About a week and half ago I had an Aurum Vale run and was thinking of you as I got a Gladiator (not even paladin, though they had it unlocked) as my tank. I was so grateful I wasn't healing that run (I was RDM), as they took no advice and never spoke. The tank died every boss, and me and the reaper were the tanks half the time. The tank walked into the final room and ate half the fruit before the pull before dying. I sought out that healer after and gave them some hot cocoa for getting through that...

I remember when I started mentoring, I was like you-wanting to help people and trying to tell them that what they were doing wasn't correct and that they'd do better doing something else. I gave up after doing 2,000 roulettes in 6 weeks. I realized that I both didn't want to be a mentor anymore and that the playerbase, in general, was so poor that it wasn't worth the time or effort to teach them. Don't get me wrong, I had touching moments, like spending 2 hours explaining how to heal to a random sprout on a different server simply because they asked. I also had a Sephirot run where I got kicked for being "toxic" because I said that we shouldn't expect to clear but still should try our best. Being a mentor was by far the most toxic experience I ever had in the game. I saw the absolute worst of the playerbase, and it rubbed off on me. It has been a year since I did it, and I still feel the residual effects of having people so hostile to improvement that I don't talk in the game anymore.
I really like the small tips you sometimes add to the runs you show. Like, for example, the boss positioning in great gubal hard for better melee uptime. I always try to find these kinds of optimisations to help a run go smoother, so the insight is so great to learn from you.
to anyone reading this, dont be afraid to vote kick problematic people or those that tell others to worry about themselves. doing that will hopefully make them realize maybe they are the problem

As for sprouts who don't respond, I had a bad habit of not checking chat when I was new to the game. Sometimes after the dungeon was over and I had left I'd notice someone had said something. I made it so party chat makes a noise so I knew someone said something.
i dont blame that healer for dipping from stone vigil i will always stand by that being the worst arr dungeon, because its at that awkward level where everything hits harder but you dont even have your full lvl 50 kit (not even aoe!) so all you can do is spam gcds
I finally got mentor for the first time like 2 days ago from writing this comment. I still have a lot of side-content I need to complete before I can do the roulette. I know it’s not a great time with dawntrail around the corner but I always liked the idea of being able to help people. I know I can do it without the crown and I have helped plenty of people before. But there’s some interesting feeling when my group doesn’t understand the final boss of haukke manor (hard) until I say something, only to get it done first time after that while wearing that funny crown
NGL, that Samurai rotation looks like one of my bro's rotations. Thankfully, he had at least the decency to admit that he sucks, and that 'gitting gud' was not why he plays this game. Edit: Also gotta love those pet peeve single target dotons, especially as the lone ninja player in our FC. It is constant proof the game does not do a good job explaining how dots work. Though tbf, it took me forever to learn that hide resets your mudra. XD
Man, that story of having to deal with a player queuing for an Extreme just pushing random buttons fills me with sympathetic pain. As annoying as it is to see it in regular content, you can mostly get away with it as long as everyone else is doing a good job. In extremes or above though, there's no excuse, you really need to have learned how your job works. Also I see what you did there. FORESHADOWING IS A LITERARY DEVICE IN WHI- I have my own "Light Party of Theseus" story. Not that long ago I queued for a leveling roulette, and entered an in-progress run of Doma Castle. The only original member there was I think the healer, and they left as soon as I joined. Shortly after I joined, a new DPS joined, followed by a new tank and then a new healer at the end. The original party had in fact defeated the first boss, and I still have no idea what happened to them. It was also funny that I explained to all three new party members, as they joined, and when they asked what happened when they also joined an in progress party: "I have no idea! None of the original party is here, I only caught a glimpse of the original healer as I joined in before they left, and they didn't say anything!" Easily the strangest dungeon run I've ever had.
I remember one time queueing into P2N and essentially trying to hand-hold the entire team after the third wipe. It was a while ago so I don't remember what mechs we were wiping on, but: it was a cycle of one of the party instant pulling despite not knowing what to do, me having to go overtime on chat explaining mechs, the party not doing said mechs, and then we wipe within 3 mins. I don't recall any mentors beside myself. After the party disbanded, I requeued into P2N and saw like 3 or 4 people from the failed run with me. We cleared on the first pull.
Even good tanks can be annoying these days... 3 out of 4 times tanks move away from my doton. It annoys me like no other. That's why i mainly run dungeons as a healer.
probably got a lot of level 60 dungeons because a lot of people are picking up relics with the event, and the shadowbringers relic has a step that lvl 60 dungeons is an option for it
The only time I managed to calmly resolve a single target doton ninja was praetorium in shb when I was also playing ninja, glad there was a time it worked out here.
As a sprout who's wanting to learn and do their best in duties, gotta say I love this series! (even if I skip like half of the video to not get spoiled on stuff i haven't seen 😅) Also, how did make the cross-hotbar layouts appear when using keyboard and mouse? 12:45 Sometimes, Mentor Roulette is a revolving door. 21:00 Considering you get to this dungeon by boat, it feels oddly fitting. 24:05 I generally REALLY like Spriggans... this one is the exception. So I recently decided to activate my Mentor status (though deactivated the Crown) if only to see how long the list of duties I would need to unlock Mentor Roulette... It was long enough that I'll probably deactivate the Mentor status due to not feeling like I know enough about the game to teach people much in the small amount of time remaining before Dawntrail.

I ran Sastasha the other day, (of note : I have never played mmo's prior to playing ffxiv) I have only been playing a little over 2 yrs now. Anyways, the healer only used Cure. I did not see them use any Stone prior to the final boss and then only like twice, didn't use Esuna on the tank when they needed it. The tank did not AOE until the final fight before the boss. The joys and struggles of duty finder.
Sprouts who want advice are out there, I had one ask me if I was on novice network at the end of a duty so they could ask me stuff later, and I'm not even a mentor (or returner to otherwise access the network chat).
My worse sprout would be a flare mage , pretty self explanatory just flares for anything , it wouldnt be much of a problem if it wasnt the only one i met on top of the fire 3 mages :'D
Last week i got Shinryu ex on mentor roulette with 3 sprouts, of course it was the 1 time i que as a dps.. We had a godlike healer and a surprisingly good sprout tank, each pull we got to 15ish % further, cleared it in the end. Sometimes ex mentor roulette is fun i guess😅
That Samurai rotation hurt my soul... Also, I'm pretty sure you can't Dual Cast VerFire to begin with? Because you can't double-stack VerFire Ready procs?
12:00 Huh, funny thing, that Stone Vigil. I queued for leveling roulette and got a one min in progress. When I joined in it was just me and the other DPS, a sprout. Apparently the other three people saw Stone Vigil and immediately nope'd out. I was so confused, and still am. Just why? It's not even the hard one.

I actually think Stone Vigil (Hard) is easier than normal... you can even cheese the turtle by having the tank use Provoke on it so it'll never attack the Knights.
Just as a preface, I haven’t been playing the game that long, and I’m only on Free Trial content. It’s interesting to me that I’ve done quite a few more extreme trials than my friends (still not as many as the average dedicated EXer or mentor ofc), yet I’ve been much more lucky with my parties. I haven’t had a single fail or abandon (though I get a ton of shitty people in normal content aha). The closest I’ve gotten was being kicked from Shiva EX as a healer because I DC’d for less than 5 minutes even though my friends advocated for me being able to get back in quickly. Literally moments before the game loaded, I was out of the party. This was like, not the busiest time. Not many people were playing, to the point that I seriously doubted they’d get a new member. It was already a miracle that we got into the EX in the first place, and the other members openly admitted this. I ended up helping my friends (they were the two tanks) over VC since I was the most familiar with the duty and could call out moves when needed. That party failed probably more times than I ever have on a single duty (or at least more spectacularly in more instances) and they never got a replacement healer. I would argue that I was also the better of the two healers, but it could just be that I was recognising all the problems of other people and not focusing on myself. Other than that, I think I’ve never had a failed EX, all completed in 4 or less tries (usually 2), which I’m told by my friends is genuinely surprising when you consider how many healers (they are usually the big problem for me) in normal content I’ve had to tear my hair out for just to try and get a Cure II, half-decent MP management, regen, damage, and situational awareness. It’s interesting though that pretty much every single genuinely bad healer (either in attitude or gameplay) that I’ve had has been limited to WHM, so I can immediately relax if an AST, SCH, or SGE is in party. The worst of others I’ve seen is pretty much just being a touch greedy on DPS and not being as quick to revive or Esuna dangerous status effects as would be preferred. Unfortunately, both the absolute worst and best healers I’ve dealt with were mainly mentors. Once had a battle mentor (PLD main) in Wanderer’s Palace Hard content play as WHM. I was the tank who suffered the most from this damn player. They used only Cure I, Cure III, and Medica II the whole time… and they had been using ONLY Cure I UNTIL I asked them to use literally anything else (but named Regen and Cure II). Usually I get WHMs argue that they are using Cure I for MP reasons (which is a bizarre problem to complain about when they sometimes actively use Lucid Dreaming on CD and not when needed???) but someone willing to use Cure III clearly doesn’t believe that MP exists if the tank is the only person taking damage… This caused multiple deaths. I will admit, I was being a little silly and mean to the DPSes by continuing to pull harder than what could be handled, but dammit, I felt petty and didn’t feel kind enough to enable such lame behaviour. … Besides, it was a perfect opportunity to get more LD practice in XD Anyway, point is that I personally have had very positive EX runs and will continue being happy about it lmao
16:00 okay this is gonna be a small rant because it's so triggering but WHY DO TANKS DO THIS!??? I hate it, I hate it so much and I hate you. If all the mobs that are possible in a pull are already grouped up, why do you have to take them all the way to the wall?? That isn't what wall to wall means. Just aoe them right then and there. You save no time doing it because the time spent taking them to the wall is the same time that would be spent using aoe instead of walking, there is 0 time saved. Please stop tanking if you do this. i have sprint right now, im gonna sprint until im stopped or it wears off. we kill the mobs, it takes about 35 or 40 seconds, and hey look, now my sprint is back up to continue running! i couldve stopped right where the mobs were, but then thats 5 seconds of sprint where im not sprinting, and probably 5 seconds of walking before sprint comes off cooldown, and a small distance that i have to walk without sprint. or maybe im just gonna hold sprint until the next pack. the reality is, context matters. why are they doing what theyre doing? they might have had a big brain idea that fell short, or maybe theyre just new to this duty and dont know when the wall is. but telling them to stop tanking entirely is absolutely stupid. why dont YOU tank if it bothers you so much? the tank cant be bad in dungeons if YOU ARE THE TANK. well, i guess the tank could still be bad, but you wouldnt ever admit to that, would you?

I haven't been super active in the later half of Endwalker but ever since the change to alliance roulette I have almost never gotten any ARR or even HW alliance. I used to be in favor of the change but the amount of long runs is starting to bother me and I often just skip the roulette completely...
Honestly, I haven't seen the ENTIRE series but I'll be honest, just from this thing alone, I feel like the way you come across when you give advice to these newbies is condescending. For example at 6:07 rather than plainly telling the dragoon to use Doom Spike when we're doing dungeon pulls, you kinda snidely comment that dragoon's aoe is strong and he "should try it". I don't think that approach is going to go over well with a lot of people, especially not newer players. That person MIGHT have responded better if you told it to them the way I outlined first, its not a guarantee but it is probably more likely to be the case.
I got a completely different vibe from that, tbh. For me, it's just explaining the why along with the how, which is how I like to learn as well. If I know why I must do something, then I'm more likely to remember to do it. It's one of the reasons I like watching Wesk's rotation videos, since they explain everything so clearly. If you just said "please use AoE", I'd take that as a condescending remark.

If you just say "drg please use your aoe" that's even worse, and yes, I personally would take it a different way if I was not using my aoE and Wesk told me "DRG has powerful AoE, should try it". I'd laugh and then actually start using my AoE. However, I do also realize that a lot of people might not see it that way, either. My comment was more so a bit of advice from one mentor to another on how one can increase the probability their advice lands, not necessarily saying that Wesk is a bad mentor. I'm sure he's a very good mentor! His PLD guide helped me out a lot as did the DRG guide.
@@WeskAlber I mean yeah it is genuinely a hard thing to try and actually do the thing you signed up for as a mentor. I feel you on that. I just try to cushion it, I guess is the word? the best I can so that that person is more likely to listen and actually do the thing you're telling them to do because like, in my short time as a mentor, I've met some pretty prickly people when I try to give them advice when they are labeled a sprout, and even to people who aren't sprouts but are still doing things incorrectly. Explaining why they should AoE (it's very strong) WAS cushioning it. Every option of how to phrase it is a wrong phrasing. If players want the advice, they will take it no matter how it is phrased. This is also going to be a topic I go over again when the series returns in DT.
