In this video I restore the wood trim on the right hand corner of the dash
on our 300SD. This corner piece can be a challenge as the number of parts is greater than the others due to the 90 degree corner. Over the years the wood veneer trim on these cars starts to delaminate. It can be repaired with patience.
Errors:
After uploading the video I noticed that I had not fully inserted the AC vent into the duct, which has since been corrected.

Amazing job... very labor intensive, but the w126 was one of the last "forever cars" that MB made, so definitely worth doing. Please share the brand and stain you used to match the original so perfectly!

Thanks! I use Minwax redmahagony or dark walnut. Which ever works for the piece. Test some scrap wood first.

Minwax high gloss polyurethane is the clear coat. Brush it on. It you've never dine this, pratice on scrap wood.

I need to do this piece as well. The aluminum separated from the backing, cleanly, and the underside still looks good, but a piece of the zebrano is missing, so I'll probably just end up going to pick n pull every time they get a 300 in lol. At least I can do the center console, the varnish just flaked off but the wood is good. And there's a bunch of other little trim pieces that just need corners glued back down but otherwise look nice still. I was trying to find an answer to what color varnish would match good, should have known to just check here first lol. All these videos should definitely be archived, most helpful guides for us non-professional folk who just tinker on the weekends and wanna make these old cars shine like they should. Appreciate ya as always!

1st could have tried to call around to junk yards to find good pieces or on line vendors or Ebay. The original glue has a life span. Your video is a interesting option .

True but I have like $25 bucks in the restoration of these pieces and they remain original to the car. That is what I was shooting for.

@@ImpalamansGarage ...and your restoration will last another 25 yrs. Any originals--no matter how good the condition--are already compromised and will very likely suffer the same fate within just a few years of purchase... and they are never cheap to purchase!

No hay traduccion por el creador, hay una opción de CC en la esquina inferior derecha, pero es una traducción automática, así que es bastante mala.

Can epoxy be used instead of polyurethane? Is Epoxy more durable?
@ImpalamansGarage
@ImpalamansGarage 3 года назад
I use epoxy to adhere the layers together because there are different materials. (wood to metal) I use high gloss polyurethane to top coat the outer layer of wood veneer because it is inexpensive, easy to use and durable.

Why didn't you go with the burled walnut when you changed it out. Why stick with zebrano

as a w126 owner I changed out my wood on my 300 SDL and 300SEL when I later purchased an ultra rare 500SEL with the 4 place seating option I just had the wood touched up however I did add trim pieces from performance products before they went bust and no longer supplied the w126 platform im currently working on my 500 SEC swapping out my walnut for chestnut wood however parts are on back order. Also giving it the AMG treatment with wheels and bodywork

This was so hard to follow. To begin with he completely removed the veneer but didnt show how he removed the original coating.
@ImpalamansGarage
@ImpalamansGarage 3 года назад
Would be happy to answer any questions. I did not remove the color coating of the original wood veneer completely. I did sand off the original shiny coat of laquer but I did not sand all the way through the coloring. I left it intact. I simply touched it up with additional stain and then applied a top coat of poly. I have a couple of other wood trim videos like this one. Recommend checking them out too because there is more info on top coating. This piece was basically broken in half and I spent much of my time figuring out how to reassemble it properly.
@smokinchisel2918
@smokinchisel2918 3 года назад
What color stain do you use?
@ImpalamansGarage
@ImpalamansGarage 3 года назад
Keep in mind that I did not sand all of the old stain off. I applied a thin coat of red mahaganey by Minwax over the top of what was left of the old stain. It seemed to match the old stuff really well.

@@ImpalamansGarage I had a gentleman bring me the piece from around the shifter to refinish out of a 1983 300SL. I got the clear off and the Zebra wood underneath was good and clear so the color seemed to be in the finish and the veneer not stained. He brought me the ashtray to help with matching. If I just clear it, it won't match and I'm having a hard time matching the color it was. The clear actually, for the most part, chipped off.
@ImpalamansGarage
@ImpalamansGarage 3 года назад
@@smokinchisel2918 Understood. You'll just have to mix some stains and see if you can find one that works. I've used dark walnut and red mahogany. Of course I like those colors and it's my car so..... lol.....
