The End of Southern Steam day trip provides a unique opportunity to visit the Yeovil Railway Centre and the popular seaside resort of Weymouth for the afternoon. This special train to mark the anniversary of the end of Southern steam will be hauled by steam locomotive No. 35028 Clan Line
The End of Southern Steam Railtour was the Waterloo-Bournemouth Line has often been referred to as 'Britain's last steam-worked main line' and at the start of summer 1966 it remained steam-worked Monday-Friday, with the weekends taken over by Crompton Type 3 diesels. From here on however there was a steady decline in steam services and the final end came on Sunday 9 July 1967.
Merchant Navy 35028 Clan Line
35028 was built at Eastleigh Works in 1948. After a few weeks running in, it was allocated first to Dover and then to Stewarts Lane shed in London (which coincidentally is where 35028 Clan Line is preserved today.) From where it worked, heavy trains on the trunk routes to the South East Channel ports, frequently working the prestige expresses, Golden Arrow and the Night Ferry. After rebuilding in 1959, it was initially allocated to Nine Elms shed, from where it headed such trains as the Bournemouth Belle and the Atlantic Coast Express (which also has a steam day trip for the particular railtour.) While working the latter in 1961, it was unofficially timed at 104 mph (167 km/h) passing Axminster. On 2 July 1967, Clan Line hauled a farewell special from London Waterloo to Bournemouth and back and thus ended its British Railways career. Not all was lost for the Clan Line, it was preserved one month later by the Merchant Navy Locomotive Preservation Society. In September 1994, it was the first steam locomotive in the United Kingdom to be fitted with air brakes. And the Clan Line returned back to the mainline in October 2006.
