The Seven Sisters - South Tottenham "ghost train" has been shuffled about over the years, and is currently diverted via Stoke Newington due to the ongoing Gospel Oak - Barking improvement work. It's due to return to the normal route on 26th May, running as the 0530 Liverpool Street - Enfield Town on Saturdays.
There also used to be in the morning rush hour a service from Cheshunt - Stratford (Before the Stratford Regen) stopping at all stations bar South Tottenham that used this curve - also interestingly, it was the only train to run using the Stratford lines at that point.
@@ERGZ Stratford - Bishop's Stortford trains, calling at Cheshunt, run regularly throughout the day now, though not using the South Tottenham curve. They provide the mainstay of the service through Lea Bridge station, and then join the Liverpool Street - Cambridge main line just south of Tottenham Hale.
"Meridian Water" sounds a bit corporate, here are some alternatives: - Upper Edmonton - Edmonton Road - Leaside Park (if they build a Park within the development) - Remediation Square for IKEA (jk)
Nice to see somebody putting in the infrastructure before the development is itself is finished. And even nicer to see them making provisions for expansions. Mostly it seems to come as a shock for the planers that people need to be able to move around in an easy fashion after the development is finished.
It's just the same here. The East West rail link (Oxford - Bedford) has a missing link between Bicester and Bletchley which is about the same distance, 13 miles. Approved in 2008, it is currently expected to be completed in 2024 - that's sixteen years! The so-called "Thameslink 2000" project, which is an upgrade with very little new track, was started in 1993. It will finally be completed in May this year, eighteen years late, and 25 after it was started.
AND 7000 JOBS!!!! Yes Zoe, 7000 temporary jobs for builders who'll piss off elsewhere or become unemployed when the bubble bursts and most of the 10000 homes will go to overseas investors. What a great thing for Londoners, innit Zoe!
The plan for Meridian Water seems similar to Glenfield and Lidcombe stations in Sydney - it works well and saves space. Wish they were doing 4 tracks straight away up to Cheshunt. It would transform the suburban timetable. Unlike everyone else, I like the name!
So is there going to be a period of time just before Meridian Station opens where they close the line to knock down Angel Road or will the platforms/station remain and just driven straight through? Also hopefully these sort of upgrades will increase Cheshunt to Stratford routes and less Cheshunt to Liverpool Street- really makes a different in price going to see friends in Hertford when I can't get there via Stratford and end up gong via Liverpool Street or returning via Liverpool Street...
lovely to hear 200 yards mentioned within, Geoff, when describing the distance between Angel Road and Meridian Water. :o) BTW gather we have a mutual friend Kevin Borras.
Thanks for the vid - great to see that the engineers are future-proofing the line for further development as well. Nothing more frustrating than seeing works that address the short term improvements, but soon need replacing themselves.
The A1055 road just north of Angel Road station is already called Meridian Way, so most likely that lent its name to the development of Meridian Water.
Matthew Trzcinski Hi ✋, many of us (with aspirations but commuting to work) are still here and have been developing ourselves quietly waiting for some sort of improvements to our area hoping we can work locally :-)
The still have to build all those homes and jobs. Will the homes be finished before or after the station opens? If its before then Angel road will get busy before its closed. If its after then the new station will stand empty till there are people that live there . Unless of course there is some kind of incredible timing
The Victoria Line was supposed to be extended from the depot to Northumberland Park, Angel Road and the off to Edmonton Green but local residents petitioned against it so that idea is suspended
Someone said, 'if you build new stations. They will come' (something on the lines of that) Very interesting and great video, didn't knew about the 3rd track being installed but I think on how busy that line can be should had been 4 track line
Star. Stratford angel road. The line is already there. They are just reinstating it. Lea bridge road re installation is blocking the old line. Closed 1984 by British rail. Opened by Waltham forest Council in 2016. It's blocking the line and has serious implications for meridian water, Stratford and Walthamstow curve.
I both like and dislike the idea of building the station building over the rails. It can save spaces and create more rooms for development of nearby area, and I think it is a brilliant idea. However, I'm not sure if the passengers would like to walk up to the station to touch in or buy tickets, and then walk down again to board the trains. Maybe I'm a little bit lazy person.
Pongsathon Boonrod is that not why escalators exist? And if there's anything more than 2 tracks you're going to have to either go under the tracks with a tunnel or over them with a bridge to get to your platform.
@9:50 it Still is a thing. One of the Overground lines going up North use it. I think its one a day or week from Enfield Town goes to Stratford via those two curves. Grab a timetable and it will say.
When you posted Angel Road least used I posited if they built a bridge they could get customers to the store and the IKEA. I didnt know about this development, which looks like a great idea.
Geoff, I can't believe you've been to Angel Road twice and not walked the old track bed, now public footpath, that used to divert from just to the north of Angel Road to the original Edmonton Green station, and the reason why the current station is on a curve.
There was one train each evening on weekdays that left Stratford station, that used the curve to Cheshunt. and one in the morning to Stratford. But I don't think it goes any more, since the half hourly service from Stratford was started. I used the one evening train once, just to see what the route was like.
7:04 yes! i completley agree! My hometown of Leigh had 6 stations at one point yet now we have none :( But there are plans for one to be added on the existing Liverpool to Manchester line that passes to the south of the town though so that could be good :) There are two possible locations for it, both on the site of former stations. one at Kenyon Junction and the other at Glazebury. These will both still be over 2 miles away from the town centre but atleast its a start! and road traffic is getting an increasing problem so the new station cant come soon enough!
They should invite you back to the opening and let you cut the ribbon, unviel the plaque, or smash the bottle of champagne onto the track or whatever they do to christen a new station.
Meridian Water? where did that come from? we need a better name such as, Edmonton IKEA, Upper Edmonton, Angel road (lol), Edmonton Road, Angel Edmonton, Glover Drive, Edmonton Tesco, Edmonton North Circular (probably a bit weird), Leeside, Glover Drive Shops, Edmonton, Garman Road, Watermead Way (probably not because Northum. Pk and Tottenham H could have it, in some way) or maybe **the_station_with-no_name**. don't use meridian water, where did THAT come from (again)?
Nice to hear the Enfield councillor talk about aspirations for the folks living in the area - all too often regeneration comes with gentrification, and the locals who stand to benefit from such nice improvements to where they live instead get priced out altogether and it becomes another page in a property portfolio. Maybe its the fact I look at all the 'luxury apartments' at Battersea Power Station when I come into London and know most of it wont even be lived in, but its something that irks me - so Im glad that Enfield council seem to be doing right by their people with this project. Railways absolutely do have a massive community benefit.
LOL, he basically said nothing of that kind, especially he didn't say it won't lead to gentrification (they have no say over who these flats will go to). What he said is a typical council spiel, we want to regenerate and make people's lives better, but what people and who will buy them is not their problem, unless they built these homes they have no say. Asian investors love buying properties close to railways, especially new railway stations, so unless Asian economy crashes expect this to be another Battersea Power Station kind of development.
The Hall Farm Curve was the (now removed) spur which connected the Chingford line with the line to Stratford via Lea Bridge, a little further south from where you were. The curves used by the one-train-a-week (not day!) service are known as the South Tottenham curves, and are indeed where you were. The train runs at about 0530 on a Saturday morning, but has not been running during the electrification work on the Goblin, as the power is switched off at South Tottenham
Wait. So they're building a third rail right where there used to be two. How come the other tracks were ripped up and only 20-30 years later we replace one of them, in turn paying for a stretch of track once. Strange really. To me at least. But then again, if there is space for it without inconveniencing anyone, may as well do it. Better than starting entirely from scratch.
probably because the cost of maintaining it for 30 years was more than the cost of removing it and re-instating it at some indefinite time in the future which might have never come.
You say Meridian Water will be the 2566th station. Wouldn't the crossrail stations, which partially opens in December 2018, count as new national rail stations?
CytherTime no, as they aren’t replacing them. Liv st XRail will still be Liv St NR. However Meridian Water will replace angel road so isn’t classed as a new station
The Greenwich Meridian is 12,000 miles long. But in fact Meridian Water is about a mile west of the Greenwich meridian. The Chingford Line follows it quite closely between Walthamstow and Chingford.
Eesh. Does feel a little awkward when he says it will change the demographics of the people living around it... when I live within walking distance of this new station. *sigh*
