@@StoicBarbarian There's no objective right or wrong when it comes to fashion. It's all subjective personal preference. I like leather slides, but would never use them around water.

Fellow wide feet and flat foot guy. I stuck to flip flops/sandals most of my life because no freaking shoe, let alone boot could fit me. Got an Asics shoe with custom arch support insoles and it literally puts a jump in your steps.

I’ve had cheap ones and Toms… they don’t last! But they are great. I’d get 3 cheap pairs in different colours. Cause the cheap ones still look fine. And less annoying when fall apart

According to her, leather, lol. If you're going to be near or especially in water, then do yourself a favor and forget about fashion. Just get yourself an actual pair of water shoes made out of the best synthetic materials science has to offer, and rest well knowing there's nothing wrong with occasionally prioritizing function over form.

MS - definitely not leather. Use water socks or purpose built shoes for that. Rubber sandals are great for coming in or out of the water, or wearing in showers at the gym. It’s not a literal NEVER. It’s a “Never in a setting unless you’re specifically going to need to be in and out of the water.”

Considering her hatred of sandals is the fact that they expose male feet, I think it's pretty obvious she'd prefer slides over flip flips. That said, if you're going to be around water, wearing leather would be a textbook example of form over function. Leather and water are a bad combination.

They're good for outdoors, but that's it. They really don't make much sense in town. I still remember when I was a young man in the navy walking onto the ship during a weekend of day drinking wearing sandals. Immediately hearing the officer of the deck yelling "Put on some damn shoes! No one wants to see your ugly hairy feet!" Which is exactly the point, no one wants to see your feet, and wearing socks with them just looks goofy.

@@Thomas-io1fr - Growing up in Colorado (which is an extremely active/fit state where Chacos were invented for kayakers), it’s weird to hear. I think the thing we can agree on is: it depends on the circumstances and local culture (e.g. “acceptable outdoors and at the beach”). I can get where in California, where it’s temperate year-round, they may have certain fashion “rules”, but I guess my point is that there’s nuance. For instance, if you wear a pair of chukka boots and chinos on Rainey Street in Austin summer when it’s 100+ degrees out with 80% humidity, you’re going to get some weird looks and be an awkward, sweaty mess. Likewise, if you’re in an active place, sport sandals are something you can get away with around town because everyone has been similarly active. On the flip side, while a peacoat and suit might look good in New York, a Columbia puffer might stick out less in Oregon. So… would I wear Birkenstocks to a nice restaurant and show at a historic theater? Probably not. Would I wear them in a situation where it’s blistering hot and I wanted to elevate a chino short and short sleeve sport shirt look to bar hop when it’s blistering hot? Absolutely. As with most things in life, I think you have to appreciate circumstances and culture and not be overly dogmatic.

@@EpicDadventures As a Southern Californian, I couldn't agree more with you. Sandals are functional for the heat. No pair of shoes-which inevitably necessitate socks-will ever be as breathable as sandals. And to the point of, "Why wear sandals if you're going to be wearing them with socks anyways??", the answer is because sandals with socks are still more breathable than shoes with socks. I was surprised to find out that Ashley is apparently based in San Diego; I figured she must be based in New York. I can just imagine her judging every other person she meets who's dressed for comfort during the hot California summers. Maybe she lives close to the beach, which would explain her inability to comprehend that sometimes it can get so unbearably hot that wearing anything at all is uncomfortable. That said, I recently learned about linen, and I have a pair of linen no-show socks arriving today. I'm curious to see if they're really that much cooler than cotton. If so, I might look into getting an espadrille that hopefully doesn't look as effeminate as all the ones Ashley shows in her videos.

@@Thomas-io1fr It can get hot in town, you know. In fact, in an urban heat island, sandals make even more sense in town than out of town. And not every guy has hairy feet. My wife is not particularly generous with compliments, but she's complimented my feet and hands on multiple occasions. Saying all guys should always cover their feet makes about as much sense as saying all guys should wear gloves whenever in town. See my response to OP for further elaboration for why this contempt for sandals bugs me so much.

@@MayTheSchwartzBeWithYou I've lived everywhere you can imagine. Including, Bahrain, so trust me I know concrete hot enough to cook a steak. It just isn't widely socially accepted here in the states. Perhaps it's a small town thing where no one will care. And I've seen in places like California and Hawaii closer to water front where it's more acceptable. But generally in the city, you go to a nice restaurant in sandals, you're getting turned back.

Wear shoes that fit your feet, realize your fit don’t look that big from any other angle than straight down and live a long and happy life :)

This exactly. I agree with everything she says, except for not wearing sandals/flip flops. For over half the world population, the climate is way too hot to wear shoes.

I mean, it's all subjective. I don't think showing ankle is terrible if you're in good shape, but what I don't understand is being passionately opposed to sandals, and then championing ankle exposure. Exposing your ankles is basically a notch more formal than wearing slides. So why champion the former and condemn the latter? Just seems arbitrary. To me, exposing your ankles is as natural as exposing your wrists, and exposing your feet is as natural as exposing your hands. Clothes are all unnatural anyway, so why do we feel like these rules are set in stone?

@@MayTheSchwartzBeWithYou agree to a large extent, and this is also why most of these list aren’t that useful sometimes. Clothes and their symbolism are cultural and social constructs and as such what would be considered “right” or “wrong” depends a lot on where you are and you are doing. Furthermore, one should not forget personal style/taste as that definitely is also important. I often wear things that are different from the norm simply because I like it. Ps. I wear both no-show (aka exposed ankles) and sandals 🙂 just personally wouldn’t consider sandals appropriate in all situations 👍
