2007 150HP Mercury OptiMax was only hitting 4200RPM at WOT. Used this video to check the spark and coil. Sure enough one cylinder had no spark. Replace ignition coil, now running at the normal 5200 RPM, WOT. Thanks for the help. I was able to do this with pontoon in the water. Just back the pontoon into the slip.
Scott, mine did not bog down like you mentioned. I just lost several hundred rpms. if the coils and plugs check ok, you may have a cylinder or more down. I would pressure test each cylinder that will tell you if one or more is down. it could also be other things. did this just happened recently. knowing the history of your motor will help.
The symptoms you had for the bad coil, mine is the hole shot like you mentioned then after running and getting the motor warmed up it will not get above 2000 rpm so I can't get on plane again until I let the motor sit for awhile. It is like the motor bogs down over 2000 rpm. My motor is only a 90hp. I'm just wondering if yours acted similiar. I have a tester like you used and I'm going to test mine.
2008 Merc Opti 250 - first holeshot of the year, it was bogged down so bad, I thought the boat was filling with water. Eventually it gained enough power to get to plane - then was fine the rest of the day. I had a reoccurring nightmare of when the coil went on me in 2010. Is there a more common coil that goes bad? (plug 6 or plug 1?)...I may grab one and a set of spark plugs - they're likely 5 seasons old. :(
no not that i've come across. Any coil can go. Get yourself a spark plug tester and then you can figure out if it's a coil. Also have a look at your tracker valve. That can cause issues also. I have a video on the channel for this.
@@topgunbass I had a look last night and I possibly found an issue - the top two spark plug boots on the right, had nearly slid off, but when I pushed them back up, they could easily be slid back off - gunna go grab a bunch of 6inch plug/boot combos today and get some dielectric grease on them. Also, my fuel filter was black....that's been changed now...and I see two white inline fuel filters as well, going to hunt those down today and change them. Redoing my lower unit oil last night(cuz I don't trust the dealer now) I also found the screw behind the prop seemed a bit less than tight tight - the oil was grey, which I believe is some water in the lower unit gear case. Great. So glad I spent the $440 on service at the dealer last fall. ffs - need a new dealer. Hmmm...where are yoooooou located? lol
@@Crushin123 you've been busy. Nice to see you figuring out your motor and changing a few things. Make sure you remember the correct orientation of those white filters when you put them back.
do you know what your rpm was before it bogged down. if it's just a bad coil you will drop some but not down that low unless you have several bad coils. whether my engine was cold or warm it would act the same. check your plugs also. you could have several bad plugs.
I have a 200 xr6, is it the same concept for I took it to a shot they said it was fuel pump but yet after going on the water I can't go over 5 mph and still bogs down I shut engine off then it will run but still a bogs out once I'm getting up to speed. Any idea thanks
Check the tracker valve. I had mine go a few times. Check the plugs and coils. It's the simple things first. It's possible it's the fuel pump but I'd Check the others first.
@joshbirtchetfishing5196 it's a small diaphragm that regulates the fuel pressure. It it gets damaged you will have problems. You can get rough idle, or stall outs loss of power.
just wondering I have a 2010 200 xs mine is doing the same thing . but once and awhile I had an alarm . last time out after having it worked on. dealer said thermostat was stuck open causing it to run rich and fouling the #3 plug . anyway after getting it back out started doing same thing missing again no alarm. 4200- 4800 rpm max . didn't seem like it started until the engine got warmer is that what happened . thanks
Hello, searching for some help. I have a 2008 Optimax DFI 200HP 2 Stroke as well. Blew The Old Powerhead with only 188hrs. Just replaced The new Powerhead today. My friend put The new One on. Started right up and ran smooth until we put Her in neutral, revved her up high, and a loud beeeeeeeeep come on till we revved down. My friend check the bottom two Spark Plugs and they looked clean. He performed the test like you did in the video, and the plug tester lit up.The other spark plugs looked good. He claims something must be miss firing. What do you think? It's a new Powerhead. We did take the old components off The old Powerhead but like I said, only 188 hrs on last Powerhead. Haven't ran a computer test, hoping to do that Monday but obsessing over the though of what it could be. Any suggestions or opinions would be appreciated, thank you!
when was the last time you changed the plugs? some may be done and time to change. that's why they may look different. also check if the gaps are all the same. if you haven't changed them in a few years I'd buy a new set.
Peter I don't think you will get a beep from miss fire. was the beep continuous? it is possible to come on if you over rev the engine (in neutral). There are other factors that can cause it. If it continues its best bring to dealer.
Hmmmm, maybe that was It! My friend was revving it hard in neutral and it was a continuous beep, elongated. Also, any thoughts on why a couple of spark plugs are cleaner than the other four? Like I said, we did that test, and there was spark.
TOP GUN - BASS no it is just 2 connectors, each on separate coils. I am wondering if that’s preventing the motor from firing. It will crank but I can’t get it to fire
If you are only maxing at 3500 rpm I don't think it's a coil. If you have a bad coil you will drop a few hundred RMP. But not that low. Check your plugs.
