Another enjoyable reaction. I love how you're able to both empathize and disagree with both Louis and Lestat. A lot of people tend to 'take sides' but forget that they're vampires and neither is completely right or wrong. I'm excited for you to meet Claudia.

In episode 1 Lestat basically said he was actually really interested in becoming a priest and studied up on it extensively but his father and brothers didn’t agree. They beat and starved him for days and Lestat called out to god but no help came so he stopped believing. In short, he has religious trauma.

Your point about Louis always struggling with who he is is very important, I think. He struggled for respectability and position and he struggled with his homosexuality. But also, he struggled with his relation to other people and ethics. In the confessional scene, he expressed concern that he lives off the lives of others, off their exploitation. He was already conflicted over the morality of his existence and I think, on some level, he feels Lestat turning him has made him a vampire twice.

Love you awareness to all sides of this. Louis is totally valid in his struggle with his humanity and Lestat is understandable in his frustration with Louis as he's a much more established vampire who no longer thinks the same. They're SO bad at communicating and it makes everything worse and events continue to unfold as a result of their own mistakes. This show is just so good lol

The amount of damage "unreliable narrator" has done because certain fans are incapable of allowing people to view their favorite in a poor light so they have to color any new viewers experiences.... they don't even care that in doing so they're undermining the actual victims experience. Let people draw their own conclusions.

Yea like I called it epsiode 1 as just a thought, but then alot of people starting confirming it..I get it..they were excited that I was onto something but..try and let me just say things without answering them...MY BRAIN CONNECTS DOTS FAST!!the slightest hint or giveaway..and I can almost anticipate a full episode or season..no lie..less is more for me personally

One thing I noticed while watching that you touched on as well. Louis is a gentlemen (killing and blood drinking aside), a brilliant businessman, a thoughtful brother, a fucking vampire with amazing gifts and HE is the one being told to put sir at the end of his sentence. I don't know if it was right or wrong but him killing the alderman seemed inevitable when he realized he was never going to get respect from these people "the right way."

Once again, I appreciate and enjoy the fact that you give a well=balanced reaction to what's going on in each episode and where each character is coming from (even when they're being they're own worst enemies because they're communication is so poor), and hearing about your own experiences and feelings about the racism being experiences by Louis - it's a pleasure to watch your reactions! Couldn't help but chuckle at the way your expression changed after cheering on Louis' slice n' dice of the Alderman and then seeing the 'extravagant' display of his work 🤣 - but he definitely had it coming! I'm not much of a Lestat fanboy but my one defence of him is that he wasn't lying when he promised Louis power to get one over on the racists he's forced to be around. He did give Louis the chance to *know* and not just suspect what they thought and the strength to punish them for it.

12:50 I think there is enough ambiguity to state that we don't really know if Lestat had anything to do with Paul's death. Did Lestat directly order Paul to kill himself? I don't think so. However, Lestat's telepathic conversation with Paul may have unhinged him, and Lestat's relationship with Louis may have unhinged him further. I think the real question is "how many conversations did Lestat have with Paul, and what was said in those conversations?"

One of the main things I love about this show is how flawed the characters are. It somehow reminds me of Hannibal (another favorite of mine). I get people loving and defending their favorite characters, I've been in fandom for so long, I'm used to it; but man, sometimes it gets annoying when people (not you, I mean in general hahahaha) can't just enjoy flawed characters. Just because you like Hannibal doesn't mean you're a cannibal. It's the same here, people want so desperately for their favorite to be a saint and the other ones their antagonists, that they ignore what makes them interesting in the first place. Yes, Lestat is terrible, but so is Louis and I wouldn't change a thing about these characters because it's... interesting to me. Also, them being like that gives their actors so much more to work with? Louis's conflict, the fact that he wants to be good but hey, at the beginning he was not running a church either, and he did things he wasn't happy about, all of that gave us that beautiful scene at the confessionary. Lestat and all his questionable behavior, how he thinks he's superior to others just because he's a vampire AND has been a vampire for so long he thinks he knows everything, gives us memorable scenes as well. I don't know, I think this show would be so boring and bland if they (the main characters) were all saints? But what makes it excellent is that they're not? I think that's precisely what elevates this show. Anyway, amazing reaction as usual and the glasses were so cool! I hope your eyes get better, though.

As some have mentioned, consider a moderator or finishing the series before posting anywhere. For some reason, this fanbase doesn't understand that thier hints and clues are absolutely spoilers. And they will try to "correct" your totally valid first impressions about characters/events if you don't immediately feel the way they do (which is spoiling!) These people don't realize that they can ruin the whole journey for reactors which makes it so much less fun for us. Sorry, I've been getting so frustrated reading some of these comments. I hope you're able to enjoy the rest of th journey as the show-writers intended.

I love, love, love your reactions. You're so intelligent about the nuances, and it helps me think about things I hadn't before. It's also amusing to watch your subtle shift between humanity and vampirism. I bet you'll get a kick out of your reactions some day if you ever go back and compare the old with the new. Firstly, please don't be apologetic about taking care of your eyes. If it's something you need to do, do it. That's your health. Secondly, like you mentioned, it probably would be a good idea to go back to the first episode to catch Lestat's dialogue with Paul when he was talking about the church. Your reactions are so good! I appreciate that you bring up the ever constant racial tension between lestat and louie. And also how you acknowledge that they are vampires and how their actions therefore dont fully apply to human morality. Im so excited to see your reaction to claudia's character :) Edit: oh and i love how you talk about how the audience could have so many different opinions of the moral dilemmas laid out in the show. I find that this is why the relationship between lestat and louie works so well. They are so perfect for eachother and yet so much can be said, even the things that makes them work, is what makes them poison!

I love seeing you love when Louis acts like a VAMPIRE! Cuz I love it too. We can have his existential crisis moments when he ponders who and what he is blah blah blah, and yes it is important and is one of the components that makes this show so interesting, BUT i do still wanna see Louis be a vampire and f some people up! I wanna see him give in to that side of him. He can be too much of a little goody two shoes sometimes, sometimes I just wanna see him embrace it and give us that good vampire content!

25:55 funny thing about your playing cards comparison is that that's exactly what lestat shows louis in ep1!! he plays his vampiric nature to his advantage to make louis win a game he otherwise wouldn't have won, against these men who look down on and belittle him. being a vampire, louis could easily tilt the game in his favour against these guys, but that would mean letting his vampiric instinct rule, which he (understanbly) doesn't want to do

Love how you picked up on the layers of the burning of Storyville. Louis felt guilty about it but like you and Lestat(!) said, Louis just provided them the match, it would have happened anyway. About the open relationship, the thing is Lestat's point is *not* the open relationship. If you went back, he ended his proposal about open relationship with "there I said it", the very same sentence Louis used when he said he wanted to stop eating humans. Lestat was trying to make Louis jealous enough he'd kill the woman because as we saw here, anger is one of Louis' biggest drives. Lestat knows that. And after Jonah/Louis happened, Lestat made a point about how Louis ate dogs and rats instead of following his instinct and drink from Jonah. I mean, yes Lestat would have been still jealous anyway (these two are soooo possessive about each other it's crazy), but he reacted this badly because Louis also denied himself on top of that. and yes, with these two, instead of communicating their problem wisely, they'll do the most unhinged things ever 😅

@@moderndaymedusa82 // SPOILER ALERT. DON'T READ TACO Imo, this is the only explanation that makes everything that will go down later make sense. Like, in 1x05, Lestat goes back to Antoinette because he feels alienated by Louis and Claudia and for his crazy mind, if Louis is allowed to own someone else (Claudia), he could have another person as well. This is emphasized by the show through Daniel when he says "but there are three of you" in 1x06 and the shot changes from Antoinette to Claudia. Antoinette only gets to live until she does because Louis never says he wants her dead himself. It's Claudia who demands it ("A child meddling in her parents' romance"). And Louis knows this as he says in the same episode after finding out Antoinette is still alive, but asking Lestat to kill her himself, for Louis, means surrendering to Lestat's game, and he already barely has power over Lestat at that time. And all of this is the basis to what Louis does with Armand in 2x08: he knows that, not only it kills Lestat to know he's with Armand, he and Lestat both know no one can replace Louis for Lestat. Disclaimer: I'm not blaming Louis or giving Lestat an excuse. I just want to point out how crazy his logic is

Spoiler Season 1 alert!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really don't believe in this, Lestast really likes Antoinette, he made her a Vampire, he trust her, he admired her talents, he care for her a long time. Also in the last episode we see that he had sexual relationship with one of those women, and as far as we know Louis didn't know about it, also he didn't kill her when whoud should be save to do. So he was not with her to make Louis angry. He really likes having relationship with other people, but he "don't like to share" either, despite he reasons with Louis, he also doesn't want to be trap in a single relationship.

Happy to see Black men reviewing the show. A lot of other reviewers have completely glossed over the racism of the timeframe and how Lestat essentially treated Louis like a pet. This show is Black AF and I am here for it. Thank you for providing historical context with redlining Jim Crow A lot of my favorite reviewers won’t review the show due to (insert ridiculous reason here).

Im black and I don’t see the white savior or “Pet” treatment at all. To me Lestat seems like he’s desperately in love and longing for Louis to reciprocate and be his companion/lover. He’s toxic, sure, but he’s the same way with the original white version of Louis. There was a moment he could’ve been a “white savior” when they asked him to be the face and front of Louis businesses, but he declined and said that’s Louis hobby, not his. Now, admittedly, there may be something I’m not seeing bc I would absolutely fall for Lestat 😅, toxicity and all, but please give me an example.

@@alinder2327... Yeah, I absolutely agree with this. Like yes Louis being black in the show creates a really interesting nuance and depth to their interactions, yes... But we do have to remember Lestat treated Louis in the EXACT SAME WAY when they were both white men... Even when Louis actually DID have more power than Lestat because Louis had money and Lestat didn't actually have any money, in the book. They've changed this in the show tho so that they kind of both have a decent amount of money... The show kind of evened out that power differential. But yeah so a lot of the behavior Lestat has towards Louis is really interesting and has more depth now that he's a black man but it's not necessarily SOLELY because of his race that he's being treated this way... Like there's some things that have been taken DIRECTLY from the books so it isn't solely because he is a black man that Lestat is treating him that way.... This is literally just how Lestat shows his love... And it's toxic in many ways because he has an EXTREMELY abusive unhealthy relationship with BOTH of his parents... he doesn't know HOW to properly show love in healthy way, IMO. So yeah it's a bit weird to see a bunch of reacters and commenters on here immediately jump to "Lestat is treating Louis this way BECAUSE he's black end of story"... And it's like no, Lestat treated white!Louis the SAME way 🤷‍♀️.... It actually isn't THAT connected to his race. Louis being black is a really interesting nuance to their dynamic and I'm REALLY glad the casting decided to go in that direction... But Lestat would be treating Louis in this exact way regardless of his race.

20:02 - I'm 100% with you, Lestat and Louis still haven't truly communicated clearly nor laid down any actual honest boundaries or relationship ground rules or anything for shite, and they really should. But, to be fair, it was pretty standard still for people to just assume that when they jumped into bed together or agreed to officially start a relationship together that all individuals involved were automatically on the same page even without specifically sitting down or talking it out and ironing those details out with each other even in the 1990s and early-early 2000s still (that's why DTR-ing became so much more a thing I think sometime in the 2010s to 2020s or so) ..ssooo, I guess it wouldn't be fair to expect two dumb ex-human beasties(vampires) in the early-early 1900s/1910s or so to have done it any better((especially when one of them is from the 1700s)). Lol

When you said "human adjacent" during their little fight, I thought about Lestat saying "...pull over and drain a dog, then run down an Alley way for 2 more rats, this is not a life!" I think the human adjacent example of that is being malnourished or getting bare minimum of food. Like, technically you can survive off it, but Lestat has expressed that he wanted Louis to thrive and enjoy his life as a vampire. So, I can understand why Lestat would be frustrated by Louis' chosen diet, especially since Louis himself said that his energy had decreased. In short, I can understand that side of Lestat's argument completely

Then again, there's a fine line sometimes between thriving and living in complete excess. Different individuals thrive or derive joy from different things / diets or portions, and different individuals tend to have different dietary needs/sustenance demands based on their own individual body's needs and/or the demands of their own personal lifestyle or such. While I can understand Lestat wanting Louis to thrive, I can not get behind Lesat thinking that Lestat can decide for anyone other than Lestat what does or doesn't sufficiently equal thriving; much like I can appreciate Lestat telling Louis to be all the things Louis is and be so without apology, but I can't get behind Lestat having tantrums any time the things that Louis actually is or would personally like to be do not align perfectly exactly with the things that Lestat personally wants Louis to be or thinks that Louis should be as if Lestat alone gets to decide what is or isn't best and would/wouldn't be better for Louis without any input on how that is or isn't decided and why/why-not from Louis' own self rather than just from Lestat only-it reminds me too much of my mother trying to force me to eat less pig meat and eat more salmon and more white meat chicken when I was growing up because "it's healthier" even though it turns out I'm actually kind of allergic to both salmon and to white meat chicken so it was really very much not healthy for me at all, or trying to make me wear more pink even though I don't personally much like most pink because well "but it looks so good on [me]". Lestat and Louis are struggling so much I think because they both had completely different expectations than each other and are both pitching fits because their actual reality together didn't fit either one of their expectations actually. -__,‐ It's really sad and tragic.

The way Lestat goes about his feeling is fucked! He is honest about it in a way that makes sense only to him but yeah it doesnt mean its not fucked or that we should be ok with it but on the other hand it be really boring to watch these vampires to be completly mentally stable from the get go when before being turned they all went through some shit So for me personally i enjoy seeing them letting their perspectives of life and the way they make sense of it take over and what the consequences are

100% agree..I have to enjoy them for where they are currently..I'll criticize but that never takes away from my enjoyment of the show...would feel like a disservice to all the hard work everyone is putting into their portrayal of characters to just write them off..or not give them attention

I dunno, I think it's kinda sad how people always say "it would be boring if they were being mentally stable and communicating healthily and clearly"....I mean, don't get me wrong, I enjoy the mess in fiction like this probably more than a lot of people; but I don't think believing that it's can't be just as interesting or find ways to keep things interesting through external rather than internal conflict or such is a particular good way of looking at anything. This is how people get into problematic situationships in reality, because they aren't satisfied with stability and such and always go out unhealthily seeking that bigger better "more exciting" 'thrill' or whatever.😅 We really need to be careful with how much we do or don't subscribe to that philosophy sometimes I think. Buut maybe that's just me. 🤷 🙂

I love the way use comics and other characters to put some of these scenes into perspective (I love Two Face/ Batman)! Seriously some of the best insight I’ve heard in reaction videos. To be fair..... we only have Louis' word that Lestat claimed to have had nothing to do with Paul's death. Technically, you're still allowed to speculate that secretly he did or may have for as long as you like, pretty much no matter what any of the characters say or claim that any of the other characters said. And, to a point, it also depends on exactly how much you do or do not subscribe to the philosophy of the metaphorical "death of the author" or what-have-you(where you believe that essentially the creator's intentions don't matter once the creation is out in the public world it now belongs to audiences and audiences can bring pretty much whatever they like into it even beyond the author's intentions) and/or how much you subscribe to the text itself being literal law or such as far as not going beyond whatever is or isn't actually stated on page(so if it says it, you accept it as truth; and if it doesn't explicitly say it, then you disregard it as irrelevant or untrue - or whatever). Loll

I'm eating up your reactions! You and I are very much on the same page with enjoying the gray morality of the characters, the rich fodder for discussion and interpretation, the way you can approach this show from so many different areas of interest (horror, race relations, gay romance, psychology, etc.) and get a satisfying meal out of it. Not feeling the need to vilify one of the characters in order to enjoy the other puts you head and shoulders above a lot of other reactors imo. I'm a new sub. If you don't already have moderators maybe you should get some. People are gonna spoil intentionally and unintentionally. It's just the nature of these reactions. The only time I've really seen a series commenters go out of their way to NOT intentionally spoil things was for Game of Thrones, which is pretty impressive. That show was massive...still is and has a huge reactor community. But to be honest, I don't know the process for you guys to get moderators so maybe it's a thing ;)

love your take on this show and how you observe and appreciate all the nuances without really rushing to judgement you’re really letting the tale seduce you and that’s a rarity in this fandom lol and I agree on Louis killing the alderman and the consequences of that even if they hadn’t burned the town down they would have continued to kill it slowly in other ways regardless of Louis’ actions, so I say let him have his moment of triumph and put at least one monster out of commission

It is soooo good how they took how Louis is selective about his vampire nature & where he chooses to use violence & how that ties into him being an unreliable narrator (not only to us but to himself). The way he will tear himself apart with his crisis over feeding himself, but doesn't even hesitate to go with his impulse to kill those who wrong him. This is something I feel is canon to his character even in the books. But then they added the aspect of racism and now his selectiveness is justifiable and causes even more of a conundrum. BEST SHOW ON TV.

The millions of layers and nuance that they added to this story by not only making Louis & Lestat explicitly in a sexual and romantic relationship, but making Louis a Black man, needs to be studied in literature and sociology classes. An absolute masterclass.

Something that I LOVE about Louis is that he's 100% a hypocrite. Of course him killing the Alderman is a great example of this (claiming he doesn't like to torture or humiliate people but delighting in doing those exact same things to someone that he thinks deserve it (I do agree with him, fuck that guy, but it is hypocritical)) but Louis being annoyed that Lestat didn't kill and burn Antoinette (9:45) is my favorite example of this. He spends the first part of the episode talking about how humans don't deserve to die horribly for no reason but he WANTED Lestat to kill her. I love Louis when he's being "evil" or hypocritical, it gives him dimension and his cruelty makes him even more loveable in my opinion. (Also you being so excited about Louis killing the Alderman is EXACTLY how i felt lol. I was just screaming at my TV asking Louis to kill him 😂)

And while I'm white so I can't speak on the experience that black viewers have, but as someone in other minority groups, it was so fucking cathartic to see someone not take abuse. I love how this show didn't sweep racism or homophobia under the rug, and they even had the characters have violent revenge! I am so sick and tired of seeing minority characters be the bigger people, sometimes I just want to see someone do some fucked up shit! Jacob Anderson was right when he said that he wished that more queer and black characters were allowed to be evil! And this ties back into my first comment because Louis being a hypocrite and an unreliable narrator and yes, sometimes "evil" is so great to see. This show not only has a black gay main character, but it lets him be fucked up.

Sorry for three comments but I think your comments nearer the end were good too. I should have just waited to comment until then. Louis could have not displayed the body and triggered this particular riot but also it really isn't his fault, white people do this, especially then, and Lestat tried to tell him that in Lestat's own way and I think when he (rather cruelly) told Lestat that Lestat will always be alone, Louis was rejecting a real things at once: a relationship with Lestat in which Louis embraces him vampirism but also, Louis rejects accepting he isn't really responsible. I think he wants to punish himself for the excess, for the murder, for the vampirism. People also often take responsibility for awful things they haven't done because they want to feel in control and I wonder if that plays into it here.

Sorry for the spoilerish comments before! 😅 Lestat wanted to make Louis "eat" properly, so Antoinette is more a provocation than he wanting an open relationship for real. He expected Louis' anger or lust to tip him towards giving into his instincts and feeding properly. And Louis was struggling with accepting his new reality, still trying to keep himself his old moralities. Sometimes it does sound like he is trying to be higher-then-thou. And they DO NOT know how to communicate! 😅😅😅

As far as their relationship goes, that is one thing I wish they would have kept book accurate. Vampires in Anne's world dont care about relationships with humans. They do them for fun. Even Louis isnt worried about them. It only becomes a problem when another Vampire is involved (which you have found this out now, since you have seen the next episodes already..).... So even though it has seemed to stay in line with the book, the whole Antoinette thing just made it weird. Idk... Im still pondering the "why".... Hmmmmmmmmm. Now that I think about it... I know why... I'll leave my comment at that and will expand more on the next one. 🤗
