The Mercedes Unimog is the most hardcore off-roader in the world. And I was granted access to one of the two record-breaking Unimog trucks which drove up a mountain in Chile to an altitude of 6,000 meters. You need special training to drive one of these things properly so Mercedes gave me a driver to do my bidding. Thankfully he was up for a laugh and was willing to take the Unimog wherever I suggested. So we departed from the 'official' off-road course and went full rogue to see where we could actually take the 4x4 and whether we could get it stuck. Watch the video to find out what happened....

Don’t worry Mercedes, we’ll edit out that one secret and we’ll just act like that question was never asked. That ‘MOG probably has a development suspension with some special enhancements that haven’t been released to the public yet.

If anyone wants to experience a Unimog, there is a Unimog Museum in Gaggenau Germany. Went there two years ago, the museum is in the old factory where the first ones were built; there is also an option to go on an obstacle course with one (not you driving of course). The guide was actually one of the workers who was in the factory from the very start, it was really a great experience.

"The Mercedes is the most hardcore off-roader in the world" It isn't an off-roader though, it's a Unimog, originally intended to replace tractors. That would be like calling a military 8x8 a mere lorry. Technically true, but it doesn't tell the whole story. Where I live you usually see them used by councils to maintain roadside shrubbery in summer, hovering up leaves in the autumn and the same vehicles in winter clearing roads from snow and spraying salt, not going off-road ever.

But they can go Off-road as well if you want to. There's a good and long video about the Unimog in german on the Mercedes-Benz Channel here on YT. I don't know if they support english subtitles

@@seanhunt7750 Except it's also a train engine in you need it to be. There are two in one shunt models which can go on rails and will happily pull anything from gravel cars to subway cars. The "uni" in "unimog" stands for "universal". You can attack all kinds of stuff to it, for all kinds of tasks.

Thanks for posting; I can understand your excitement! In ‘76 as an undergrad., I spend 6 months working in all departments of MB Gaggeäu where they manufactured the Unimog. At that time they were producing both original and new style of cabs. I spent a few days at their ‘test track’ with their chief test driver - he & MB’s track would have made your head explode compared with this post - happy days!

Immendingen! That was a Military training area until a few years ago. I was stationed in the barracks there for some weeks. Mercedes bought the barracks and the training area to build their test facilities there :D

There is a UNIMOG camper parked up sometimes close to my house. The cab starts about 4ft plus off the floor. Truly incredible vehicles.

Mark we use unimogs on the railway for working on the overhead electric lines , it has 2 sets of train wheels it can drop down to run on the track and with a large cherry picker platform on the back

You are like a little boy, so funny and i am so jealous, i missed out on buying two U900's in the 90's becaue they were both single cab and we needed double cab and ended up with a S75 4x4 Dodge 50 (Renault 50 series ) which was like a smaller version of a unimog.

We had an old one of these (kind of like the orange one in the video at 00:47) and it was a beast to drive. Especially the lower gears. Comfort is not a word that comes to mind ! The new ones seem very different though.
