This is a wonderful performance of one of my favorite pieces. The winds play magnificently -- and the flutist, whom we hear so prominently in the fourth movement, is Doriot Anthony Dwyer, who appears to have been the second woman to hold a principal chair in a major U.S. orchestra. She held that position from 1952 to 1990.

A magnificent recording by Munch and Boston, a classic just like their brilliant recording of Mendelssohn's 3rd as well.

Recorded on October 28, 1957, in Symphony Hall, Boston, this record was originally issued in 1958 as RCA Living Stereo LSC-2221. Four-time Grammy winner (and John Pfeiffer's star engineer - the father of "Living Stereo") Lewis W. Layton made the recording; five-time Grammy winner Richard Mohr produced it. Having listened to the "Reformation" for over fifty years, by recording and in-concert, this remains my "desert island" performance. It has often been said that there is no such thing as perfection; this recording is an exception that proves the rule. Thank you for posting this excellent transfer of a true classic.

This remains for me one of the finest performances and recordings of anything I know. Maestro Munch and his Bostonians were inspired the day this was recorded, and oh, those Symphony Hall acoustics!

With respect, I should add [at least] four additional "Living Stereo" recordings made by Dr. Munch and the BSO for RCA: their Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique, Brahms Symphony No. 4, Saint-Saëns Symphony No. 3 ("Organ"), and Schubert Symphony No. 9 ("Great").
