I don’t mind it. In return you get the most reliable engine ever in a pleasant classic car. With all the noise and handling it just feels like you’re actually operating a machine and a piece of history/art. You don’t have the same feeling in a Tesla.

The performance is not bad at all (especially considering the era these were made in). Recently I watched a video of an American-spec 240D Automatic accelerating and it wasn't bad at all. I once had the pleasure of driving a 1979 Mercedes 200D W123 with the 60-horsepower engine and manual gearbox. I found it to be pretty "quick" from 0-80 km/h, but 80-100 km/h took "forever" (Official Mercedes figures provide a 0-100 km/h time of 33.2 seconds for the 200D W123). Basically the car was more than up to scratch for surviving even in today's city traffic conditions. My pick of the W123 bunch would be a 230E Automatic Sedan or 230TE Automatic Wagon. From the diesels I'd probably go for the 300TD Turbodiesel Wagon (a shame Europe never got the 300D Turbodiesel Sedan).

Yeah that 5spd and rear end would make a decent freeway commuter here in the states. 80mph at around 3500rpm. That’s loafin compared to my 79 automatic

That's about 60 mph in the U.S. My diesel 240d does 60 mph or about 100 km in 22 seconds. I use Amsoil synthetics in the engine, 4 speed manual and differential. I use the Amsoil Cetane boost and fuel cleaner lubricant. I have 205/70r14 Michelin tires and the top speed is closer to 90 mph because the tires are slightly over-sized. It is not the fastest car but I don't have any problem keeping up with traffic and it is a kick in the head to drive. I just wish I could find a 5 speed rather than the 4 speed but the 5 speed manual transmissions are almost impossible to find in the U.S.

What did you made to install the speedometer from the gasoline engine to diesel engine? I suppose you made output "W" from alternator, what next ? :) Thanks in advance for your answer!

Are you kidding? Who in their right mind could stand or tolerate such a high level of noise while driving even 60 mph? Yes, I used to own a 1984 300 TD sedan that was a bit faster and a lot quieter, but when things started to improve in my life financially, I eventually purchased a 2017 S550 sedan that is so quiet and powerful that you don't even realize that you're driving at 100 mph+ Sure, the early Mercedes' had their place and the Diesels were very rugged and dependable, but today's versions just blow them away in terms of comfort, power, and craftsmanship. Yes, today's Benz stands on the shoulders of their predecessors, but we are very fortunate to be living in an age of exception Mercedes technology, safety being one of the main contributing factors. That's all I have to say. Keep up the great work Mercedes!!
