With the tons of love we got on the Boyz N The Hood video we decided to watch the most recommended movie from that video which is Menace II Society; nothing but love for all of you! Patreon: / octokrool Twitter: / octokrool
This movie is a masterpiece. It shows how cruel growing up in the hood can be and how good kids turn into monsters just to survive. A lot of times kids die before they find something to live for and if they do their past catches up to them before they can change themselves . The cycle is vicious and endless.
100% this. My family is from Watts, growing up in Jordan Downs. Nickerson Gardens was right across the way, but seemed like a different universe even though it's 7 minutes away. This movie is an utter tragedy, so incredibly excellent. I pray nobody takes it as a glorification. It's all pure death and suffering intensified. My fondest memories in life were all about bringing people together and creating love. Unity is all that matters.
It’s crazy watching someone react to these movies. Some of us are so desensitized from actually living it that the differing responses are surprising. I actually learned something about myself watching this.
These *90's* hood movies have two objectives to show the outside world what's going on in the hood but also to influence those in the hood to maybe change
Sadly I think a lot of kids let the lesson slide by them and wanted the action side. All the kids I ever knew who saw this always idolized O-Dog. And Ricky getting shot in Boys N the Hood just made kids say, “ should’ve had a gun “.
The fact that you guys are doing Black classics will def get you guys more views and traffic. Y’all are so attentive and real. Much love and support!❤️
@@inmymindproduction being black isn't what Africans consider themselves, its just that they are. Black Americans are minorities in their country so they were given a denomination as "Black". Africans have their own nations and cultures that they hold over ethnicity and even Africa as a whole.
@@theheadlesslegend It’s sad that this even have to be said which shows disregard to Black Americans as our own ethnicity. Thank you for taking the time to explain this.
Now watch Juice, South Central, Dead Presidents Higher Learning and finish it off with Don't Be a Menace in South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood....
Keep in mind that Kevin/ aka O' Dog was supposed to be about 16 years old. He wasn't really able to be a rational person. They really wanted to show him as a child or childish, even though he was living in a war zone and wanted to be a gangster.
I knew not to kill people when I was 16, just kidding. I hear what you are saying, its different growing up in an environment like that compared to where I grew up, Still no matter where you live most people still know right from wrong
@@bxvs2732 did you grow up in the hood where every other adult was doing the very things you knew were wrong? ... if not, stop acting like you would have done any better in that environment. Your inability to understand that lets me know you wouldn't have been any better.
@@bxvs2732 easy to say that from your cozy home. For some it’s survival. When nobody will hire you. Nobody cares where you sleep or when your next meal will come. Only option is to take! And as a child this is reality for some. They learn to sell drugs as a way to provide. And with that comes the territory. Can’t let people take what’s yours. Nor can you let them expose you as weak. Slippery slope! Can’t let one person slide because the rest will keep coming after you. Weakness is not acceptable! People who can’t see the truth are the real problem.
I saw Set it Off in the comments and I highly recommend it be next Oh and listening to your commentary was great.... I kept thinking who the hell is Kevin, then I said oh they mean O-Dawg 😂😂😂
@@southlondon86 I'm a big fan of the New Jack Swing subgenre of R&B music so I love New Jack City. Absolutely worth watching for Wesley Snipes' performance alone. I personally don't lump it in with the aforementioned 'trinity' because its not a coming of age story.
The reason he shot the Asian couple was kind of like a doupe to the Asian and black tension in LA around the time an Asian store owner shot and killed a 15 year old girl over “stealing” and orange juice when in all actuality when you look at the stores video tape she was clearly reaching for her money to pay for it . The store owner got off and served no jail time
And the riots that happened afterwards where alot of hardworking innocent Korean and black businesses were destroyed forced koreans to use their military training and defend their own stores because the cops wouldn't.
Saw your Boyz N The Hood reaction & it was great! Was hoping you'd react to Menace 2 Society. I'd recommend Juice, Dead Presidents, Blood In Blood Out or American me which all have similar themes of growing up on the streets
I dead ass cried at the end of this movie........ I think for every man in that life we saw ourselves as Caine and when he died right when he was about to change his life...... he died. It reminded us all of our reality.....
Keep in mind, the events of this movie takes place over the span of 3/4 months. Kaine was about to graduate at the beginning, which are normally held in June. At Ronnie’s going away party, Kaine says it’s the end of summer, which would indicate it’s roughly August/September. And it’s so real. That’s how fast things change.
I love how in a movie about street gangs, racism, drugs and drive by shootings, that the biggest reaction from you guys is how good the ribs looked on the BBQ 🤣🤣🤣
That's a great movie and a better depiction of growing up in the hood with your friends in l.a. it wasnt all drivebys and gang banging sometimes it was damn how imma hide this boner in class lol
Millions of kids around the world grow up in environments like that. There are studies that have proved children growing up in inner-city America, end up having PTSD like many soldiers coming home from war zones. Salute to all America's service members
Unfortunately that was how it was in the hood at that time. Ignorant or high parent raising these kids who turn in to criminals. I grew up in the hood. Its definitely stuff u can't say to people.the situation always escalates that fast
I know you two probably won’t see this... be you two really have a gift.. honestly I think your channel would grow even bigger by reviewing black movies.. it’s crazy seeing you two react like this because I grew up in a area in the 90s just like the movie... I’ve made mistakes.. but in august I start medical school... everyone has a story.. and a good side..
Thank you Stick, we honestly appreciate that and the growth of the channel is shocking to me; never thought it be so quick. Also, we're both proud of you and your accomplishment of starting medical school; I know you'll succeed man. Mistakes don't make the person, it's what you learn from that that do; nothing but respect man!
Congrats stick! I live in Oklahoma and both of my doctors are black......it made me sad when I realized how shocked me and my family were. We need to normalize breaking generational curses, we need to normalize moving forward but still reaching back to teach and not forget where we came from.
Proud of you for not letting the hood keep you trapped. But don't let your new life make you forget it either. Congratulations and prayers for God's steps over your new journey in life. You got this!
I agree. Not a lot of channels watch Black movies, especially if they aren't Black. You two may have found a niche and may fill a void here on RU-vid. We can help you all with suggestions. I hope you continue to go, I really like your reactions.
I was 13 yrs old, in the 8th grade when this came out. It was as traumatizing as a movie could possibly be. This shit stole some of my innocence. It was so crazy to see this level of violence be so normal and excepted. These dudes were kids, and they already had bodies under their belt.
I saw it for da first time earlier this year IM 15 rn and low-key taught me a lot even tho the movie is in LA and I'm in the Bronx it reminded me a lot of my hood and the people around me
Yo my boy Jericho Green. Wassup. Yeah, it’s definitely a great film that highlights the brutalities and violence that was going on in the hood at that time and after understanding a bit more about what it is, it’s a movie that's definitely grown on me a whole lot. I liked it when I first watched it, but after thinking about it, it’s a phenomenal film for sure.
My Dad exposed me to hood movies since I was young... I've seen things in the streets.. took part in doing bad and I can tell you it's not just a movie.. Art imitating life
Menace II Society was the version of Boyz N Da Hood that Trey and Ricky didn’t make it out of the hood. Also imagine if Trey decided to live the street life instead of leaving for college.
Even though I saw this movie like a thousand times since the mid 90s, watching you guys react to this is like watching it for the first time all over again. Thanks for the vid guys!
I love your genuine reactions. Every moment seems pure and you guys seem to genuinely enjoy watching and discussing the major themes and topics! Great vid guys 👏
Never saw anyone react to this movie! The older I get the more I empathize with the characters as, while they made terrible choices, they are also victims of circumstance. So tragic. Just subscribed!
Fun fact: Tupac Shakur was originally cast to play Sharif, but was fired which led to a physical fight with co-director Allen Hughes. He thought Sharif wasn’t hood enough. Shakur was charged with assault and battery. Shakur bragged about the altercation during an appearance on ‘Yo! MTV Raps.’ A tape of the appearance was played at the trial as evidence against him and was sentenced to 15 days in jail.
Also imagine how desensitized and warped they have to be from all that trauma and made to believe that’s everyday life, but are expected to act like normal people and contribute to society.
Right, I think that’s the underlying theme of this film….people not from the ghetto can’t understand how murder is taken so casual in those environments. It’s of the human condition to adapt. The crazier the environment, the crazier the adaptation. I grew up middle class but end up living in the hood as an adult. I heard gunshots so often every night, It got to the point where it was part of the ambiance, I’ll roll over and go to sleep.
@@tswagg504 your comment kind of reminded me of a scene in the movie Big where Josh Baskins gets really scared the first night in New York because of hearing gunshots and screaming and then sometime later during a similar scenario, he goes right to bed.
Great reaction guys. Y’all seem like cool genuine people. Nice to see things from y’all’s perspective at the end. I saw this movie when I was like 10. The opening scene lives rent free in my head, and also Kane’s death. Movie suggestion: Set It Off, Hardball
Great reaction/review. The crazy thing about Caine was that he got killed b/c he didn't want to take care of his responsibilities (getting Ilene pregnant), but was willing to take care of someone else's (Anthony, Purnell's son). If he would've accepted he had a baby on the way, Ilene wouldn't have told her cousin, the cousin wouldn't have confronted Caine & O-Dog, they wouldn't have stomped him out, and the cousin wouldn't have retaliated. But at the same time, if he did step up & take responsibility, he probably wouldn't have left with Ronnie and he eventually would've got charged for accessory and went to jail or been murdered by some guys who would have retaliated against Caine & O for killing the guys who killed Caine's cousin. So either way, Caine was destined to live a short life. I recommend Higher Learning next. Another Laurence Fishburne & Ice Cube movie.
Maybe if Caine and O are the same person and O was the tough persona Caine created to deal with the trauma of his up bringing... And then his death just means the good side of him is dead... He's all o dog now??
I appreciate reactors who actually watch the film. I don’t want to see someone cracking jokes and trying out a standup routine for subs. I want to see people who have never seen some of these great films genuinely watch and enjoy. Keep up the good work.
You reactions to the opening scene had me dying LOL. That movie is one of the rawest films ever made. My cousins grew up in that hood in the 90's. That movie got it 100% right.
I really love your channel dudes, I run a movie club with friends at a forum and I'm showing Menace to them on June 1, I already did Boyz N the Hood and they enjoyed the heck out of it. Keep going bros
30:02 had me dying! that part of the movie has been a "meme" before memes. my cousins & kids n school used to imitate that run and get laughs Everytime
😂😂😂 the same thing from where im from too.. the good ol days..that run is so damn funny..you do that run to somebody who seen the movie and they gone be in tears laughing
I’ve always found this movie to be so poetic. Caine acting as a stand in for any kid fresh outta high school living in the hood and what the environment can do to influence someone. In the end the drive by is to represent how his actions and carelessness ending up killing him in the end. He did too much to go out and wipe his slate clean.
This is every day life for a lot of people. I'm born and raised West Side of Chicago and this was extremely accurate. Life and death just walking out the house
Great reaction. A glimpse of what it like growing up for young black males in American. Kevin lived to showed he was hardened by the streets he’s always ready he grew up a soldier
Now that you have seen this and Boyz N the Hood. You MUST WATCH "Dont be a menace in south central whilst drinking your juice in the hood"... you will literally die laughing
In the original script, Anthony does get killed in the shooting. But New Line made the screenwriter take it out, feeling that it was too much. But the reality is, kids like Anthony caught stray bullets in drive-by shootings during that era in South Central LA.
Y’all should watch “Blood in blood out” it’s based on prison gangs and violence or “American me” which is based on a true story on how the Mexican Mafia was made both movies came out around the same time as Menace ll society and Boyz hood I think you guys will find them interesting
The craziest shit is this is REALLY how some of us grew up. I’m from Newark, NJ and some of My classmates in 4th Grade had guns bigger than my arm in my classrooms and sold drugs to the teachers bro 😢. If only people knew bro!
Yea out of all the hood movies this ending is the one that gets me the most... He was legit about to pull out of the driveway and move to another city. And I just wanna get, “He took the cheeseburgers too!” on a shirt now for some reason 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That's the saddest part, he was about to finally take the step into changing his life for the better. If merch is ever something I can get into the future I'd love to sell a shirt with that quote on it 😂
Karma! If Kane hadn't trashed that young girl he'd be alive and leaving. I'm female and all for the female. What happened to that young girl truly happens alot. Innocent girls like her get taken by older cute boys, not knowing what they're really about. Don't know the game. And Kane didn't give a damn about his baby she's carrying. Definitely wasn't gonna be there for it. Hate when Bros do little Sisters like that.
@@noneofyourdamnbusiness9012 Well yeah . You're right ,it's a possibility the baby could or could not be Kane's. Maybe I'm going on this young girl could be so crazy about a street boy . Like I said ,and not knowing the game and get messed up. Maybe I'm basing my opinion on real life happenings I know about. I know neither one of them. I'm the type that's always go deep into movies 🤗😄 Oh well , it's just a movie..Enjoy your day. Peace and 💜
I know I’m a year late but man, i felt like i was watching this with yall as if it was my first time. I seen this for the very first time when quarantine first hit. A tragic movie because of how true it is. Menace is definitely one of my favorite movies of all time.
NEXT MOVIES: 2.Juice 3.Set It off 5. City Of God 6.Training Day 5.American Gangster 6. American History X 7. Dead Presidents 8. Get Out 9. Us 10. Freedom Writers 11. 4 Brothers 12. get rich or die trying
I like how y'all naming all hood movies lol,that's hilarious.I'll name a couple myself that y'all didn't name: 1.Shottas 2.In Too Deep 3.Above The Rim 4.Friday 5.State Property 6.American Me 7.South Central
Just imagine... This was life for so many families in the 90s... Movies like this and Boyz in tha Hood are classic because they're so relatable to us from that era. I wanna suggest "Baby Boy"
This might sound crazy but it deserved a oscar because we got so invested in his character and care about him ,that's cinema in my opinion and I was really hurt when he died ,this movie touched me man .
You should watch Colors next, it's like the Latino version of Boyz in the Hood and Menace II Society. If you want to jump over to the "blue side" : "Training Day" or "End of Watch"
