Seems to be an effective package, well suited for it´s job, high survivability of crew is good, you can replace or repair a vehicle but trained crew are not expendable
when I visited Yad La Shiryon , I got to climb on some of the Merkava models , and boy, are they well built !! Also on display , is the NaMer APC , modelled on the Merkava tank ( replacing the obsolete Centurion based APC's )
@@amenboughanmi5819 well mr scientist that is why anti tank missiles are for. Abrams, T 90s nobody is invincible xD Its like saying, the soldier got hit by a bullet even after wearing a kevlar, which happens everytime in real life.
Fun fact, this tank model is like Matrix film was back in the day, so groundbreaking that the technological advancements made on the design and the systems, are used today in many different military fields
The later Merkava MK IV. Variants have 2 Turret hatches. Because they found out it's a threat for the loader, so they added an additional hatch for the loader.
@@TheKenji2221 DON'T FORGET , the Merkava also has room for a squad of infantrymen as well as the tank crew , so there is an additional " escape " hatch at the back for tank crew men/women to use , something that the Sherman DIDN'T have
Compromises that come to mind: - It's as heavy as your mom. - It's not as fast and mobile as its Western equivalents. - Low ammo capacity. However, the latter is mitigated by the ease of resupply provided by the clamshell door.
@@dovidell you can fit a small squad at the back, but it would be cramped as hell. The back door is for reloading the tank with fresh ammo, you can’t fit many rounds into the tank with an infantry squad inside and such action should only be done in emergencies.
I don't know about being the best, but I think the Merkava is certainly one of the best looking modern MBTs, if not the best. It's a toss up between the Merkava and Challenger 2 for me. :)
Nice video dude. It's really good than other channel that trying to explain Merkava but with wrong Merkava version footage video. You put the video in it's good order, like which one is Merkava Mk.1, which one is Merkava Mk.2, Mk.3, Mk.4 and Mk.4M. and it's even good you mention Mk.3D in right order when you explaining where is Mk.4 turret armor from. You good too to know which one is Mk.1 and Mk.2 since some people that not actually know with this tank always confuse which one is Mk.1 and Mk.2
Merkava 4m is the only Fifth Generation tank in the world with protection in TOP against missile-like Javelin so it's the BEST tank in the World with proven Trophy active protected only Engine and transmission come from outside its 25% Tank vas check in USA un Snow in Water in all conditions you can think. Have an air conditioner! No problem with the Engine in front because having a very satistificated computer system newest in the World with new IMI 253 120MM Canon with great vertical and horizontal turret angle - much better when any tank - can move forward with current only visible and computer to fire - in USSR tanks turret in middle and very long so horizontal angle good only on a flat surface - also The IDF was to begin trials of Elbit's Iron Vision, the world's first helmet-mounted display for tanks, in mid-2017. Israel's Elbit, which developed the helmet-mounted display system for the F-35, plans Iron Vision to use a circular review system as a number of externally mounted cameras to project the 360° view of a tank's surroundings onto the helmet-mounted display of its crew members. This allows the crew members to see outside the tank while staying inside, without having to open the hatches. Yes, it's coming from F35 it's our Israeli system!
I'm sorry but it is far from the best mbt, although I do not doubt its technology the tank itself is extremely flawed in many aspects, first we'll talk about the engine, it is mounted in the front which has more cons than pros, the front mounted engine means that when the tank is facing the enemy it gives off a much higher thermal signature, not mention that is also disrupts the thermal sight for the gunner, some argue it is a useful form of protection which many would disagree mainly because the front of the Hull is only 100mm thich meaning that it could literally be immobilised from the front by even late ww2 tanks if they hit and im not even going to mention the more modern apfsds it will likely face which would still just go straight through the engine anyway killing both the crew and rendering the tank inoperable, also another problem in terms of protection is the turret, the angling makes it extremely succeptable to shot traps instantly knocking out the tank, by modern standards it is extremely lacking design, I would hardly call it a fifth generation tank, the best mbt would either be the leopard 2a7, m1a2 sep v3 or the upcoming challenger 3
@@callumrawlinson9005 Nonsense, engine doesn't disrupt thermal sights, front of the hull is way more than 100mm thick and it has internal ERA. Merkava is better than any of the tanks you've mentioned.
@@BenyKarachun🤣🤣🤣 you must be joking, the merkava is just a bad tank, the only thing it has going for it is an aps but most nato tanks are planned to have them so the merkavas only strong point won't even matter, it has a bad engine, mediocre gun at best, some of the worst armour ive seen for a modern mbt, it has a front mounted engine that acts as "extra protection" but at the same time has unreliable fire protection systems so once that engine gets hit, which it will, the tank is done for, I'm sorry your favourite tank is nowhere near as good as most other nato tanks but that's just facts, list me the reasons why the merkava is better than the challenger 2, leopard 2a7 and m1a2 sep v4, ill wait.
The Merkava is admirably adapted to the battlefield on which it operates. However, I'd say the title of "World's Best Contemporary MBT" belongs to the Leopard, whose evolution continues to increase its capabilities to a high degree. It is likely to be the first Western tank to feature a 140mm gun.
@Ian That is beneficial to a nation like Israel but for a specialized MBT, I would still argue the Leopard is the better MBT. A versatile chassis though is an amazing thing.
@@stuco81 Oh yeah? How? Proven by some guys shooting 1970's PG-7V rockets towards it? Lmao. Leopards got fucked in combat same as any other tank and without Trophy Merkava has his ass kicked by Arabs with rockets.
The mark IV successor is being considered as an option for the, Italian Army in competition with the Franco/German design as the Ariete C1 will be phased out. The C2 will be a mild life upgrade but is just a refurbished C1 I fear the Merkava will be too heavy for the Italian infrastructures tho...
With Isreals introduction of the Eitan 8x8 wheeled IFV they might be going for a lighter mobile tank this time. Especially with trophy system active protection.
I know a LOT about tanks, Especially modern ones. The Merkava in configuration was/is 30 years ahead. The whole purpose of the tank is mobile firepower under protection. Under REAL WORLD battle conditions, the Mervava will survive and also remain in the field. It's irrelevant the M1 etc are 15 Mph faster, they just rush faster into defeat.
Too nice video of excellent weapons detective channel...thanks for sending.video .introduced nicely. With clear explaining of Markova mark IV history background and its specific characteristic and its power ranges which reflects Israel request for its defence system..
I dont like the term "best tank" - maybe is is the best tank for Isreali use. For german high mobil tactics the Leopatd 2A7V is the best and for the more defence british tactics the Challenger 2 or the new C3 wil lbe the best. It allways depends on how i want to use it.
Britain didn't oppose any security, they just wanted to sell tanks to Arabs instead of Jews (more market) they sold to only Arabs and never managed to sell to any western buyer. 707 Chieftain Tanks to Iran, 274 Chieftain Tanks to Jordan, 80 Chieftain Tanks to Iraq, 28 Chieftain Tanks to Oman, 175 Chieftain Tanks to Kuwait. 200 Chieftain Tanks Qadafi's Libya,
@@mick96ful If this was correct, would they be selling Oil to the US since 1967, the main supplier of imported weapons to Israel, would they buy mostly from the US weapons?. Never mind, it was a blessing in disguise
I can't believe you say it, so first Israel was the first country to develop the trophy system not the US or Russia secondly the merkava 5 is equipped with it and the US later purchased it besides not even to this day not all Abrahams are equipped with it if you don't believe me check it for yourself
I agree and... Acording to articles on wiki in 2016 Israel ordered another 100 Trophy systems to equip almost all of their Merkava IVs and IFVs. I think we can assume that today (2022) ALL of their tanks and IFVs have it, such a powerful force. You can already hear the cry of the RPG boys that can't do shit
Your description of the deal between the UK and Israel on the Chieftan is lacking. What happened was: The British sought to benefit from Israeli battlefield experience for the development of their next tank. The project was initiated with the Israelis being required to buy large quantities of obsolete Centurion tanks, and provide their engineering analyses and some of their technology, in return for the supply of the production line Chieftans. The Israelis abided by their part, they provided the R&D and engineering studies as well as how these married up to the tactical implementation of the armour. They bought hundreds of hundreds of obsolete Centurions, which they intended to upgrade as a stop gap measure until the Chieftans arrived, mainly to replace Shermans and Super-Shermans. Once the British secured their objectives from the relationship, they annulled the deal, leaving Israel without a new tank. This resulted in two things, (a) The lineage of the Merkava MBT's and (b) Israel refusing to enter a R&D -> Production project with Britain for a weapons system ever again.
It shows how far Isreal has come since the 70s to design, build an finaly use this incredible bit of kit. UK who started tanks during the first WORLD War has been developing since then.🙏🙏👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
It's a fun fact that the British were angry in the early 1960s that Israel took the trial tank For a trip near the border The Israeli answer was do not worry we moved the border
the Indian Army could do with a fleet of 1,630 - 1,950 brand new Merkava IV+ MBT with the Trophy hard kill countermeasure system . . . it'll replace the older T-90 & T-60s . . . in Indian Army service the Merkava IV would have a strengthened raised suspension setup featuring a heavy duty 5.0 in. suspension lift for increased ground clearance . . . it'd also need enhanced engine cooling, for sustained use in + 42.0° deg & 100% humidity . . . IDF needs more newer Merkava IV+ MBTs that will replace the Merkava III variants . . .
it is a Very BIG tank and does its job exceptionally well. could not function in most of Japan, though. tank is built with objectives in mind and it fits them well!!!
Actually it would work well for JSDF's purposes. The Merkava is very much a defensive tank. Japan's Type 90 is built around a lot of the same principles at the Leopard series which is an open country maneuver warfare tank, not likely the type of combat that Japanese tanks are likely to see. The Merkava is well suited to going hull-down in a prepared position and holding around. Japanese terrain is very mountainous, an attacking armor force would have very few options of advance allowing the defender to stack tanks in defensive positions. Merkava's heavy weight and short range would not be such a downside in those scenarios.
"one of the best tank in the world" hahaha this make me fart.. this tank actually can't even climb at 50° slope on real ground surface with sand and small rock. I told this because we pulled this tank 2 times stuck cant move forward. i think maybe it's too heavy on the front hull or maybe not enough power on the engine or maybe any other factors that idk about. tbh, this tank very good looking tank in real life and very safe in my opinion but not the best in the world.
I got 2 remarks on this video: 1. Tge capital of Israel is Jerusalem, not Tel Aviv (as compared to London). 2. Only one allied state of Israel got 12 Mk.4 Merkava tanks as it's army uses a lot of Israeli military hardware 😎
Lmao... No, they dont agree its the best in the world. It is far from best in the world. I mean ..How Merkava have low thermal signature when the engine and exhaust is literaelly in the damn front where it is facing enemy thermal sights? xaxa... Besides that engine does not provide any protection from KE rounds at all. And even RPG could damage it or transmission to mobility kill Merkava. Also, if multiple RPG is fired on him, it will overwhelm trophy system. Low plate of Merkava have no composite armor at all by the way. xD
Well when you live in a place where hiding an IR signature is a joke, it makes sense to put an engine at the front. When you're all sand and rock, weight is not a consideration. It's a good tank, for Israeli use
Very good, enjoyable mini-doc, about a decent subject matter. I Reckon the Challenger 2 is still the best most suitable Tank on earth, and when the Challenger 3 is commissioned it'll be even better and way above anything out there on today's market, remember only the Challenger 1 and 2 have never been destroyed by Enemy fire, it's the Only fully battle tested tank, tested to breaking point, And then it still didn't break, it's reliability is legendary, longest Tank on Tank Kill, one took around 25 RPG-7S and another around 40, the CH-2 that took around 25-30 RPGs, also took continuous small arms fire, an anti Tank rocket, it was recovered all crew safe and in tact, fixed and back out within 6hrs, in fact both thanks continued to function as usual, an amazing tank. The Merkava MK4 has one amazing feature, it ms also a troop carrier, with the engine at the front performing ballistic protection from almost everything, but also means it can be disabled quite easily especially by something like Challenger and Abrams, T-14 Armata, Leopard 2A, but not things like T80/90 etc..etc... Enjoyed the video mate.
Merkava is not only a tank it is apc at same time-Considering tanks should never operate without troops it is a big deal-Guns elevation rate is impressive-Turret angles are good against top attack as well-Getting in and out of the tank at back is better than using hatches open to enemy fire-Forward engine is extra protection-At Turkey this tank was one of the candidates-Israel has modernized old Turkish tanks to SABRA-We are happy with their protection-Gun elevation is critical for mountainous terrain like Turkey-We could have evolved this tank to Turkish needs -This tank would be much more affordable at mass production by Turkish defense industries-
It's not an antenna, but a "stick on a spring", used to indicate to the driver where the tank ends. useful with driving in narrow areas. Hope they fixed the issue where it brakes when getting hit by the gun at high speed
But it's not the best mbt, brilliant tank, especially for survival of crew, but it isn't the general consensus its the best mbt, when you had centurian In the 50s, 60s and 70s with all its upgrades then yes, agreed, but not now, I don't think there's a best, imo they're all beasts but it's down to the crew.
How ironic that a nation the UK 🇬🇧 opposed to a proactive aggressive defence policy of Israel 🇮🇱 seeing that the UK 🇬🇧 colonised most of the known world at the point of a bayonet 😂
3:54 you can see a Centurion without a Turret on the right. this is called puma, used for combat engineering units, still in use today but have some changes likes engines and so
Great Video on a great tank. Though my own opinion is its not the Greatest tank in the world I will say this its the best tank for Israel and if it had a 120mm L55 gun not its L44 I would then consider it being the greatest. With the Trophy system it has done very well back in 2014s protective edge and with the recent conflict with the occupants in the Gaza strip whom are throwing missiles at Israel and the other dicks in Lebanon whom with the big but small dicks in Iran whom are arming them, I feel the Merkava tanks will be embroiled in another conflict and will prove itself once again. For me one of the Greatest tanks in the world today with its knew upgrade being announced is the British Challenger 2 now with the knew upgrade being called Challenger 3 is the best tank in the world when it comes to protecting its crew. With the older Challenger 1 still in service Challenger 2 there combat record is proof of that(Longest direct tank on tank kill no crewman killed in conflict). The Merkava is designed from British tanks at first a combo of the Centurion and Chieftain tanks but like you said is unique and is why I think it is such an awesome tank. (Just a note for those whom don't know Challenger 2 only has 5% of common parts with its older brother Challenger 1 tank and is different tank.) Maybe you should do some vids on some of the British tanks after the Centurion for your viewers for knowledge. And would like to add because of its need to survive Israel even with captured equipment had done the best in upgrading it and using it to defend against an enemy whom should give up and use peace not war.
We Love brother ISRAEL Respect from: PHILIPPINES MERKAVA ARE THE NEXT ACQUIZATION OF THE ARM FORCES OF THE PHILIPPINES HORIZON 3 AFP MODERNIZATION PROGRAM SHALOM ISRAEL/ FILIPINAS SON OF GOD!!!
Like Shubi said, different units will have the "V" facing different directions or have other decals added to them. They are also visible under IR imagers for easier ID at night.
"Many western and Eastern experts agree that the merkava mk 4 is the best main battle tank today" what a tragic opening line, don't sound like experts to me, although there is no real way to test which is the "best" I believe the top 3 contenders would be the leopard 2a7, m1a2 sepv 3 and the upcoming challenger 3
the leopards showed their lack of usefulness when turkey put them into syria. there are still videos out there on how kurdish RPG type AT rip through them with ease at a large distance. as for the m1.its main issue was and is the gas turbine engine which simply cant handle desert dusty conditions for long. challenger 3 will probably be a very good tank. but its not even battle ready. the russian armata is the only real current would be contender so far. but .. again. until it is battle tested we cant really know.
When that tap of free money turns off, good luck. Learn to earn and build a better economy if you have a spine instead of relying on others to foot your bill
@@ConstantineJoseph - Israel's GDP is approaching $400 billion, and therefore they can certainly afford to maintain and ultimately develop their own economy. Moreover, most of the money that Israel receives from the U.S. is returned to the U.S. in the form of arms purchases, and that in itself helps to keep many Americans employed in the defense industry. Additionally, by financially assisting Israel with money to purchase American made weapons, the Pentagon gets an opportunity to see how well their weapons perform in an actual combat scenario before American troops ever have to use those same weapons in an actual combat scenario. As well, Israel often makes many improvements to the American made weapons that are sold to Israel, and that ineluctably saves the U.S. government billions of dollars in research and development. The U.S. also continues to maintain its influence over Israel -- and ultimately much of the Middle East -- by providing financial aid to Israel. Thus, it is a win/win situation for the U.S. to financially assist Israel. Learn some facts before posting any more ignorant comments on RU-vid.

Not only airlift. But also to transport by rail. They are wider and bigger. Most tank sizes were defined because they must be transported by rail or airlift. This limits tanks engineers in almost every country. Merkava is transported by Big Trucks in roads, you can cross entire Israel in less then a day by truck and get anywhere. So no need for Airlift and Rails. Those tanks can be transported in matter of hours to any front should war to occur. In case of tiny israel, to mount tank on rail or airlift would be waste of time, because this would take days.
@@TheStallker2003 even before Merkava Israel had a transporter for ever Tank. They also have a network of military roads which in the old days were not on public maps. I remember being in the Negev and they told my mom about a short cut on one of the unmarked military roads. It was paraded wide with only the center paved. When we encountered other cars we would each put a wheels in the dirt. Then came a convoy of tanks on transporters. They stayed on the pavement forcing us to stop on the shoulder. The use of transporters meant redeployment was faster and wear and tear on tanks was reduced.
@@TheKeithvidz And weirdly both Andrew and the vid are correct. The Merkava is primarily a defensive tank. This means it's weight and limited range are less of a problem than an attacker who can expect to be further from repair/resupply. The Merkava will only be expected to make short bounds from one defensive position to another or limited range attacks/counter-attacks. It isn't exactly expected to drive to Tehran on one tank of fuel. Like the video said, the IDF no longer has plans to drive all the way to Damascus, so who cares if it's max range is short?

To start, who would WANT to drive on Damascus these days? The Syrians are doing a good enough job fucking it up on their own, they don't need the Israeli's help with that. Second, at what point did I say "fight a war on a single gas tank"? What I said was, "they are closer to resupply so limited range is not a major concern". Your desire to twist my words to suit your own means does NOT in fact make you correct. Lastly, I would not characterize myself as pompous. I would instead say "educated in the methodology of waging war", something you clearly are not given your WILD misunderstanding of tank classification and design requirements. The next generation Leopard, or it’s replacement designation will be the best MBT. German armour dating back to the King Tigers of WWII, literally destroyed all rivals. Few other countries save Russia and the US possess this historical tank design and manufacturing knowledge. Bottom line - difficult to best German armour.
