This harness is for the Camshaft Position Sensors actually! They are the ones that leak oil from the engine through the sensors to the plug and harness. The camshaft Adjusters do not leak oil so far so you need to change where you are installing the harness. Just trying to help you guys so you don't get confused. I have a video on my channel about the leaking camshaft position sensors in my channel. Please view it to understand... Thanks and Good Luck...

Mercedes Benz needs to come up with pigtails made of anti-capillary wires so it stops the oil, from my understanding, these pigtails don't do that, I believe they only intercept the oil and you still have to change the pigtail before it gets all the way through to the harness plug on the other end of the pigtail. My 2013 S550 had this issue a few months before the dealer sold me the car. The cars original owner took it in and the repair was $16,000. They pulled the engine and replaced the harness, the ECU, injectors, 02 sensors and a few other parts the oil got to. The dealer who did the work told me it will happen again even with the pigtails. It happened at 60,000 miles.
@josecitomarin
@josecitomarin Год назад
Thank you for your comment. Hopefully they do come up with something. Meanwhile we have to keep an eye on the solenoids and position sensors, and if they start leaking then yeah, throw out the pigtails and get new ones when you change the solenoids or sensors. One of my subscribers told me he had this issue at 30,000 miles. So we have to always look out for leaks.
@gottliebdee263
@gottliebdee263 10 месяцев назад
I’d suggest they didn’t need to do all that. A poor dealer will just replace the lot to prevent a return. A good dealer will inspect and replace as necessary.
@MercedesMechanic
@MercedesMechanic 9 месяцев назад
@@gottliebdee263 unfortunately there’s no permanent fix for this issue on the M278 engine and Germany has assured me they’re not going to do anything. The fix is replace the entire wiring harness of the engine and anything else the oil ruins. There is however a company on eBay that made pig tails for the cam sensors since Mercedes never did, but the pigtails are only a bandaid as it will continue to happen. Dealer just does what they’re told.

I just installed the pigtails, 1 of my 4 sensors had some oil on the factory plug. Don’t need to do anything besides replace the solenoids. Will putting in the sacrificial pigtails stop the oil from advancing. Don’t need to worry about the oil that already touched the harness?? I believe it just started as there didn’t appear to be much oil. Other 3 solenoids were clean. I also have zero issue with my car. It has 81k miles on it. Just need to know if no need to do anything else besides replace solenoids and add pigtails with the presence of a little oil?

I think these pig tail harnesses have their strands of copper wires that sealed off or are soldered solid to prevent it's capillary action that stop the leaked oil from travelling into ECU. But not sure about the one on camshaft or crankcase position sensor. Any pigtails for these. Only last year my mechanic had fitted my infamous M271 engine with pigtails. At that point had yet to notice any oil sticking on any of its multi pins. I had been thinking if premature wear on sprockets, timing chain and the holes of cam magnets (as seen in U tube) could be somehow be aggregated by flustered ECU making small but erratic adjustments leading to failure well before it's intended 250,000km lifespan. 🤔🤔🤔 I will forward your link to anyone I know that has a Mercedes. Thanks I think, on a yearly PM basis, I must disconnect the large ECU adaptor & spray in some electrical contact cleaner & swipe it clean with an oil absorption pad. Next year I will replace the adapter connection located on the automatic transmission body. Regards.

How do know when they are damaged and to change them again?
@josecitomarin

Thank you so much for your comment. If you see them wet again. Specially if it’s on both sides. They give you sometime for you to replace the position sensors or the solenoids. So if they are wet, you have to replace the position sensors and solenoids that are leaking as well.

Thanks for responding. Do you mean the sacrifice harness will get wet? Then you just put new sacrifice harness again? Thanks in advance. Keep the great videos coming.

Right. But if they got wet is because the sensors are bad. So keep an eye on them

I think you should start by checking your wiring to camshaft position sensors and solenoids. Than I would go by changing the cam position sensors and solenoids.
