Can't believe I've been thinking about a Meren deck, researching it, made a test proxy version, but didn't have the cash available to build it. Then I happened to pull a Meren out of a Mystery draft last night, and then this episode comes out this morning - I think this is what you call divine intervention telling me to build a Meren deck.

Cards you missed that are budget and good hits in Meren: -Growth Spasm -Ravenous Chupacabra (I'm really surprised here) -Sifter of Skulls Also a very rare card: -Faceless butcher Which is almost a Fiend Hunter in Black, with instant speed sac effects it becomes straight exile.

Holy hell! I was literally searching for a good Commander video on Meren all day yesterday since I got her in one of my Mystery Booster packs. It's like I was meant for this commander.

i like how you designed the deck. i went a different route when i first made my meren deck and focused more on eldrazi scion and spawn tokens. bunch of free sac fodder that helps ramp and block.

I love this Commander.

Journey to Eternity is also a nice include. If it flips into Atzal, Cave of Eternity you can reanimate something extra once every table rotation+ if you have seedborn muse you can reanimare something each turn

My first deck was mashing your list for muldrotha with JLK's brawl deck. I'm looking forward to building this deck as my first ever golgari deck!

I have a Meren and i would recommend some of this for upgrades: - Spawning Pit: free sac outlet, artifact so it's harder to kill, and every time you got 2 charge counters on it you can put a 2/2 spawn which can also fuel the pit and Meren. It used to be stupidly cheap at $0.15 USD but now days its nearly at $4 USD. Either way great card in general. - Mitotic Slime: Sometimes fulling Meren takes too much time, then put this $0.50 USD sucker and it and all its tokens you can easily get 7 experience counters in 1 turn and after that an ever growing army of chump blockers and sac reserves, a pain in the ass wall that always works. - Massacre Wurm: Absolutely INSANE, infest ETB, take 2 lives when an opponent creature dies, combos really well all the grave pact effects around. Big downside $20 USD, needs more reprints. - Any Wrath cards: You don't care about your creatures and you can easily play to attrition your opponents. There are some cheap black and golgary wraths around so don't worry getting Damnation, it helps but its not vital. I run Black Sun's Zenith ($4.50 USD), Decree of Pain ($3.35 USD) Nevinyrral's Disk ($2 USD), Pernicious Deed ($3.80 USD) and Damnation ($31 USD). But if you want budget, you can run Extinguish All Hope ($0.75 USD) and Life's Finale ($1.75 USD) - Living Death: It works every time but just to be sure put something to screw with the other graveyards or have ready all of those sweet grave pact effects and for $4.50 USD its a must. - Entomb and Buried Alive: They are a must, entomb it's expensive ($9 USD) in comparison to Buried a Life ($1.50) but with at least one of them you have a huge advantage. - Birthing Pod: It is way too good to ignore an will look for what you need and because of its ban in modern $9 USD its reasonable. - Nim Deathmantle: Sometimes you have a lot of free mana on Meren, so with will help you abuse ETBs or keep her around a lot for $6 UDS. - Deathrender: You want free creatures in play? for $1.75 USD and a sacrificed creature you get it. - Carrion feeder / Viscera seer / Phyrexian Ghoul / Nantuko Husk / Yahenni, Undying Partisan: Sac outlets with legs, only yahenni and viscera go over $2 USD the rest are less than $0.30 USD. - Gravebreaker Lamia: it is WAY superior to Corpse Connoisseur for the same price in mana and for only $0.50 USD. - Skullclamp: Just get it, those $6 USD are worth it. - Guardian Project: Its a damn shame its price went to $3.70 USD, it used to be way cheaper but for that constant draw it is worth. - Journey to Eternity: They are going to kill Meren a lot, to have a resurrection land it is too good to ignore... $4.20 USD - Zendikar Resurgent: More draw, more mana and hard to kill, used to be cheap... $4.50 USD. - Razaketh, the Foulblooded: This will be your most dangerous card and with Savra in play he will be a god... $15 USD. - Bitter Ordeal: do you hate combo decks? clear the board or a lot of tokens then play this $12 USD combo breaker or secure a victory by getting rid of all the things that will mess with your deck.

Spore Frog is almost Golden Pig worthy in even non-budget decks. It easily starts gaining you experience counters and turns you into a pillow fort deck singlehandedly.

I had a Meren precon that I slowly built up over the course of about three years before it got stolen. There's lots of cool things you can do with this deck, yes Hard hitters like Kokusho and Westvale Abbey are always good but some bigger brain strategies using a Mycoloth Devourer to produce a couple saporlings, sacrifice it, and then bring it back to cannibalize it's own children. I also had a legendary turn where Vulturous Zombie + Dread summons got me a 34/34 flyer in one move

Wow love the deck! I just made one of these recently on tapped out. Had some of the same cards, but was waaaay more expensive.

Black Green is pretty much what I always want to run, I pulled Meren a few days ago at a draft and immediately thought of building a deck with her, so absolutely perfect timing. I am kinda surprised you didn't mention Reaper of the Wilds though, almost the same thing as Catacomb Sifter but can defend itself.

I think perhaps adding a plaguemaw beast in the deck could help it a bunch. It can be a sacrifice outlet and then proliferate the experience counters you have :)

Creakwood Liege has a good anthem effect, and gives you more sacrifice fodder each turn

Would you consider a video about how you make cut choices for reasonable upgrades? The cuts in this video are not exactly strictly better cards but wholly different in function.

Pulled this card from a mystery booster and was stoked. Put it in my muldrotha deck which is all about sacrificing. Maren brings back creatures for free muldrotha makes sure there is enchantments and artifacts to keep the combos going

Acolyte of affiction has become one of my favorite new cards, mills two cards and then gets you a permanent back to your hand love the value it gives.

I think it's a little pricier now, but I love running Sidisi, Undead Vizier in my Meren deck. Using Sidisi to exploit itself for choice cards and exp counters sets up insane combos fast

Meren is by far my favorite commander! Though mine currently is more on the competitive side, I still got some awesome ideas from your deck tech.

Dictate of Erebos is another good mention for this deck. May not be a creature but is a second Butcher.

Ah, Meren, always fun to play :). When I'm feeling nostalgic, I'll swap in Songs of the Damned (Dark Ritual's big brother) and Bone Harvest for fun.

I would say noosegraf mob is a great way to gain extra zombies to help feed your activated sacrifices without removing key cards from your field.

My Fav combo finisher with Meren is Tooth n Nail (Entwine) for Sheoldred whispering one and It that Betrays. To make everyone hate you, even more, throw in a winter orb ;)

Just out of curiosity but why no burnished hart? It seems perfect for this deck (6 months later) but 1.32$ on tcgplayer. 3 mana sac it to search for two basic lands onto the battlefield. I've not built my Meren deck yet, but ideally this is a slam dunk card for this deck.

Is there any chance that you'll ever do an Oathbreaker deck tech? I know it's not a popular subtype of EDH, but I would be very interested to see what kind of crazy combinations you could come up with for the format, and maybe you could even include a segment where you upgrade the deck to be a full EDH deck. I really enjoy the Oathbreaker format for how cheap it can be to get into while still maintaining the competitive and fun factors. It's a shame it's dying out.

I love Meren. I just built a deck for her and i’m very excited to play it as I love Golgari. Is it sad I would get the Secret Lair just for her?

Take out wayfarers bauble. Zero dredge?!?! I have strong feelings about that. (Deep breath) Besides this, the deck has a lot of good interactions but no big game plan for winning. Seems like this is a crawling meren deck with slow draw and recursion. Probably also needs to be more creature based.
