The Menendez brothers, Lyle and Erik, were convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents. Though they admitted to the murders, the brothers claimed they acted in self-defense after years of abuse from their parents. The prosecution argued the murders were motivated by greed and the brothers’ desire to inherit their parents’ fortune. The brothers were sentenced to life in prison. More recently, the brothers’ lawyer has filed a petition for a new hearing based on new evidence that supports the brothers’ claims of abuse. This new evidence includes an affidavit from Roy Rosselló, who claims he was sexually abused by Jose Menendez as a teenager, and a letter allegedly written by Erik to his cousin detailing the abuse.
