Comparing the performance of the 3.3hp and 5hp Mercury outboards on the same Aluminium boat. Both of these outboards are built by Tohatsu in Japan, I love the smallerTohatsu (50hp and lower), great motors.
yes but that boat it's pretty much empty... add 2 other guys in the boat plus some fishing gear and then the 3.3hp will move the boat at 5km/h. Not by near enough to plane the boat, but good enough to move from one place to another in a lagoon. the 5hp won't plane either if fully loaded, but will move the boat around 8 to 10km/h, and will endure a little better against waves
Excellent video mate. Going to hopefully grab a 5 hp Mercury real soon..... Your video pushed me in the right direction... Nice one. I spent decade's in the land of plenty. Best Country in the world., 😉
So true, I have found the Japan built Mercury (really Tohatsu painted black with Mercury stickers) for the under 60hp are super powerful and reliable. I am impressed too mate. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
Thanks for the comparison. I’m going to buy a 5hp Tohatsu shortly, but notice Parsun is also popular and cheaper. Would be interested to know your thoughts on the Parsun if you’ve tried it before.
Get anywhere from a 6 to a 15 depends where you are. In the creeks a 6 is ok but if you want to go the ocean get a 8hp or a 9.9 so you don’t have too much weight but enough power for the boat. If you’re going on a big lake go all out an get a 15. Plenty of speed for tubing but also if it breaks you don’t get eaten by a shark.
Those 5's are awesome. What length is your tinny? I had mine on a friend's 10ft fg dink. It would get stuck at around 20kph. When I moved forward it accelerated to 24 and when I moved back again it went all the way to 28kph. Just needed that little c.g. shuffle to help it get on the plane.
I have both of those motors Tohatsu branded. Also I have a Honda 4 stroke, and Nissan/Tohatsu 2 stroke motors, both 5HP. The Honda just chugs along at full throttle with my 3.500 lbs sailboat, the Nissan makes it fly, big difference. The problem is that in California where I live, is not legal to sell 2 Strokes anymore, and in Lake Tahoe, a beautiful lake in the Sierras, 2 strokes are forbidden altogether. Nurse your 2 strokes as long as you can
I saw a comparison recently between (iirc) a 5HP and a 9Hp. The 9 whooped the 5, and the only difference between the otherwise identical motors, apart from the price, was the 9 had a bigger hole in the carburetor jet.
Hi mate, Yeah, it’s good to know, especially if you have the 5hp version. I don’t know of any outboards that share a block between 5hp and 9hp but I know a few that share between the 5hp and 8hp and definitely a big difference in performance for sure. Happy new Year 🎆 cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
I just put a riser bracket on the back of my 11' De Havelland Tinny to get the cavitation plate of the outboard level with the bottom of the boat. It absolutely flies with a 5HP when I sit in the middle of the boat like you do but it doesn't like turning at full speed now without Ventilating. Any suggestions? Also what is the height of your transom, mine is 17.5" now?
@@25hpboatracerman I have the option of lowering it an inch but I have a 3.3 I want to try on it first. If it has the same problem with both the 3.3 and the 5, then I will cut it down. Cheers.👍
Thanks for the great video, finally I have found someone compare between 3.3hp & 5hp with same person and same boat. Interesting Indeed. You gave us a clear idea between of them. However I have I question if you don’t’ mind. Your boat how much does it weight roughly? Again thanks for great video
A 3.5hp will push it no problem, just won’t be fast. I would say you may see 8 knots with one onboard and about 5 or 6 fully loaded. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
I'm just wondering if wé can use a lake hull in a salty water, i have a 21 feet hull with 200 hp purshassed in Canada and sent To be used in thé méditerranéen, is there any risk
Hey mate what size is your boat ?? I have a 13 foot Tinny I use to have a 15 on it but it seized I can only really afford a new 5hp 4 stroke do you think that would be ok
Hi mate, That tinny is 10ft and pretty light. A 5hp won’t go that fast on a 13ft tinny. If your used to a 15, a 5hp will feel pretty sad. If your happy to put around then it’s up to you. The 5hp I was testing was a two stroke so not too sure how the 4 stroke 5hp compares but probably similar. I would personally be looking for a good 15hp second hand but like I said, if your happy to put around at about 12-15kph flat out then all good. Hope this helps, Cheers
With the 5hp, sitting in the middle or the back does not really make a difference to the speed as it’s fully up on the plane. The 3.3hp just doesn’t quite get there so sitting in the middle forces the nose of the boat down, leveling it out and slight increase to speed. Hope this helps. Cheers
Good point mate. I tried sitting on the middle seat with the 5hp, i actually lost speed by 1.7kph. I think I lost speed due to the front being pushed down while being up on the plane (skimming over the surface). The 3.3hp does not have enough power to get up on the plane (skimming over the surface) so sitting on the middle seat and dropping the front seemed to increase speed as I saw by the GPS read outs. Interesting that sitting on the middle seat with the 3.3hp increased top speed and sitting on the middle seat with the 5hp decreased speed. Cheers, Glenno
Hi Mate, Yep, full forward, neutral and reverse gears on the 5hp. the 3.3hp version of your motor (I am assuming we are talking two strokes) has forward and neutral. cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
Sure, The 3.3hp has a 1.4 liter internal fuel tank. I’ve found I get about 1hr running time out of that 1.4 liter tank if I’m cruising at about 4000rpm. Full throttle uses the tank up in about 40mins. I just carry a 5litre jerry if I’m going any place when I will use more than a tank. Keep in mind i can probably get about 10 kilometers on one tank for a distance reference if the motor is on a small tinny or small inflatable. Normally if I’m going far I take a bigger outboard, but it does still happen from time to time.
Normally only the 2.5hp has no neutral and is just direct drive. The 3.3hp has neutral and reverse. The only difference in the 2.5hp and the 3.3hp is a restriction washer behind the carburetor, so if it’s a 2.5hp you can just remove that if the want the 3.3hp. Does your motor still have the model and serial number? Cheers
Just buying my 12 year old a tinnie with same merc, 5hp. Think the tinnie is 10ft, yet to sight, buying of good mates elderly dad sight unseen. $750 includes trailer. In Tweed Heads Nsw. In NSW under 4 kilowatts no need to register boat, a 5hp is about 3.7 kilowatts. His age can’t do more than 10 knots . Anywa, what size of 5 hp fuel tank and what time/kms you get from it. Appreciate your opinion. Cheers 👍👍
Sounds like a good deal to me. I’m in NSW so same rules here. The 5hp Mercury - tohatsu normally has an inbuilt Fuel tank, some did come without the internal tank but all of them can connect to an external tank. You don’t need any bigger than a 12 liter tank. If you decide to just run with the internal tank (which is totally fine) I would carry an extra 5 liter jerry van onboard as well. The 5hp on my tinny reached about 15 knots with just me in the boat. The waterways authority and water police have not ever had an issue in my experience with speed if the motor is under 6hp. If the boat has more than one person in it it will be considerably slower. Hope this helps. Cheers
Also forgot to say I was getting around 10km distance off one tank at full throttle from the inbuilt tank or around 25 mins at full throttle. I think the inbuilt tank is 2.5 liters. Cheers
Hey thanks for the awesome quick reply. Good info. Tried sending you a photo but didn’t seem to be able to here . We live basically on the river in a unit. Love the water, ocean, etc, I grew up sailing Palm Cove Cairns his age. Every day after school sailed and then all weekend. The Water, ya can’t beat it, it’s just magic. 👍😀
Absolutely, it needs 50 to 1 fuel to oil mix. Make sure to use marine two stroke oil (not lawnmower oil that is designed for a different running temperature) Outboard two stroke only! Every 5 liters of fuel needs 100ml of two stroke outboard oil. Have fun. Ps the motor will only run for about 3 mins without oil and will cause enough damage internally to require a rebuild. Cheers, Glenno
Thanks mate, The fuel mix I use is 50 to 1. So that’s 50 parts petrol to 1 part two stroke outboard oil - every 5 liters of fuel is 100ml of oil. Make sure you use outboard two stroke oil and not just lawn mower two stroke oil as they are different. Cheers 👌
@@AddisonCampbellBasketball Hi mate, If it a light 3.5m tinny with nothing much on board apart for you at 50kgs, with the 5hp two stroke I reckon you might see the same numbers. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
Not sure why your only getting about 2 kilometers. What size boat is it on and how heavy? Did you measure the distance with a gps? Distance on water is hard to judge without a gps.
The 4 strokes are not just heavier, but never seem to be able to give the power they are listed at. A 5hp 2 stroke will in many circumstances feel twice as powerful as a 5hp 4 stroke. It also drinks twice the fuel of course! As for noise, well single cylinder 4 strokes can be noisier at speed than the 2 stroke.
