What mental strategies do you use to help get through the low periods of a long run or race?

Hey Cjaye, really enjoying your content 👍🏻 My big strategy lately is David Goggins 40% rule. It’s very similar to your technique of the mind will fail before the body

I like to think about how grateful I am for what my body allows me to do. I think about all of those who have lost the capability to run, and remind myself how they would do just about anything to feel the pain that I am feeling right now. This usually kicks my butt into gear and helps me power out the rest of the run!

Alex Im That’s a great one! When I use to coach for Team in Training we always had a cancer patient that was our team hero and that’s one of the things we would talk about. We are blessed to be able to do this because so many others can’t and are going through so much worse.

Listening to music (high energy, high bpm, etc) got me through the last 15 miles of my first 50 miler. High bpm music is also good for improving cadence. Occasionally I listen to ultra running podcasts (for example, tenjunkmiles, etc) during long runs.

THANKS CJAYYE MEDIA FOR SHARING THE REAL INSIDE STORY SUMMARY: 1). COUNT THE STEPS TO DIVERT YOUR MIND FROM THE PAIN. 2). WHEN TIRED...COUNT 25 STEPS OF WALK AND 100 STEPS OF RUN 3). WHEN BRAIN ASKS TO QUIT USE SELF TALK 4). USE MANTRAS TO BOOST THE POWER (SAME AS FIRST POINT).

Thanks for the counting tips. I tried it this morning and the counting worked great for me to get my mind off the pain. Was able to get 9 miles in early this morning. Appreciate it!

On long swims in the lake/ocean I use the alphabet as a base for a chosen subject to keep my mind engaged on something else ie; Cars, A = Audi, B= BMW etc. By the time you get to Z you have eaten up the distance and forgotten all about how far you have to go or what current niggle is affecting you. Keep up the great work, we love you down here in NZ!

I haven't tried the counting tips, thats something i will definitely try! what I usualy do when it really starts to hurt is tell myself. just 3 more steps and if I can proof to myself that i can take those 3 more steps than I will add another 3. I believe its called chunking. where you split a big task in multiple smaller tasks to trick your brain into thinking its not that big. anyway great video again! :)

I usually focus on speed. In long runs I try to stay in aerobic mode. Heart rate below 130. That really helps to get in a good flow.

Nice Lauren Alaina reference!! I count steps when running hills. I have a few mantras as well, depending on the type of run. And occasionally (and I am not making this up) I pretend that things or people that I see on my run are trying to kill me and I try to look around and figure out what I would do if they actually were. It's strange, but it makes the time fly by. And now I have about 80 ways to evade hitmen.

Love mantras. I use them on step one of mile one. I use mantras that apply to life more so than just specifically running. I have noticed over the years that these definitely pay dividends with better mindset, increased gratitude (if you are working on that), and a better sense of well being. Lets face it, you are spending hours running. It is fine tuning your body. Why not fine tune your mind in the process? When I run past 20 miles, it is all "between the ears" anyway. Your mind will quit LONG before your body does. Train the mind!!

Thank you for this great video. I ran my longest run of 20 miles yesterday in preparation for my first marathon. If we’re going out for the run I went on RU-vid to search for some inspiration. After mile 11 my headphones ran out of battery and your advice to count steps was very very helpful in getting me through the miles. I also used the interval technique, not exactly like you said of 25 and 100, but in the upper miles walking up the hills and running down… previously when I tried to walk/ run technique I couldn’t get running again but after watching your video some thing changed and I was able to do the walk run which really help me in the upper miles. I also used my favorite mantra “I love you thank you”.

I do a couple of things. So I was in the army, I hated running. I started back running maybe 6 years after I got out. I was peaking, I’d call cadence in my head when I was running. Fast forward to the pandemic shutdown, I slowed down a lot. Started trying to pick it back up, I couldn’t get out of my head. I switched my wearable from the Apple Watch to the Garmin epix pro 2. It helped me because I didn’t realize that I needed to slow down. But my playlist is the 80’s workout music. I’ve been picking it back up more consistently.

I'm not a great runner so a long run for me at the moment is about 10 k's but something I find helpful is to count how many kilometres I still have to run instead of how many I've already done i.e. count down instead of up. Somehow, telling myself I have three k's to go is less daunting than acknowledging I've already run seven.

Do you have any advise or comment on someone who long runs seem to be more of a challenge and a struggle on the first 10-12k of a 23-25k long run and easier and somehow more manageable in the last 12k. Am I the other way around or what? Anyone with the same experience? It could be I am in the zone but it would be great to feel the same in the first half too....any thoughts?

Re: Counting - I remember how my two year old learned the say the alphabet - I will say the alphabet to myself. Re: Quitting - The only time my mind tells me to quit is when my legs start burning OR my heart feels like its about to pop out of my chest. But one thing that really helps me ... I imagine the Finish line and how the race will be over and I can lie down on the grass and rest - with no regrets, knowing that I did my best, no thoughts of, "I should have done this at mile ??" Thank You :)
