End of the road on this maintance of the cooling system, here I check the relays responsible for turning auxiliary fans on, relay C is for high speed function and relay B is low speed, this is for my 1992, over the years they may differ so check a schematic for yours!
Only thing I did not do is acid flush the system, my mechanic neighbor told me some horror stories about it! but I did do a regular flush and old coolant came out very clean.

The resistor mod should kick in the fans at 92C not close to 100. It's possible there that your blue temp switch needs replacement to kick on the high fans at the 92C mark, or the single pole black sensor is sending an innaccurate reading to your instrument cluster. Also fyi, putting a 2k resistor instead will run the high fan speed at a higher temp, close to 100C. If you wanted it to run below 92C you would need a resistor at 1k or less.

To solve your overheating issues on any m103 there's two upgrades you need to do get a thermostat from a 460 SL that opens at 75° C and upgrade your fan clutch to a c-36 fan clutch it engages a lot sooner with these two modifications your temps will always be under 80° C

Thanks saw that setup on RU-vid, so far car is not overheating, I basically replaced almost everything, still I never really found what part was causing the issue, tested system when outside temps were in the warm 80's, now its winter colder 60's, what gets me is car has never run hot in 10 years ,then all of a sudden it started, pointing to a bad mechanical or electrical part, mechanical has been replaced, so... if car still has issue could be HVAC pushbutton unit, it may not be sending proper signal to relays, or the block may have deposits, but for now its running nice and cool, the 1978 450SL has the 75F thermostat that fits.

@@mygermancars7264 I'm having some odd electrical issues as well..one of the things I replaced is the voltage regular on the alternator one of the brushes was worn down quite a bit versus the other brush

@@mygermancars7264 i accidentally jump started my car with 240 volt 🤣 ..i checked all fues and nothing was fried not even the voltage protection relay next to the battery .. I'm just hoping it's the voltage regulator ..

I changed my w140 300 m104 blue switch senior that orgnal in the car switch point 120 c to black mahle one fitted for w210 switch point 85c start and stop on 80c .but the issue that sensor the fan still run in high speed because temperature not coming 80c😊 so i replacement to old one blue and i keep black for summer

Disconnect the plugs from the dual fan and install a davies craig digital fan controller. You can adjust the led readout to desired temp. My car constantly ran at 100c and above in summer with new clutch fan. Thermostat. Water pump and electric fan. Now I can drive in 100f plus days with ac on max and my car runs about 85c. And no more power loss from clutch fan Plus mpg is a bit better. Its the best $65 I have ever spent. Car runs so much better. The davies craig digital controller has dual fan output. Fan comes on as soon as ac is on. Plus fan will run for a couple min to cool after shut down. Very nice unit well made and easy installation. Wish I would have done it years ago.

I've worked on my own cars for years, this issue was strange and difficult for me to diagnose on this car, I did not find one bad part on the car? that's why I just started replacing parts, I figured some parts were just old and it wouldn't hurt, all coolant parts were replaced, still had hot running issues, so next was the electrical part of system, I suspect it was the aux fans not coming on at certain hot temps 115C , hi and low speed relays checked out OK, one part I could not test was the climate control unit in dashboard, according to the schematic, the 2 pin temp sensor on head sends signal to CCU and then sends signal to high speed fan relay, relay then sends power to ballast resistor located by headlight ,then to fans. I read many internet posts to test Hi speed function pull the electrical connection on 2 pin sensor while car is running and fans will come on at Hi speed, mine would not do that, I don't know if the CCU is sending signal or just a design change on my year? one thing I could try ,I have a spare sensor, I could hook it up to electrical connection there at head , without install into head, heat it up with a blow dryer to 115C and see if fans come on at high speed. if they don't I would suspect CCU not sending signal to relay, a really good schematic of system would be helpful, the Low speed function is a completely different system and path, mine works.

6 cylinder old mercs engine’s cooling systems are trash … my ‘93 m104 does it all the time when on idle with a/c on …. My ‘90 m103 did the same without A/C 🤣🤣
