MERCURY-Filled Water Balloon - Science! 

I'm in my 60s, and I still remember somebody bringing mercury to our 6th grade class and dropping a teaspoonful of it on everyone's desk, and how much FUN it was to play with it. It was one of the most fascinating things. Of course, none of us knew there was anything dangerous about it, but isn't it interesting that all these years later I still remember it's texture, how it was neither wet nor dry to the touch, how it separated into several little balls when you put your finger on it, how it rolled around on my desk like a dozen little sparkling stars, how if you put a penny into the mixture it made the penny shimmer like silver, and how it felt almost magical to handle. Proves that kids learn by "doing". A teacher could have told me all year long about the marvels of mercury, and it would've meant nothing to me, but to actually experience it changed the whole learning experience for me...for a lifetime.

I bet you'd win a water balloon fight with the local kids if you threw that.

Why does this have so many views? And why so many dislikes? It was exactly what the title said it was. Maybe people were expecting and explosion or something.

While watching the video the only thought I had on my mind was "Where the hell did you get Mercury!!!!!"

I really miss childhood, and getting to play with mercury barehanded, rolling it around with index cards. I really do. I know now that it's dangerous and sometimes wonder if I damaged my brain at all. But it was so much fun.

I don't entirely understand the point in filling a balloon with murcury. Could someone explain why this was worthy of a video?

That’s crazy- I didn’t know you can still get mercury. We had the hazardous material police at my work make us get rid of a mercury barometer/thermometer that was in perfect working order for fear of it breaking.

Your videos are really neat, I like how you take the "what if...." and make it reality. As much fun as it is to share cat videos with my grandkids, I personally and most fascinated by the weird side of science. And it's just as fun to peek into the comments section and watch you give it right back to the peanut gallery. Most of 'em aren't used to it I bet.

Geez, with how fucking heavy mercury is and how damn poisonous it is, if you had balloons made of just the right material allowing them to stay in tact with it in them while in flight and burst on impact, this sorta thing would be VERY lethal. Just fucking imagine getting hit with a thing that heavy going like a fastball and then having it spray poison all over you!

You made quite a mistake by wearing just slippers instead of some closed off shoes, also, a pair of longer jeans might've been a bit more safer too, how'd you think of the gloves but not about the safety of your feet? Im not sure if mercury actually can do damage to your skin, but atleast set a good example. I've been taught that even though youre working with water, always stay as safe as possible, just so you automatically think of covdring yourself up in case one time shit goes wrong and you got some acid or something all over you. Just a little tip, if you feel confident enough to not use prptection, thats fine, just know accidents happen when you least expect it!
