This video shows how to refurbish the steering rack and mechanism on your Mercedes 107 SL. The video shows all the part numbers you will need and the costs. There is also a short rant on how to correctly install split pins.
Given the extensive restoration you have already done to most of the car, you should consider removing the engine now and doing a full aesthetic restoration of the engine, engine bay, transmission, etc. Having remove the front sub-frame, you have already done most of the work. The dirty oil sump and engine block will be in strong contrast with everything else. Great work and keep those videos coming!
Thanks for your comments and you are probably right. I remember taking my Pagoda to get a quote to get some some dents removed and some paint touched up and the guy just said No. He mentioned that he had worked in Classic Car restoration for years and that once you did that little bit, it would highlight the rest of the imperfections.... That is certainly proving to be the case with this 280 SL. I don't think I'll do an engine out on this car just yet...although I have attended to the rusty oil pan! In the back of my mind, I am still thinking of pulling the Red 450SL out of the field, striping it down completely, dipping it and starting the long path of learning how to weld. It will never make sense financially, but maybe there are people out there who would be interested in such a project.
@@MikesMercsandothercars Absolutely, this has little to do with financial sense and all with our passion and the will to create - without it we wouldn't have left the caves.
Hi Bob - thanks for your comment. Never used miracle paint before but heard Kent B mention it. If I can get it in the UK, I’ll give it a try on the next SL project. Mike
Can you provide links to JD Motor Sports and Car Doctor UK? I am having trouble finding them on the WWW. Thank you Mike and keep up the good work. We 107 owners appreciate it greatly.
JD Motor Sport website is: ricerocketuk.com/ JD Motor Sport ebay shop is: www.ebaystores.co.uk/RiceRocketUk Doctor Car Parts ebay shop is: www.ebaystores.co.uk/Doctor-Car-Parts The JD Motorsport site has been an excellent source of cheap Febi SL parts - great customer service and fast delivery. Mike
@MikesMercsandothercars I bought a cheap harbor freight cabinet and stripped the garbage out of it, then did the bottom feed mod and used scat gun with cyclone dust extraction. It can clean anything upto 30 inches long and 20 inches high., maybe 15inches deep. It helps if you have an 80 gallon compressor for air flow.
@@RAYROTHSTEIN66 That sounds great. I have since discovered a local sand blasting/powder coating company but having the facility to strip rust in my garage would be great. Mike
Yep - totally agree. One of the reasons I do these videos, is to help other people understand what parts they need...and what parts can be replaced by non OEM. Now I know what the OEM merc non grease looks and acts like....Mike
Is it required to remove the tie rod first in order to remove the idler arm bolt and bushings? I think this job can be done without removing the tie rod? Lastly, what is the torque spec for the idler bolt when installing the new bushings? Thank you.
Thanks for your comment - do you mean the bolt and bushings shown at 13.58 in the video below: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yf5bYgY5y5E.html&lc=UgyU82gfkmJei-BPx1B4AaABAg You might find the answer to the torque spec question at the link below: www.benzworld.org/attachments/front-end-torque-values-jpg.177738/ Mike
@@MikesMercsandothercars . Yes, correct at 13:58. If I need to replace the Idler bolt and bushings, do i need to first remove the tie rod? Can this job be done without removing the tie rod? I’m asking because I’m about to replace the bushings. 35nm torque. Got it. Thank you!
Videos are excellent - do you carry work out classic mercedes? I’m looking for someone to do some work on my classic Merc 1982. North west of England based. Happy to have the car delivered to you.
Thank you for your comments. What car do you have and what work do you need doing - I'm sure there must be some good people in that neck of the woods. Unfortunately, it is not something I could undertake. Mike
Thank you Mike. I have a w123ce 280ce - wanted some work on the engine, electric windows not working, fuel system at the back needs a little attention small leak and just a few bits and bobs. It only has 67k on the clock and ive had lots of work done - inc a full respray. The car is looking great. Not far but just need someone with a special touch. It would of been nice seeing videos on w123 especially the coupes as they are becoming a rare and worthwhile investment as they were built to last. Happy for you to use my car in any videos and I’ll pay for your services! LOL worth a try. Many thanks and do keep up the hard work and excellent videos - they truly are one of the best on RU-vid very detailed and concise. Do you know where the best place to get a rear w123 ce corner piece bumper from (passenger) I am struggling been all over. Thanks
