The non-verbal communication says it all. Asked about what they told Italy's Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi at Sunday's euro crisis talks in Brussels, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy respond with smiles and then go on to say that their call on Italy to present further reforms before Wednesday's second euro summit.

After being severely admonished by French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel at a summit on Sunday, Berlusconi issued a statement saying that nobody in the EU had the right to nominate himself commissioner and teach lessons to other governments.
Berlusconi also hit back at France and Germany, hinting that the real cause of the euro crisis wasn't Italian overspending, but the greed of their banks.
"In what refers to the turbulences of sovereign debt and the bank crisis, in particular the French-German one, we have firm positions which we will outline at the next EU Council," Berlusconi said.

@GetitUnderCool well, my explanation is that there is a big structural crisis in the world economy, which have been based on financial values instead that on real economic values. What economic values are is a broad subject of study: they include environment and society It is the crisis of the classical state model: states have to reduce their weight and society has to take a leading role in the devolopping of democracy, instead of waiting for parties to do anything

@Stef1v Point is: Berlusconi did not make the impression of being very... capable, judging from the media coverage he got, outside of italy at least. You should also take into account how far the remarks of the ppl go that seem to feel personally offended by the non verbal communication between Merkel and Sarkozy in the clip. To react that way, i assumed they had to hold great sympathies for Berlusconi and thus were most likely amongst the italians that voted for him.

@lotorobly what you have said is true, but i fear that the changes you are talking about will take some time to happen, in the meantime are required some "emergency reforms". i know the problem is vast, and i must admit that the situation is not completeley clear to me. i participated to manifestation in rome last 15 october, and seeing how the media, after focusing so much on the clashes and disorders, have ignored motivations of the protest, well i'm running out of hope.

In a normal situation in Italy, with a government formed by more than 4 parties facing a 100% obtrusive opposition, they can barely pass any a reform. This crisis has forced Italy to finally pass the reforms that should have been passed 10-15 years ago. And the two enemy big parties (PD and PDL are enemies, not rivals) now support the same agenda, even if it was against their electoral program.

I cannot believe to my eyes, my country who tollerate such a lack of respect, such intrusion into his policy and that because we have renounce to our fiscal autonomy (Maastricht treaty) and our own currency. Italy has serious issues (as other countries as well) but we have never had 20 years of economical stagnation, and this is happening since we have adopted the Euro.

@GetitUnderCool the situation in Italy is not so different from the one of the other western countries by now, and the situation there depends on the paralisys of the state, which seems not able to reform itself as it should Economy should direct to new areas of investment, but what it is needed is big change in the whole perspective, in the society itself more than in parties or politicians. So to me it's time to stop blaming politicians and start blaming our daily behaviours and choices

@GetitUnderCool History showed it many times, but I believe each country has it's specificities. For example, I'm rather optimistic for Tunisia than for Libya or Egypt. However the islamic party won the elections last sunday, I don't think the Tunisian people will accept a "talibanisation" of their society. The libyan society seems pretty much disorganized, and the poverty of so many Egyptians makes the come of democracy hypothetical for a while...

good to know man, concidering Merkel, we have elections in six months, so the tone of german ruling Party is very hard one, ist directed towards german conservatives. But after elections, who ever wins will have to make compromises with other countries who are currently in financial Troubles anyway. Please, take that into account if you hear anything from Germans pointed at your Country at the Moment.

Indipendentemente dal giudizio positivo o negativo su Berlusconi,non avevano diritto di sfanculare in diretta mondiale un uomo democraticamente eletto e nell'esercizio dei suoi pieni poteri. Sarkozy ha già fatto la fine che merita,mentre la Merkel verrà giudicata per come ha gestito la crisi dell'euro e per l'affidabilità tedesca Volkswagen. Complimenti!!

@@Preussensprinz probabile. Ricorda comunque che autosantificarsi é un reato talmente grave che é quasi impossible parlarne. La Merkel é una politica come Kennedy o Saddam Hussein. La differenza la crea il popolo capisci? Per quello che capisco che é la Merkel, che forzatamente solo ti ripeto che il problema era autosantificarsi. Adesso la Merkell che c'entra? @itachiitachi1946 The Enlargement of the European Union was a political driven DECISION against better rational judgement, thats a fact. Everybody (including the greece government of course) thought that the different social realities in the euro countries would just align to each other over time, well that didnt happen. so what do we do now? yes usa/china never liked the euro/EU because we are rivals of course. but nowadays you could get the feeling we europeans are the biggest rivals to e.o.

@GetitUnderCool well the situation here is not that different u know, it's just more natural... U r right people r not very aware of the risks we have in front of us, and politicians can't do much. U know why? because we live in democracies and fortunately enough that means citizens are free and government cant change the life of people! Just the people, everybody, can change, toghether. The real solution comes from getting toghether at all levels, in the world, for common interests and goals

@choefrogg the problem is not only berlusconi, he bought the votes that sustained him in the parliament, just just like he did last december, the real problems are politicians who sell their votes! in italy there isn't much choice at the moment, the opposition is the lesser evil, but they're among those "vote sellers". anyway, berlusconi did'nt win with an overwhelming majority, his coalition has 344 seats in the chamber of deputies and 174 in the senate,

@WeriTR The multiple strikes by unions and private lobbies against Monti reforms (pensions, deregulation, simplification) are showing how hard is to reform Italy. Extremely hard, actually. One powerful (communist) union called today for a general strike in March against a labor reform that the government has NOT even launched yet. When Berlusconi tried a deep labor reform 10 years ago, a gigantic strike and millions protesting in street stopped him.

@itachiitachi1946 i personally dont hate greece, i respect it a lot and its historical culture. but we should also not forget that there are a lot of problems within greece itself. a lot of things that dont fit in our time, at least not in conjunction with a common currency. on the other hand ppl should not start hating germany because it tries to solve all those problems, what are we expected to do? if we try to lead out of this misery we are "fourth reich" etc, if we dont do anything its wrong
