Type Hewittic 150/6 24102 Mercury Arc Rectifier. Made in England.
6 wire AC input, DC comes out the bottom, the negative is 0v from the ac transformer.
To operate small excitation is obtained within the mercury pool, a single small aux arm via solenoid dips into the mercury to initiate a small excitation arc.
Further stability is obtained by constantly running the 2 smaller aux anodes to prevent dropout.
The main current is the 6 big Anodes down to the mercury pool.
Current passing through the mercury vapour can only travel in one direction, thus creating forward current only.
The heat rises to the big envelope and condenses the mercury and it runs back down into the mercury pool.
Assumed to be operating 600v 150A

First days of my apprenticeship were spent in the DC hall of Glengarnock steelworks. It was a big room with a massive mercury rectifier in the middle surrounded by Frankenstein switchgear. I didn't know what it was at the time, but they were covered in the day release at college because so many were still in use at that time. (1981)

It's designed to handle a shit-load of current, but in use there would normally be a fan underneath it blowing air up past it. I wonder what sort of illuminated path you'd get if you used a high frequency cold-cathode inverter on it.

I've never seen one with UV screening other than the cabinets they were sometimes mounted in. The glass will screen most of the dangerous wavelengths. You have to use specific glass like borosilicate to actually pass the more dodgy wavelengths.

Many cinemas used these rectifiers one for each projector. They were really reliable, some running for over 60 years. In cinema use they ran the carbon rods that provided the arc which in turn provided the light for the projectors. Typically burning at around 25/32 volts DC at 60/100 amps ie 2/3 KW. When xenon lamps replaced the carbon rods these rectifiers were changed to solid state diode type rectifiers with big capacitor smoothing. Xenon lamps do not like ripple in the DC. The mercury rectifiers provided no smoothing what so ever. I loved to watch them, better than the films at times. In use the mercury falls like rain back into the pool below.

@@cambridgemart2075 yes you can use them but the ripple would blacken the lamp and shorten the life of the lamp. You could always add a few capacitors of course. Many did.

What really impresses me is how they managed to blow the glass into such a large, complex shape, while evacuating the atmosphere, while situating all the metallic components, while having all that mercury sloshing around. Certainly more visually striking than a quiet solid state rectifier.

Probably pretty easy... You blow one thing at a time, and keep adding it to the octopus, and once you've built the entire thing, just leave a long evacuation tube somewhere... only THEN do you pull out all the air and put in whatever gasses you want (or pure vacuum).. Its not like they have to do every step all at the same time as the glass is molten...

Back before the days of silicon and transistors they used these monsters to rectify AC current into DC current. Before transistors they had vacuum tubes, the Mercury Arc Rectifier is a particularly large variant of a rectifying tube. They were commonly used in radio applications and providing high current DC power for rail car traction motors. For size comparison Photon's tube is actually relatively small compared to how large they used to make those things.

when you run a fluctuating current, AC(+-+-+-+-+-), through mercury it products a flow of electrons. but only on the positive side of the wave, which is why there are six separate phases... so the DC current will be as smooth as possible. the giant bulb lets the mercury vapor condense and drip back to bottom where the AC current is being introduced. awesome vid Photon! If I had one of those in my shop, I would stare at it for hours!

The mercury vapour allows electrons to travel in only one direction, so it rectifies the AC current to DC current. The most well-known use of this particular design was for the London Underground rail system to power the DC traction engines. All these systems have now gone solid-state, and as far as I know, the last one was replaced not that long ago, within the last year or so.

Hackbridge Hewitic up the road in Walton, nice little light weight bottle rec. Ours turned up in the 50's. Our original bungalow Stn's from 1935 fitted with a steel tank Rec, 12 phase 900v feeds, vacuum & cooling. Had a Rec. crane above, to lift the lid (Anode cleaning !!! ) 9' tall 7' wide. Staff on no-load ignition fail, resorted to a temp. dummy load - metal bucket, water, a horizontal wood pole, and the 30' earthing leads, instant steam and green water. (I did make the mistake with 'mercury recovery' of scooping to much into the plastic bucket, had to be returned 2/3 back to the pool (and needed a lot more buckets)) and topping up coolant water with a 16'=> rubber hose to an outside tap... Yep ! Mercury & Asbestos on my medical records, no re-action to either contaminents yet !

The favourite way of these getting damaged is by being moved clumsily. if Hg sloshes into one of the tubes too quickly it can break the glass. I think they were upside down in transit. Now rare as rocking horse shit, like the man said. I think some are still installed but redundant; if the condition of the ones on ebay is anything to go by the standard way of making them safe (aka buggering them up) is dressing up in ventilator and hazmat suit, snapping one off and draining the Hg out. Who's going to buy one with a lump missing? (more to the point try persuading a glassblower to repair one..)

Mercury vapor is deadly. Deaths have resulted from blood pressure instruments being spilled on carpet in a child's bedroom. The metal constantly gasses off, and inhalation is the most deadly exposure route. The epidemic of brain damage in Japan, caused by Mercury contamination, was due to metallic Mercury being dumped in the sea. Now, before you jump to reply and say that it was methyl mercury, understand this: _bacteria in soil and water convert metallic mercury into methymercury_ It is an awful thing to be toying around with in an uncontained form, especially idiotic stunts like "10lbs of mercury in a toilet - will it flush?" etc.
