I just love how random he is. Playing bass, drinking beer, and wearing a cool, random shirt. It just really shows who he is as a person not just as a coach.

It's about self control, learning to push yourself outside of the comfort zone, and focus. Meditate, take cold showers etc. When you push yourself out of your comfort zone in everyday life, it transfers to running, and vice versa.

Thanks for this vid, Sage! Watched it last night and took 5+ minutes off my PR on a local 10 mile loop. Kept, "this is going to suck" in my head and kept pushing. I appreciate the vids!

The way I stay motivated to run is to: remove all competing motivations. So for example, I run during my break at work. why?? Because, I have nothing else motivating me to do something else, aka, I have nothing else to do. Running on my break is the most desirable option of the options to choose from. Just look at prisoners, they have nothing else to do beside workout. Sure, there's other motivating factors like trying to impress others ect. But if they all had WiFi it might be a different story. So the moral of the story is to be sent to prison and come out qualified for Boston. But seriously a lack of a options really makes remaining options more 'enticing'

Great talk Sage! Something I do to prepare for my ultras are positive splits. I run a 16 mile loop trail from time to time. I'll push hard on the first half of the work out (first loop or couple loops) to try and exhaust myself then push through on the second half of the workout. This helps me cause it simulates what I feel late in a race. Trains my body and my mind to deal with certain pains and thoughts.

I love Kayla's story - it's inspiring to say the least. Unfortunately, I know to a degree what she is going through - I crushed a disc in my lumbar while power-lifting and have now had 10 spinal surgeries and nerve damage that effects my legs and feet. Pain has to become your friend and you have to learn to embrace it rather than fear it. I have learned to do this and now when I reach those painful minutes in a race/workout, I just smile and dig deeper. I think this is what is meant by "what want kill you, will make you stronger!". I love your channel and get a lot out of all the "Sage" advice. Keep up the great work and run strong.

After just watching your post-race interview with Bryon Powell, you were the awesome example of digging out of a mental hole at TNF50! Awesome job! You've got to be one of the most humble pro athletes out there, but your CR's and PR's in your training show how much work you put in.

Nice shout out to Kayla. One of the things I think about each time I run, is a friend with MS. I give my utmost heartfelt respect to anyone who deals with that deck of cards. Great video, Sage. And best of luck on the 6th, I'll will be rooting for you!

great video, you litterally spoke my mind! i use exactly the same techniques. But if i ever want to hit that runners high, I feel i usually have to inspire myself with something greater tha just myself. I usually think of pushing on for mankind, and what a human can really be capapble of, or leaving a legacy for others to follow and improve on. Really diggin the video, this kind of stuff is real good, helps deepen my existing beliefs.

Could you talk about training in the heat? I live in FL, and I had to train through the "horrors" of 5AM long runs at 82 degrees and 95% humidity during the summer while training for the Chicago Marathon. Since I mostly trained by HR, my paces were extremely slower and I couldn't train my tempo runs at marathon pace because it was so hot/humid that the pace itself became more like a 10K pace (or at least thats what it felt like). Would you adjust your paces depending on your HR, or would you ditch the HR and continue to do your workouts at your prescribed paces? How do you go from training 40-60 seconds slower than your marathon race pace to actually racing at that pace when the race comes around (Chicago was 45 and 70% humidity)? Thanks a ton, Sage!

Trust me, it's not just in FL. We all feel the heat during summer time everywhere else. From my experience, all the training in the heat pays off later in Septembre and specially in October. You're gonna find yourself running faster without trying too hard, which is perfect for a fall marathon. However, you better watch out for the windy season that starts at the end of October, which I think is worst than summer time.

Haha, I always get the "I want to give up" feeling, even with something short like 400m repeats. I actually expect to feel this way now, otherwise I start thinking I probably didn't push as hard as I could've! Also, such an inspiring story. Just saw the video about her!
