This week we undertake something that’s been pending for quite some time: replacement of the radiator on the W140. This wasn’t a terrible job - nothing complicated, just a good bit of disassembly and reassembly, and time spent doing it right with my OCD. Unfortunately, many of the OEM parts necessary for this job are NLA, so aftermarket parts may be necessary for many applications, especially moving forward into the future.
Thanks for watching, and be sure to tune in next week for the water pump replacement!

Parts Used

Consult a Mercedes-Benz parts catalog or a parts manager at your local dealership - many of these parts vary from model to model and/or year to year, and many are no longer available. Sourcing the parts is much of the challenge in this job!

Change your fan clutch and should be good if seating in traffic on hot weather temp wont go above 100*C or 212*F

It's better with the new cooling system and new fan clutch, but still will overheat on 110+ degree days. Known nuance of W140s. Thanks for watching!

redonKiLaus so if you changed the waterpump and thermostat And have flushed the cooling system like u showed and replaced the fan clutch as well than ur last shot could be the radiator. However though you might have some air trapped in the system and the way you let the air out is when car reaches normal temp 80*C on idle turn on the heat high on defrost and keep it that way for about 15-20 mins and if that dont work then probably the car has previously overheat and has caused head gasket problems which the M104 engines in the s320 are notoriously known for that.

@@gco1189 The cooling system is properly bled and the headgasket is known good - it's a W140 thing, I've seen it on numerous S500s and S600s as well here in Arizona. Folks generally just don't drive them during the summer, or just roll around town so as to not get stuck in stop-and-go traffic.

Mine does the same, though I feel that it really shouldn't. On my particular car, I suspect rust in the engine block, and a subpar aftermarket radiator. Fan clutch, water pump, and thermostat are brand new. Using MB coolant.

I just replaced my original radiator on my 1995 S320. I noticed that OEM radiator had MUCH smaller gaps between the cooling fins (almost looked like a condensor matrix on a home HVAC unit). It seems that the OE radiator was probably much better at dissipating heat than the replacement is. The new radiator looked just like a standard matrix. Do you know anything about this? I am going to order a new Genuine MB radiator and see if that has the better matrix. Perhaps this is the reason for overheating on HOT days as you said? Mine exhibits exactly the same behavior unfortunately. Does not seem to be normal to me. It should be able to handle it.

Interesting, I did not notice that about mine and do not know anything about that. Please let me know what you find out. The radiator in my car was a Behr replacement (I believe) so it likely had the larger spacing between fins like you mention, if that indeed was a change from OE to aftermarket. Thanks for watching!

@@redonKiLaus If you like, I can send you a photo of my Original radiator. I kept it on the chance that I couldn't find another new one like it, maybe I could refurbish this one (wasn't leaking, just plugged up). Obviously, with the smaller air passages in the matrix, it would definitely plug up a lot faster, and need cleaning more often.
