 2.37 meters. One more attempt was given to two both of them, but Tampberi withdrew from the last attempt due to a serious leg injury. The moment when there was no other opponent in front of Barshim, the moment when he could have easily approached the gold alone ! But Barshim asked the official "if the gold can be shared between the two of us if I withdraw from the final attempt ?" The official checks and confirms and says "yes then the gold will be shared between the two of you". Barshim then had nothing to think about, announces withdrawal from the last attempt. Seeing this, the Italian opponent Tamberi ran and hugged Barshim and screamed ! What we saw there was a great share of love in sports that touches our hearts. It reveals the indescribable sportsmanship that makes religions, colors and borders irrelevant !!!
Also read more about them, Barshim helped Tamberi when he was injured , they are friends and this was a beautiful moment shared b/w them , they handed each other their gold medals as well.
tamberi was injured just before rio 2016. not during tokyo 2020 final. Barshim decided to comply with Tamberi's demand for a dual gold medal because he had suffered from the same injury of tamberi years before, so he chosed solidarity over competition.
No he is not necessarily implying that tall people can jump high, but the advantage of being tall is that you have higher center of gravity, which would mean that a shorter person would have to use a lot more effort and power to get over the bar.
Being almost an octogenarian I can easily do the Limbo at that height! One cannot help the beautiful movement of those young men as they fly over the bar. To think that the final jumping force comes from one leg, that is really amazing ! Congratulations to all of them.
As a freshman my pole vault record was something around 2.5 meters and the first guy’s jump just frickin backflips close to my record... im a sophomore now and my record is closer to 4.5 meters but just to think that a man can jump higher than a person with a pole can..
I just tried to imagine how high would they jump, if i ever see them in real life for example if there would be 7 ft giant in front if us they would still jump above him like it's nothing.
I did high jump in grade school and a little bit in highschool gym class and I placed first! Sadly my genetics kept me at 5’10”…. This is such a cool sport!!!
