Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy:
Symphony No. 4 in A major, Op. 90 "Italian" (with Score)
Composed: 1831 - 1833
Conductor: Georg Solti
Orchestra: Chicago Symphony Orchestra
00:00 1. Allegro vivace (A major)
10:10 2. Andante con moto (D minor)
16:58 3. Con moto moderato (A major)
24:30 4. Saltarello: Presto (A minor)
The Italian Symphony was finished in Berlin on 13 March 1833, in response to an invitation for a symphony from the London (now Royal) Philharmonic Society; he conducted the first performance himself in London on 13 May 1833 at a London Philharmonic Society concert. The symphony's success, and Mendelssohn's popularity, influenced the course of British music for the rest of the century. The Germania Musical Society of Boston gave the first performance in the United States, on 1 November 1851, with Carl Bergmann conducting.
Mendelssohn himself, however, remained dissatisfied with the composition, which cost him, he said, some of the bitterest moments of his career; he revised it in 1834 and even planned to write alternative versions of the second, third, and fourth movements. He never published the symphony, and it appeared in print only in 1851; thus it is numbered as his "Symphony No. 4", even though it was in fact the third he composed.

This symphony, along with the Nutcracker Suite by Tschaikovsky was the only classical music Mom and Dad had-- which I discovered at the age of five. I played the grooves off that album. Next year, after he was transfered to the Air Force Academy, I felt emboldened to actually break the number one rule: Go straight home from school. I, instead, went to Ms. Ballentine's home (well-known piano teacher) and asked her to teach me. She said that she had NEVER had a child come to her before the parents. Although very young (not quite six) she took me on!

Excellent recording and performance! Only here woodwinds sound weak 29:26 . Maybe Mendelssohn forgot a second horn doubling the melody? Or to use more octaves for the melody? The score also misses to mark a F for the woodwinds. The Sf was not played, or not enough. This one of the climaxes of the piece, and the coda of the whole symphony.
@loveclassicalmusicalot
@loveclassicalmusicalot 2 года назад
Is it just me, or does the fact that this Symphony begins in a major key and ends in the tonic minor foreshadow Mendelssohn's next symphony? That's because the first movement of the Reformation Symphony begins in D Major and ends in the tonic minor.
