I described "To Ride,Shoot Straight & Speak the Truth" as a philosophy book when I ordered a replacement copy a few years ago. I wasn't able to pick it up at the yuppiefied book store but when I could go, I remembered what I'd told the ponytailed manager. I went to the Philosophy section & there were two copies. I couldn't stop chuckling at the cash register.

I especially like the part of the book where Cooper calls Sergeant Alvin York a liar@@doughesson

Don't you think that "thanks" to the tactical/SOF training the police (as well as civilians) receive on massive scale these days in USA, they're much more trigger happy then those 25 years back?

+Shane K We do not shoot the second we see someone with a gun. The point Col. Cooper makes is that we are in a mental state to be ready to shoot. It shortens the processing time needed. The trigger to actually fire is if the person with the gun makes a threatening move where we have now already eliminated any delaying reaction time than if we had not been mentally in the mode to react thanks to this type of mental conditioning. I personally encountered many persons with guns on the street and this training helped to be in a heightened state of readiness for those encounters.

+Alfred Zig Evidence would show if anything less 'trigger happy' because of the litigious nature of current US society. Plenty of examples of officer friendly getting ambushed. I feel I made it through 35 years on the street relatively unscathed to a large degree as a result of this video.

+Mitch Snider I probably didn't express myself correctly - maybe because English is my FL - and therefore before I get to my answer, I must state that this video is a real jewel and I thank you very much for posting it here for us. I enjoyed every minute of it. I clearly see how it could help you survive your days as an LEO. I think, more than anything, this part 24:10 - 25:55 characterizes the lesson it gives us. But, lets be fare - THIS IS NOT how LEO are trained these days in US. They've been too many examples where officers had all the means to be THAT in charge of situation, but the just took a shortcut and simply fired. And fired multiple rounds. Even when the attacker WAS NOT armed with a firearm !!! And as for your "evidence would show" - well, the evidence showed, yet the policemen where freed ... and people have started rioting ... and have stopped trusting the police ...

+Alfred Zig Don't believe everything the main stream media would have you believe (Hands up, don't shoot). As the Director of Training for my Sheriff's Office for over 9 years I know exactly how officers are trained and your examples are dead wrong. This video was shown at every firearms training in the academy I did and as a refresher in-service. If we shot every threat we encountered things would be different but they are not in spite of what the media is trying to sell. No one takes a 'shortcut'. All lives matter, not just the black ones, particularly to those who wear a badge and have made helping others their profession and life's work. You only use deadly force when you perceive that you or another are about to die. Investigated officers were are free or found guilty by a jury, just like everyone else.

The only thing I disagree with you on that statement is that it is an unpopular opinion. Many men his age were die hard wheel gunners. Even in my profession of law enforcement it was not until about 1990 that departments finally started switching over. Of course Col. Cooper was military so the 1911 would have been part of his kit. But he did evaluate other weapons and many modifications were made to the Browning designed 1911. For his time that was the best piece of hardware available. And if you have shot one you know you can't find a sweeter trigger pull, even on a striker fired weapon like the Glock. There is also the concept of pick one gun and get really, really good with it and don't change it for the soup of the day. That was part of his Scout Rifle program concept. It is still easier to conceal carry a single stack 1911 .45 than any double stack 9mm. At least Glock made the mod 21, a .45 double stack, which is what I carried on duty for most of the back half of my career.
