In this video I show the value of installing a crankshaft and checking for spin prior to measuring clearances. I had a defective bearing that I discovered using this method.
I also installed the timing set as well.

yes, the crankshaft is supposed to move easily even with new bearings... it should start to rotate easily by hand and it shouldn't feel like there is any resistance when you start turning it... the fault could also be that a bearing bracket had gone to the wrong place or some debris or it could be small casting fault in the bearings as well...if it doesn't spin well and wobbles, there is a risk of bearing damage etc..I can say that from experience, which is true...you shouldn't feel resistance when you start spinning and don't wobble..

What happens if there's too much clearance??

I use 0.001” smaller bearing or swap in a different bearing. Bearings sometimes have factory defects. This happens a lot.

Was that lined board ?

No. Too expensive. Cheaper to get another block.

You're not going to check the clearances first ?

No if it’s too tight you waste time checking clearances. I’ve said it in many videos, I recommend that the crank be checked for free rotation then check clearances. If it binds, all the labor checking clearances is lost if you have to replace a crank or bearings.

Where are you buying your bearings😢 you shouldn't need to do any of that except check all your clearances make sure the board is straight😮 play that's not my engine.

Bearings are machined parts and have tolerances. I’ve also gotten the wrong parts in the right box. I use good quality Clevite Mahle MS-909P bearings. It’s just the nature of building a precise machine that dimensions don’t always match.
