How do you define luxury in the modern age? Years ago, a luxurious home would be a big Victorian townhouse or country estate with lots of character features such as wood, sumptuous leather and, dare I say it, maybe a bit stuffy. You could almost have put the same labels on our luxury cars too.
But in these modern times, it’s more about quality of engineering, high tech, sustainability and space. When it comes to our houses, the Huf-Haus as a prime example. And just as this modern wonder of German engineering redefines our ideas of luxury living, the new Mercedes-Benz EQS is about to redefine how we perceive the modern luxury car. But can it deliver the same depth of respect that we have for its combustion-engined brethren, the iconic S-Class? We put the new Mercedes-Benz EQS450+ through the full AutoEV road test to find out......

As an owner of an EQS 450 I agree with your summery. The brakes do seem unresponsive at first however, once you get to drive this car as an EV car should be driven you don’t press the brake pedal much at all, also you get used to the blended braking and the brake pedal moving away as the car slows under recuperation. I would like some indication of the levels of friction V recuperation, the car will use friction with recuperation when braking from high speeds in short distances, it would be useful to know when friction brakes are applied… I want to avoid using them!

Hi there Nigel, I'm torn between the 450+ or the suv 580 myself. How does the 450 cope with the freezing cold temperatures? What is the real range in winter? As I want to use the car for road trips from the UK to Europe but in all the reviews people say the suv only has a range of 285 miles. I'm worried about the RWD on winter roads. The car sure looks nice though.

@@welsh2266 seems to be OK on consumption in cold temps. Check out a review that was made in Norway on consumption, drove it to the artic circle and slept in it overnight in the car. The consumption figures were OK.

When you did the earlier walkaround I said those air vents were horrible - I’m glad you agree! Having said that it is a tour de force and the restrained styling is far better than the tasteless BMW sunglasses grille. Beautiful and practical machine.

It's my dream car now, the only thing I don't like is that the upgrade from 4degrees to 10degrees on the rear steering is over the air - that's just blatant money grabbing, just make it standard.

Fabulously good review. No BS, accurate on the specs and figures and a very objective point of view, well done. It mirrors my take home impressions on my EQS 580. Its significantly more powerful but not that you would really notice since everything is butter smooth even under max power which, to be frank, is never necessary. However, in my neck of the woods where snow is a concern 5months a year, AWD is an absolute necessity. I drove a 450 and found its acceleration to be entirely adequate for any situation. Furthermore, being RWD makes it even more engaging to drive.

Great overview of the EQS and how Mercedes see the future. Would have liked a walk through of the Huf Haus as well and then the session would have been just perfect as I love both!!!

I've seen it this weekend. Next to an EQE. It was the base model without the huge screen. The EQE was more to my liking when looking at the price.

It’s not difficult to open the bonnet, but it’s pretty boring. However, it looks like a big leaf trap. Thanks for the review, would love one but can’t afford it in this life time.

The Hyperscreen actually increases the MB Agility GFV residual by circa £4k. So in essence, the monthly payment increases to around £100 per month more on a 48 month PCP on a car that's from at least £1000 + a month the hyperscreen is a no brainer

I think the Germans calculate cargo space up to the cover only so in practice the iX will hold more stuff, although I will agree the cargo space seems small relative to vehicle size

@@AutoEV the fact that they both measure cargo only to the top of the seats does not change the fact that iX has the larger cargo space if loaded fully. American specs reflect that:)

I really wish Mercedes upgraded. That fingerprint sensor so it could be used as a pin lock to prevent child accidental starting or driving as well as security so even if crooks scan the frequency of your key they still cannot drive it away without a pin or fingerprint

Very nice review 👍 You mention Jag dropping out of the luxury EV game, for those of us who went to university with many of the now Jag senior management, just like McLaren, we can testify they are in trouble, if their personalities are still as far up their backsides as they where 15 /20 years ago then they are most certainly in for a rough ride (but maybe they like it ‘a bit rough’ 😉) 🤦🏻‍♂️
